New guy to the automotive thread but my brother recently bought a car and I have been helping him fix it up while he gets his license. It's an 88 Honda Prelude Si. Big problem we are having now is the car stalls randomly at red lights, it downshifts just fine but when I go to downshift into 1st gear it seems to just give out. It always starts back up after a few seconds so I am suspecting some kind of fuel starvation issue. I have replaced all the fluids as well as plugs, wires, and a fuel filter. My current suspect is either a bad fuel pump or an issue with the baffles in the tank. I have a video that my brother took of the issue. (I know vertical video sucks...) Any suggestions besides what I have mentioned? Problems aside the car is great fun to drive.
Could be an issue with iacv ?
I think im at the point where if the Blazer caught fire I wouldnt care and walk away with the insurance check. Driver side CV needs replaced, but I've known about this. Just forgot to do it when the balljoints were off -_-. Then today I noticed my power steering pump is leaking fluid a bit. So on tuesday I think I'm going to do both the CV and pump. 90's vehicle + rust belt = time to scrap almost. Its done it work and I'm already on CL looking for a new vehicle.
Why are you still trying to save that thing? Surely by this point you've spent enough money on it that you could have bought a much better one in better condition.
So nobody knows if i can swap using that tranny/engine?
So nobody knows if i can swap using that tranny/engine?
You can put any engine in any car depending o cthe amount of work you want to do. I was actually being serious when I said you could buy an entire gran prix with motor for what you intend to pay for the motor. Im almost certain there is a gm forum out there that lists weather those transaxles interchange, but y thought is the grand prix has a more robust transaxle than your lesabre. Also I can not really recommend doing something like that to a lesabre. If your looking to experiment I encourage you to do so, but a front wheel drive gm vehicle just seems like the wrong platform. Its way too hard to deal with.
yeah that engine combo would work. it's the exact same block casting as what comes in those so it should bolt right up. you may or may not need a better fuel pump to keep up with the blower though who knows about the tranny though. transaxles aren't my thing you could make it work either way
So nobody knows if i can swap using that tranny/engine?
You absolutely can. But are you really sure you want to?
those engines make way too much power for such a poorly balanced FWD street car imo, but not near enough to actually have fun with
Why are you still trying to save that thing? Surely by this point you've spent enough money on it that you could have bought a much better one in better condition.
Not including tires, I have probably $500 total into it. But yea, I'm looking for a new vehicle. My goal is for the Blazer to get through Winter 2016 then scrap/sell it. 17.5 years would be plenty of lifetime for this vehicle
do you live in a place where emissions matter? because that would probably be a problem too. Not to mention the fact that its a fuck ton of work that isnt worth doing to that car if it runs fine. I drove a grand prix at work with that engine. im not sure why you would want to spend all that money for that. sell the car and buy something worth engine swapping if thats what you want to do you will go from having <200hp at the crank to <240hp at the crank (numbers based off of wikipedia). tldr: don't put $1500 into a $1500 car unless its going to be fun
I've put over $9000 into my $700 car oh god why does this have to be page 2. (Includes the 4.2k i spent on my other E30 that had the S52 that i parted out)

I wanna put a supercharged engine into my lesabre cuz it would be awesome and the engine currently doesnt run so great
why don't you try a tune up instead of an engine swap
I wanna put a supercharged engine into my lesabre cuz it would be awesome and the engine currently doesnt run so great
I don't want to write a long winded response on why that isn't a good idea, so good luck and I guess do it if it makes you happy.
why don't you try a tune up instead of an engine swap
Why not get the experience of the joy of engine swapping? Although, I say that as someone who's never done it and really, really wants to have a flat spot on my property to do it.
"joy"
there's no joy in engine swaps
The joy level would really depend on what car and if you're doing just a plain swap or putting an entirely different engine in that requires custom mounts and wiring harness. Even then, you gotta do lots of work.
there's no joy in engine swaps
Only tears of shame as you do things you never thought you would have to do....
tears of regret*
there's no joy in engine swaps
I'm doing an engine swap :(
The joy comes after you've done swap, if the car hasn't been burned to the ground already Semi-related, LS swaps are supposedly easy though right? I'm talking mostly about the electrical side of things though
I got some more info on that Dodge Dakota. It's a 2001 v8 SLT Quad cab with 160k miles. Anyone have experiences with Dodges?
tears of regret*
That come with feeling dirty all over. "I told myself I would never do wiring like that, but I just had to get it running...."
I got an Opel Astra H model 2005 about a week ago. I'm about to turn that beast into a beautiful one.
Could be an issue with iacv ?
We got it going now, either the gas gauge lies or there is a fuel tank problem. Put a half a tank in it and it runs like a top now.
I got some more info on that Dodge Dakota. It's a 2001 v8 SLT Quad cab with 160k miles. Anyone have experiences with Dodges?
Dakotas are tanks. Good little trucks. With some engine work they scream since they arent too heavy. I remember the Dakota R/T being pretty popular to mod. As for how the trucks are, I see a lot kicking around (older ones) and never any similar yeared fords and chevs so they must be holding up good? 160k miles is up there tho, what do they want for it?

It's got one major fist sized dent right behind the right headlight and the clearcoat is gone on most of the car as well as paint peeled down to primer on the hood. Unfortunately it isn't 4wd.
