They're bright as fuck. You can twist it up and down and rotate it left and right.
Does anyone have access to VIN checking stuff? I'm curious to see what the reports look like on a couple old cars of mine and a buddy's. I tried motosnoop but there's some super fishy looking info reported on my own cars.

Hey does anybody know what this ticking sound could be? It comes around in the wet/cold months. Happens a lot on startup and just when I turn the key in general. It will stop after a while with zero notice. However sometimes I'll hear a couple ticks at random times while driving. Obviously coming from all the electrical goodies in the driverside footwell.
There's a lot more snooping I can do to try and isolate the problem but I just wanted to share it in case it seems obvious to anybody.

I avoided all the snow and ice Sunday and Monday, then on my way to work today a van two cars in front of me kicked a little branch up in the air over the car in front of me, hitting my windshield and chipping it. -.-

Yo so this is an unorthodox question, but it's an unorthodox problem. My parents gave me their 2001 Passat for Christmas. I finally got a handle of manual, I've gotten a few chances to get up to speed, etc. It's lovely. But there's a small issue... it's golden. Like, midas got carried away levels of golden. The entire car is gold, trimmed with silver. Like, it's maybe the worst possible color available. It's what I have to work with and it's a healthy car...
...but can anyone think of anything I can do to mitigate the gold? The silver highlights make me think getting black rims wouldn't solve anything. Paintjobs are super expensive right? Like, more than the cost of the car? Seat covers maybe?

Embrace the goooold
I've got a gold impala with black steelies and it looks pretty good
since the car is in good shape no dents or rust or anything you can expect a new color from a good paint shop for around $1200
or you could take it to maaco and have it done for $250 but they won't do any real prep work other than maybe masking everything off
or you can hit the home depot grab about a dozen cans of primer and a dozen cans of color and do it yourself for like $150-200

Well....in order of expense, I'd say you could probably:
Stickerbomb
Plastidip (beware though), also cheap looking and peels off eventually
Buy spraycan paint and attempt to give it a halfway decent paintjob (you probably won't....learned this touching up paint on my bumper....although I'm still happy with it)
Get it "wrapped" (search car wrap if unsure what this is) (marginally cheaper than real paintjob)
Body shop paint job in like white or something, non metallic "solid" paint (simple, boring colors are cheaper of course)
Ehhh it's not that bad.
A dip would be the quickest/easiest way to change it up. Also the least good looking.
There's a roller paint job, which can look quite good but is a massive amount of work.
Like they mentioned, a wrap is great, but pricey.
Paint is a few thousand for a good paint job.
All of which the cost is mitigated if you can do it yourself. I'm self taught for spraying cars and it's one of the best skills I've ever learned. If you have a garage and a few hundred I recommend it. It'll probably need to be sanded and buffed for a 'good' finish, but if you're up for a project, it's a really, really good project. If you have a friend who's sprayed before, too, that really helps, too.

you guys are gr8
Plastidip looks pretty alright, but since it's a passat I'm not trying to look like I'm trying hard. I've never heard of wrapping either, which sounds alright too. I'll see if I can afford it in a few weeks with this new job (probably not.)
Damn, though, I wish a friend of mine was local! I didn't realize DIY paint jobs were so viable, but I wouldn't really feel comfortable doing it on my own. I figured a "proper" shop paint job would be too pricy; I'd sell the car and buy a different used car with that money, but I've got a lot of time in the next few weeks though, and I'm not dating right now (actually, it's not like I haven't lived my entire life up until now without a car). Might be worth spending a few weekends down at my parents' to paint it black. TBH an amateur paintjob would probably be better than this thing. I'll look more into how feasible a DIY job would be.
Just remember; black is the hardest color to spray and have look good. It's the absolute bane of my existence (not really, but kind of).
A proper paint job consists of;
-Complete disassembly, door panels, trim, headlights, bumpers, window trim, etc.
-Complete deep cleap, then sanding of the entire car up to 600 grit.
-Masking the entire car, windows, tail light openings, etc.
-Have a fairly clean place to to the actual painting
-Large compressor (50 gal or so) to keep up with the paint gun
-Spraying base, then clear, including door jambs for a major
-Reassembly
All that takes into account no major paint defects/damage that needs to be fixed/repaired. Obviously bodywork and so forth takes more time, and priming those areas, etc.
Dip is similar, of course, but minus a lot of prep work (sanding!) still requires some removal of parts, etc. If you like the matte look dip can look amazing;

And wraps.. which ARENT diy friendly at all. Wrapping stuff is really, really hard and has a huge learning curve. IMO it's harder than paint. With paint you can sand rough clearcoat and buff it.. with wrapping it has to be perfect and wrinkle free. But the sky's the limit. Unlike dip, a wrap can be shiny like a normal paint job;

All of those options are made easier by avoiding door jambs, but also if door jambs aren't color changed it'll look ghetto and incomplete. With a dip-job it's excusable, since that's kind of temporary (rip it off before selling the car, etc). A wrap job is semi-permanent where it can last for years and years if taken care of (waxed, lol). And of course a full paint job is no going back.
There's also Macco paint centers. These places are the ultimate 'you get what you pay for ordeal'. They're cheap... so if YOU don't want to do any work, your paint job is going to suck. However, if you prep and disassemble the car FOR them, you can get a good outcome for not a lot of money. These guys spray paint all day, that's pretty much all they do. They'll do basic prep work and stuff, but if you want the professional outcome, do all the disassembly and sanding and bring it to them 90-95% ready for cleaning, masking, and spraying.
Man I can barely put stickers on my model cars right, A minute with wrap and I'd fucking die.

Power steering on the top, manual steering on the bottom, GOOD RIDDENS! Power steering is like 80lbs
for car wraps there are advertising companies that will wrap your car with a livery and pay you for it if (big if) you can get a brand you wouldn't be embarrassed to drive around with.
most of these services are scams (probably 1 in 50 are real) but legit ones do exist. just don't do any wire transfers or accept up-front payments. I've heard carvertise in particular is legit. don't know any other companies that are real about it. last I heard carvertise had a 3 month waiting list though
don't take what I say about carvertise as gospel though, it's just hearsay. do your own research if you want to go that route
[editline]6th January 2016[/editline]
all the ones that are fake are just regular cashiers check scams so they're easy to bow out of. if they send you a check and ask you to take part of it and send the rest to some guy in florida or something then you know its fake

Probably the best bet is a rolled paint job.
I did mine for $50. Didn't know I had to thin the paint a ton, it came out textured.
Ones that are thinned right come out like $2000+ paint jobs.
