Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor Pre-Alpha Walkthrough

I know people have said it before but this game would benefit from a more witcher style combat. The whole heavy handed and sort of desperate feeling in witcher makes me think slaying orcs way more than the dancy fighting of assassin's creed.
i dont think it's beating around the bush at all. they're almost exactly the same. i mean obviously i can say you're not seeing it and you can say i'm seeing what i want to see, but that's just our opinions i guess
loads of ways? the movement animations in assassins creed are deliberately stylised. they were designed to create a character who moves in a really cool, unique, and interesting way. it's an integral part of the IP. there's a reason you can spot an assassin's creed game from a mile away and why the assassin characters are so iconic. i could show you any model from any game running through the assassins creed animations and you'd know exactly where they're from instantly. why the hell would you clone that 1:1 for a lord of the rings game? oh yeh cos it's a lazy cashgrab
The movement designed for Assassin's Creed was supposed to represent an agile character who knew his way through an urban setting in a quick manner and the character in Shadow of Mordor so happens to be an agile character. So what animations should they be using? Agile ones. The animations could've been based off the ones from AC, but what's wrong with inspirations? Why do we need to think up new animations when AC has the movements refined? Parkour works exactly like it's seen in AC and Shadow of Morder and I'm pretty sure parkour videos are the main source of inspirations for AC and could be very well shared with the devs of Shadows of Mordor.
it's not absurd at all. i've never seen ropes like that in a game. ever. the reason they're in asscreed is because it's the only way they could think to maintain the flow of the movement mechanics. the reason they're in this game is because it has the exact same movement mechanics. i mean of course they could have thought of another arbitrary asset to slot into that position but that would have required too much thought and effort
It's still absurd because you believe since it was originally within AC that any game with ropes that are similar to it are blatant clones. Sure, they can use any asset, but god forbid if they use ropes.
And what's wrong with maintaining flow in the game? Personally, that's a step in the right direction; if a mechanic that worked in a previous game AIDED it, then it's a lot easier to use a formula that worked than wasting time trying to create something original. If it works, it works, don't try to change it. Assassin's Creed isn't the only game in the world, if I made AC and it inspired all these ideas in other games, I would be pretty damn proud.
I'm just happy to get another (hopefully) great Middle Earth game. BFME2 came out too long ago. It really looks like they're putting the M rating to use. AssCreed alienated me when they started making 100 sequels so I'm down for some Wraith-Ranger Mordor City Unchained Origins. There's been tons of derivative games throughout history that are simply fun to play so I'm not going to shake my fist over this one.
I wonder if this is the game Warner Bros CnD MERP over or if they're just assholes.
Yeah, but you need to realize that it's a game and not a movie.
Doesn't matter - when it comes to immersion breaking stuff it simply needs to go.
LOTR isn't even a hardcore realistic film combat-wise, it's just hilarious how far we've gone from the KISS principle.
I think it looks awesome, but I haven't played assassin's creed before so maybe that's why.
I'm a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and honestly this just doesn't really feel like a Lord of the Rings game. That and I got bored of the Assassin's Creed games after a while, not sure how much I'll like this.
I wanted to say exactly the same thing myself. It does not appear to feel like a LOTR game whatsoever. In theory a game set in that universe should be a lot more like Splinter Cell and Thief than pile of corpses in the center of the main street creed.
A LOTR game needs to have an immense amount of weigh to it.
Eh. I'll still play it.
The way he moves, behaves and acts is totally just pissing on what Tolkien envisioned of Middle Earth. His setting was a low magic based early Dark Ages, he certainly didn't want professional half ring wraith acrobats mind controlling Orcs.
the gameplay we've seen is:
walking/sneaking animations that are almost exactly the same as asscreed (that are so noticeable because asscreed's player animations are really stylised and exaggerated)
climbing stuff (in exactly the same way climbing is done in asscreed, with almost exactly the same animations, presumably with the same control scheme)
stealth killing a sentry
some ropes that make no architectural sense but look eerily like the exact ropes in asscreed that also make no architectural sense
contextual stealth animation for walking along said ropes that looks exactly like the animation from asscreed for contextual rope walking
a mission to assassinate a warlord/leader-type character
detective vision from batman
combat that was basically invented by asscreed2 that every action game since has ripped off including batman (yeh certain earlier games like some of the spiderman games had a similar system but asscreed2 perfected it)
so yeh if you want to kid yourself that for some reason the final game is going to be somehow completely different from the 8 minutes of gameplay we've seen then okay but that's a bit sad. if you can name a genuine USP from this game that we've seen then i'll be glad to be corrected but let's face it this is a clone game
Actually AC had Eagle vision, but that still reinforces your point because it's still the same thing.
This looks awesome. I hope they don't fuck it up.

And Dishonored has Dark Vision, Hitman has Instinct, Splinter Cell has sonar goggles, Metal Gear has the threat ring. Stealth games, or games with stealth elements, often give you some extra-sensory ability.
Looks like AC2, which IMO was the best of the series. So I'm hyped.
