I have a question, What do i need to do to make my car sound louder/powerful, is it the exhaust i need to change?
The exhaust system is the easiest way to modify the engine note, yes.
I would, however, advise against it. Most engine and exhaust combos sounding scratchy like a lawnmower with delusions of grandeur.
If you do, makes sure you do your research onto the exhaust and engine so you don't get one of those godawful systems that sends out a constant BRRRRRRRRRRRR noise through the cabin at highway speeds.
Thanks guys for the response!
I know that an Accord or Civic would be the most ideal cheap car for the trip, but I just can't get over how boring they can be sometimes, however I *really* like the 80's Civics of any variety and the wagons/hatchbacks from the 90's.
I just happened to stumble upon the Merc and remembered some of you guys saying favorable things about it and I kind of want to go diesel if I can, but I think I'll pass on looking at the Merc. (Plus CT is quite a trip!).
Older lexus' interest me too, but I don't know too much about them, anybody have any info or firsthand experience?
It's too bad Mazdas tend to hold their value so well, I'd kill for another 1st Gen Mazda 6, but people tend to ask so much for them.
I was helping my friend work on his Forester and his Baja and those were great and I'd love to have a good Subaru but the local Subaru market isn't the best around here right now.
On the note of the 100mi/day thing - that will be happening for the spring semester (Late Jan - May) once I go back to college full time, this semester (August - December) will only be 200/mi a week on top of my ten mile commute to work.
You gotta get an ls400. The 1uz v8 is a really awesome motor, DOHC and ~270 hp makes for a really cool package in a luxury sedan. Those cars are dead reliable too I consistently see them with other 200,000 miles. Matt Farah owns one with almost 1 million miles on the original engine. Try to get one without traction control and air suspension, they can be expensive to fix.
Old Mercs are always cool but not always the best. The diesels are unique and hard to kill but I saw one lose a drag race with a snail and the snail was asleep.
They're charming but you need to know what you're getting into. Personally I'd prefer one over any FWD Japanese import for comfort and cool factor but that's just my opinion.
subarus are fun to drive but they ate absolutely not fun to work on
When my friend and I were dropping the motor and transmission out of his parts baja it didn't seem too bad, but then again I'm used to the horrifically cramped engine bay in my MR2 :v:

The horrors of a spark plug change

at least on the new FA20 the oil filter is on the top of the engine instead of in the ring of fire
subarus are fun to drive but they ate absolutely not fun to work on
Drive a manual Outback or Forester and get back to me
Is there any kind of performance community for the LS400? I've always wanted one and they're stupid cheap around here.
sort of but they make 300 easy just with a full exhaust system, cold air intake, and a tune
Hey so hopefully this is the thread to ask this in. First time car buyer here. Looking at Ford fusion hybrids. Dealer has an se msrp 29. After incentives it's 23... But just on that one car. Is this a good deal or is something going on here?
What do you want with a hybird car
To save on has since I'm in the bay area

The Fusion Hybrids are nice vehicles. A surprising amount of power with the electric motor and CVT. Cant help you on price. That type of stuff changes regionally. Check with other dealers and see what they're selling at and compare
The other day I made a left out onto a road just like .5 seconds before some kid in a subaru outback made a left onto the road headed the same way as me but like 3 blocks away. So i'm in the super heavy slow as fuck automatic flatbed and I'm accelerating as quickly as it can, which isn't fast at all since it hangs all the gears for ages, and this kid is on my fucking ass veering left and right like he's too fucking dumb to realize something that weighs like 10,000lbs isn't fast.
And then when I'm at the speed limit he's still right up my ass, which I mean i don't give a shit, he can surely stop quicker than me, and if he doesn't he's going to get decapitated by a gigantic steel beam. and I'm trying so hard not to laugh because I'm sure he'll see me in the gigantic mirrors and get all butthurt.
So then the road opens up to 4 lanes and as we're getting to a green light he passes me on the right wide open, while some lady is making a left through the intersection, whom he almost T-bones, and again I try so hard to not laugh. Once he's in front of me I see this like 1foot by 6inch reddit logo sticker but the face is a subaru badge and I fucking LOST IT. I was sitting behind this kid howling with laughter punching the dash in amusement, holy hell.
I'm really considering this 1978 Corolla... but smog.

If anyone has any questions, for some reason, about Hilborn mechanical fuel injection, just ask me! We run it on my neighbor's midget and we were having fuel issues after putting a hot motor in it so now after a couple nights I know that shit inside and out :v:
subarus are fun to drive but they ate absolutely not fun to work on
On the newer ones with an insulated/padded plastic undertray, always take it off. when doing oil changes. I left it on and used brake cleaner to try an clean as best I could. The car did catch fire because the exhaust was right above the oil/brake cleaner soaked padding. but nobody got hurt and that was 3 years ago. Don't take shortcuts!
also spark plugs are really only bad on the Coil On Plug (cop) versions. only because you need the car in the air to do it semi easily

Probably not exactly what you are looking for but I have a 2005 LX470 that has been in my family since it was new, I think it currently has like 230k on the engine, which I believe is a 2UZ.
It's fantastically reliable (being a posh land cruiser). It isn't really a rev happy engine but that's fine because it has enough low end grunt for a ~5600lb car. Newer Lexus' have a girly image to them but I think mostly everything from the mid 2000s and earlier are wonderful cars pending you find one that was taken care of. Also, old people tend to like them so they are rarely abused.

on an unreliable note how awful of a buy is an e36 323i with 130k miles for $2500
Found a few options for the Lexus search.

At this price, I could afford fixing it, provided there isn't anything else wrong :v:

With a carb rebuild, tune-up and a fresh cat there's no reason you can't make it pass. It's an old Toyota, people don't have issues with them passing like say a late 90's Honda. That car is super clean too, if you're looking for a really nice clean economical classic car you can live with that Corolla is literally what you're looking for.

Take the low mile salvage title one, if the body repair was good you'll have some fresher paint and it's a big beefy land barge so if there was any frame damage the car is gonna feel and look like it should have been totaled.
