I assume by encryption you mean PGP, which isn't required for most sellers, but it is for some. I've never used it personally.

Incase bitinstant decides to cliff dive again Don't know why they just didn't put their old site back up.
Old news, but anyone worried about how the feds busted a bunch of tor sites?

No. Silkroad is not hosted on Freedom Hosting. The main thing is to update tor, and disable javascript in case you visited tormail while it was compromised. If you send unencrypted, incriminating messages through tormail ever before, you should maybe be worried just a little bit.
Silkroad also put in many updates just recently, like rating system overhaul and now you can discuss vendors, products, and categories publicly through the SR main site. No more checking forums to see if somebody is legit!

What would be the easiest site to purchase bitcoins in America using the moneygram process? Something similar to how bitinstant used to do it.

go to walmart, buy visa money card, boom instant credit card.

you can even use a fake identity, and when they ask for social security number or drivers license number, just say you don't need the permanent card
Send in a money order to campbx. The cost of shipping will be just a couple dollars more than a visa gift card but that cost will be made up with the price exchange rate from campbx to silkroad. Assuming the difference will still be a good 5 dollars. Ship flat rate priority (2-3 day) or express (typically 1 day to most US locations) and they both include tracking. Once they process your money order you will have credit on your campbx account. I haven't used this service personally, but it seems like the best bet IMO.
Edit:
You can also use localbitcoins to find somebody who has cash deposit through a bank near you. Many bitcoiners allow you to deposit cash into a bank of america or wells fargo. This can be a convenient option if you have a branch near you, but you will be paying usually 5% above the last gox price (This would amount to several dollars more per bitcoin). Keep in mind that Gox price is already few dollars above SR exchange rate. Thus, your bitcoins will be worth many dollars less (once u transferred the coins to SR) than what you paid, and the loss on exchanging currency can potentially be huge with larger transactions.
Buying bitcoins doesn't have to be a hassle, but you should know the different options you have available when buying bitcoins, as well as the pros/cons. I'm a couple days away from being level 2 verified on coinbase, which means I can buy up to 50BTC at any time I want using my bank accounts instantly. Level 1 Verification on coinbase allows you to buy bitcoins, but you must wait 4 business days before having the BTC.
localbitcoins.com
uses escrow system and is hella fast.
I deposited money into wells fargo anonymously to someone and they transferred to my localbitcoins wallet.
5/5 def recommended

I mean there's some that use moneygram or whatever if that's what you're looking for

I'm vouching for campbx, I've put several post office money orders to them and so far its gone out well. Their exchange rate is lower than like everywhere else, so its like you have 5% more to spend on atlantis for example, not sure how it compares to SR, but you do better than other exchanges.
is there a specific bitcoin wallet that would be very secure/ anonymous specifically for buying things on something like the silk road? are all bitcoin wallets about as equally secure/ secure enough for that kind of activity? I am relatively new to bitcoins/bitcoinwallets
I switched from using blockchain.info to electrum standalone client. i feel my coins are much safer using electrum.

Yeah, and when the bitcoins actually came through the price went down so I was 2 dollars short on my order.
