Oney Plays NO MAN SKY - Really Bad First Experience

My god people are either calling it a Maddof Scheme or the Second Coming of Christ
I think that it looks really cool, and the fact I can find stuff that maybe isn't anywhere in the galaxy and name it is really interesting. I'll probably get it when it's on sale.
This whole attitude of "it's Sony's fault Hello Games is an infallible god who can never make a mistake" is so fucking baffling to me. Why is there so much illogical loyalty to this nobody developer who's barely made a game before? It's not Sony's fault, the problem with the game isn't that it was overhyped, the problem with the game is that the entire idea was bad from the start. It's a game based around exploration, okay, fine, no problem with that. But if your game is based entirely on exploration, the world needs to be interesting to explore, you can't make a universe that's interesting to explore when every single planet is perlin noise with a randomized ground/water texture and atmosphere color applied to it, and then populating it with randomly generated animals and plants. Procedural generation is fine in games where the world doesn't have to be super interesting, for example, Minecraft didn't suffer because it's a game about building things, so the world being completely bland and lifeless is irrelevant.
Hello Games isn't some victim of being pressured into making bad decisions by Sony, they made the game they wanted to make, and the game they wanted to make is bad.
Not really? Like, you're saying it yourself, you're expecting more. You're expecting a space sim. To me it clearly appears that they didn't want a space sim, they just wanted a relatively casual game where the entire point is seeing all the crazy things that the algorithm generated. You may not be the type of player that the game is geared towards if you were expecting combat or multiplayer or anything resembling a 4X game.
That said, the algorithm is not a height map with some textures, it's actually a lot more sophisticated than that and they do deserve some credit for it, because what they've done is truly remarkable at least from the technical end of things. It's lacking polish, of course it will considering the size of the team, but what they accomplished is really something.
Believe me, the game would have been far better received if it was much lower caliber.

I don't want a space sim, I just want interesting places to explore, and ideally no crafting system but that's not make or break. Stalagmites glitched out so you can see the non-uv mapped underside doesn't count as interesting. Seeing the same creature preset you've already seen before with procedurally tweaked statistics doesn't count as interesting.
Episode 2 is out.

This guy is hilarious. This is probably going to be the only way I can bear to watch this game.

Seeing the same common creature sets makes finding the cool looking ones more meaningful. With that said I've got over 20 hours in the game and it's really not as "samey" as you're making it out to be.
wut.
I've seen huge cliffs and mountains, massive overhangs, etc. There has only been a handful of planets I've come across that even have water.
Maybe I'm lucky but the planets have been really varied for me. There are set pieces that are more common than others though, but it makes finding rare ones feel more satisfying. I've got over 17 hours in the game so far and I'm still not burned out.
Okay, good for you. I can only go on what I've seen, which is a whole lot of hills in a variety of colours and a few small caves.
Those were edited in. Oney's editor likes to add shit like that.
I really hope that the best gamers/RockCock64 reviews this game so the sound guy can really go to town.
I love the stock sound effects.
I love the stock sound effects.
Reminds me of the sound editing in The Best Gamers.

i like [sp]the small baby alien being launched into space[/sp]
I didn't follow this game at all and I don't get why they hate it in the video. Is it just universally established that the game is bad or are people really that mad about floating stalactites and sometimes seeing through cave walls if you jetpack into them at a really specific angle?
its kind of funny really. People were losing their minds with anticipation for this game because they want "a game where you explore space" and now they're mad because that's what you do. People don't know what they want.

all i wanted was a game where i explore space and i'm more than satisfied
I think people are more upset that it's a space exploration game where every planet is the same thing with pallete swaps.
Have you played the game? Because this couldn't be more bullshit. The hateboner going on for this game is absolutely absurd.

You should try Elite Dangerous

He asked for a game about exploring space, not grinding the same trade loop for a bigger ship.

All I see are memes
Oh god I've never felt sick from FOV but when he was smacking the ragdolling bug-thing on the ground in the second video I had to look away for a bit. Goddamn what a great FOV!

Whoa there, it looks like you're posting some incredulous misinformation there friendo. Elite has undergone MANY core changes since the space trucker days. Space trucking is still lucrative but there are many other options available that can be just as profitable. Plus trading is literally grinding for nothing but a bigger ship to hold more, which is why it's shit. At least with combat aka what the game is supposed to be, there's variety in ships and weapons and how they handle to let you pick what you want.

Is the AI still murderbot-vicious and near-perfectly capable of staying out of your effective weapons range at all times? Is PowerPlay still mostly pointless?
I bought Elite in the late-fall 2015 Steam sale and I walked away right before 2.1 with over 200 hours because I was just falling asleep at the game and it simply was not fun, not even combat. Then 2.1 came out and the AI were doing things like this:

Having said all that, this isn't the Elite megathread so I'll curtail bitching about ED here. The ED thread also has had two posts in it this month, one of which being a link to patch notes.
Speaking of, I just read those patch notes, and this jumped out at me in the NPC section:
- Removed sub-system targetting
Good to see they fixed the AI from instapopping ships after more than two months. That partially covers the "murderbot" part, at least...but not the part where I'm too bored to launch it.

No point telling him anything as elixwhitetail has 101 reasons why Elite sucks compared to the luxuriating Star Citizen or the vast expanse of No Man's Sky.
I mean, I'm a little underwhelmed with the game, but they seriously spent hours trying to find zinc...without scanning for it once. You literally click in the left stick and it puts markers on important resources that are near you. I was off my starting planet within 30 minutes, you just run around and scan to find the resources.

They obviously didn't know that you could do that, although it's still their fault since they skipped a lot of shit.
[editline]August 14, 2016[/editline]
Nevermind, apparently the Scanner needed to be repaired with 20 Zinc so they couldn't do that until they hit that amount.
Scanner repairs with carbon, which is ridiculously easy to find. Honestly I understand a lot of complaints about this game, but this was some DSP-level shit. How anyone could spend that long mindlessly wandering around and not figure out the scanner is beyond me.
They weren't wandering, they were exploring :v:
Yeah I can't in all honestly recommend Elite Dangerous towards the NMS crowd. Both games have the same design flaw; a ton of "content" with no depth whatsoever. Outside of community goals and the occasional background lore easter egg every loop in Elite is a dull grind until you optimize it. Trading is trading, mining is atrociously tedious, exploration is flying to systems and scanning them, which I guess if you like NMS you will like that. Combat is probably the most well designed aspect and what kept my attention the longest (as in, I never traded, I mined for 30 minutes, and I did exploration for an evening) but eli sets out the problems with it pretty well; 90% of your experience is a lukewarm combination of excellent presentation but dull, repetitive fights with the remaining 10% being instantly popped because a super AI ship targeted you and suddenly your fully upgraded shields are gone. If you are really hard up for a space game and don't mind paying $50 every year, there isn't much else in the genre but speaking as someone who had 150 hours put into it prior to the Steam release, I'm just waiting for Star Citizen.

Smuggling and commodities trading are the most lucrative money makers followed by stacking CZ missions and HazRes sites.
[editline]15th August 2016[/editline]
I'd also question the assertion that the game was made for combat because Elite always trended more towards trading in the trading/exploration/combat trifecta, and in-game it feels like trader "progression" is a lot smoother than combat progression, where you get to the Cobra and have to grind CZ's until you can get the Vulture and do HazRez, as opposed to the trader loop that lets you start with courier missions, then rare trading, then either smuggling or commodities or both.
Because I don't wanna start another thread here's episode 3
