Should I go for it? It looks so fucking tempting. I am getting my Driver's License in 2 weeks and this SUV for a first ride seems fucking nuts.
For your first car, I would suggest to go to the craigslist equivalent of Panama and look for something under 5k.
have you ever driven a big ass suv before?
Yes. Mitsubishi Montero.
@Duct, it's all econobox shitty compact vehicles. I'm looking for something midsize to large.

That Escalade is like 2 Monteros, find a 80s-90s Mercedes S-Class if you want a large car.

Escalades are Kinda Junk, cheaply built, not meant to last, and not spectacular in any way. The only thing that you are paying for is the Cadillac name.

Well this is being sold for $5,900, worth it?

Terrible idea man. Buy yourself a nice reliable import for your first car. You want something cheap and easy to work on, and cheap to insure. You're picking the most difficult route you can.
You're going to cry the first time you get a bill for parts and or labor on either of those cars. Sure, you'll look cool to the other Juniors in high school... until it breaks down or you smash it into something.

Something like a 90s Honda CR-V? Because that's something that has been on my mind also for a while.

That is a decent choice.
TBH an Escalade is a good truck. Pre 2007 (like that one) they were the exact same as a Tahoe. Solid engine, didn't rust out too bad, easy to work on interior. I see them go well above 200k miles. BUT holy FUCK 18k they're out of their damn mind. Maybe if it has like 20,000miles on it or less.
A Mercedes is a nice car, of course, but be ready for expensive repairs and difficult diagnosis (compared to a Honda or something).
90's CRV is an excellent SUV. And they come with their own damn table. Nice. Rav4 is another good one of the same pedigree.
You're debating buying a Mercedes or a Cadillac for your first vehicle after you (presumably) get your drivers license
WHAT
You need to be looking at more shitty vehicles for you to wreck in. And you will damage your vehicle, dont ever think you wont. Everyone does when they're a new driver.
You are going to feel better damaging a $3000 Tahoe than a $18000 Cadillac.
i didnt damage my first car with my bad driving
[editline]12th November 2015[/editline]
i havent damaged any of my cars by my own means

As long as it isn't an S600, has records, and has had the full timing chain service in the last 30k (invoice included), then yes it's worth it as long as it has springs and dampers. The 140 bodies are a bit of a chore to diagnose though.
If I were you, I'd go a bit older. The 1979-1991 S-Class is a much easier car to live with on a daily basis. Stay away from V8s and V12s in general though, as the V8s, especially old MB V8s can be massively irritating if you aren't careful. If you can find one, I recommend the 1979-1985 280SE-SEL with the M110 twin cam six. Also, avoid automatic climate control like the plague in older MBs, it's expensive to fix.
[t]http://bi.gazeta.pl/im/81/fb/d9/z14285697Q.jpg[/t][t]https://i.gyazo.com/55f7b3eabce43192e78b5b733355b79b.jpg[/t][t]https://i.gyazo.com/888b562ae33ea8fddcf1fd9e574b53b4.jpg[/t][t]https://i.gyazo.com/bce3b2a1279ef01c518a4bd09c76d7c2.jpg[/t]
Autoclimate is the single most expensive thing to fix on an older MB. You can buy a whole engine for cheaper than you can fix this system.
Otherwise they aren't bad for first cars, just don't buy one with a V8. I own an 86 420SEL (V8), and it hasn't broken down on me once and I've spent 1k on repairs in the past 2 years, but I also bought the car for $2k with it's fair share of issues. Work on it yourself, and you could get away with driving whatever you are willing to put up with.
At the end of the day though, buy a car to go with your personality. If you don't mind working on it yourself every now and then in addition to oil changes, then you won't have an issue with a MB or any other German car. If you are going to leave oil changes to a mechanic, buy a Honda. A good place to start with carbuying is to figure out what your must haves are.
For example, here are my must haves:
- comfort
- space
- ease of simple maintenance
- good road manners
- power when needed
- 20 MPG
- ease of tinkering
- ease of driving
- a good firm seat
And that list resulted in me buying an old S-Class, and I don't regret it all. In fact I want to do it again, but try and find a 280SE with a stickshift and manual climate or a coupe (if I want to be a real idiot).:v:
End of rant :eng101:
Or not...

I haven't personally damaged my own car, but my sister did back into it. But the Benz took her Subaru's bumper
I didnt wreck my first car either? Out of all my cars I have a scraped bumper and a broken mirror to show for it all the other damage happened when they were either parked in Vancouver or Seattle and people smashed them with their doors.
Seattle alone netted me 17 hits after 4 days.
My first car managed to get into an accident with no drivers in either car. (Car parked behind me when the roads were icy, slid into me after they got out.)
Luckily the damage was limited to bending up my license plate.

A very expensive Tahoe.
Escalades around here are driven like BMW's/audis/Mercedes but even more assholish.
Took pictures of two Z31s tonight.
They're sexy as hell.

And get ruined a whole lot faster by stupid owners...
Just got a large chunk of change, looking around for a car for family purposes. I swore there was so much on CL when I was broke, now there aint shit.
I want to also purchase a utility truck, but that will be from an auction. I'm eyeballing a cummins powered 2001 Dodge, with a diamond utility bed and an equipment crane. But auction's not till the 18th...

Isn't that what all the various 80's/90's Mercedes and BMW beaters piddling about are?
I just had my W123 rust-protected with that oily stuff - I totally forgot how much this shit smells for the first week or so. Also getting it up to temperature the first time after the oily undercoat was fun as it was all over the exhaust. So much smoke emitted from the car because of it burning, so when I stopped at the gas station on the way home, a guy was like "dude your car is on fire."
Anyway, for some reason, they fixed my clutch shaking issues after I replaced the clutch. I don't know how or why, but it doesn't shake anymore when cold. Yay! :v:

Hnnnng.
Both started lives as 86 NAs, as far as I can tell, but I suspect the white one no longer has the factory NA VG30E in it.
[editline]12th November 2015[/editline]
The blue one has the original wheels, which is awesome. I spent $200 getting the original wheels in absolutely wonderful condition but haven't had the money for tires and balance/alignment.
The white one has either 86 turbo or 87-89 wheels on the rear but the trim is not blacked out so I'm confused as to what model it really is

That's what a good 80-90s Mercedes sedan costs, or a BMW beater.
Any of you mofo's got a Masters Degree in something. Dont know what I'm getting myself into when I said I was going to get one.

it's hell
Engineering is just a gigantic abusive relationship with education.
