So It's the time in my life when I get my first car, and I've been scouring Craigslist for something. my budget is 4k, and I found this nice looking Volvo and I was wondering what you guys who know more about cars then I do think about it.
What do you want? A car? A truck? Midsize? Sedan? Coupe?
What do you want? A car? A truck? Midsize? Sedan? Coupe?
The two types of car I definitely don't want are a truck or a van. I like wagons a lot, and honestly that Volvo looks pretty perfect to me, I just posted it here because I wanted sort of a second opinion on it.

I guess I didn't really answer your question too well. :v:
I would most prefer a sedan or a wagon, but I'd take a coupe if it was all I could find that looked any good.
Still dont get why you're changing the pistons out. Headers will net you 20+ horsepower easily, spend the money there.
Chances are your trans is fine, just put a shift kit in it and it'll be night and day
Um trans is not fine its pissing fluid out of every seal and it say for years prior to me buying it.

My first was a Volvo. I made two huge mistakes, but you won't be. The first being I bought an uncommon V6...the second being I bought a sedan rather than a wagon.
That said, yes please, these cars last forever and are very comfortable
Its 47 years old its got 97,000 miles on it at least and it sat for probably 25-30 years in a a garage.
As for pistons I want to up the compression ratio.

Maybe. My dad is actually checking out the Volvo right now after I texted him about it, and he really likes the idea of it, but I'll tell him about that Jeep if the Volvo doesn't look any good for one reason or another.
30 mpg is really, really grannying it in a t5, you'd see ~22uk mpg average, thats what my parents used to get in an s70 t5 2.3 of the same generation and that wasn't used that hard
the one I drove (a 1999 model I think) I got 25 us mpg (30 ish uk) without any weird hypermiling techniques. driving in britain is different than driving in the US, we hardly ever stop moving. you can expect to average or exceed whatever your rated highway mileage is in most of the united states

Eugene and Salem probably have better cars than Corvallis, Portland though by far has the best cars.

Integras and Civic hatchbacks are super versatile, I've stuffed tons of furniture in my cars that most people usually ask where the truck is. Not to mention they get pretty good mileage, are super easy to work on, parts are cheap, aftermarket is plenty and JDM motors are bottom dollar low mile deals.
XJ Jeep Cherokee's are also really good value if you can find one with a 4.0, good luck finding one that's in nice shape though.

that's not bad but it'll cost more to insure, use more fuel, and will roast your ass in the summer
Moved it 5 god damn feet.

I hate cars. Fuck 'em. I'm going to go build my engine. Fuck the other Daytona.
Speaking of annoying boots going bad; what are the typical signs of tie rods going bad anyways? This squeak isn't going away at all and is getting annoying but I don't see any signs of issues with the joints. Been needing an alignment for forever though.
Wait Volvo wagons are FWD? That changes everything I thought about them
If it moves really easy, it's bad. A good joint will have resistance. Same with bearings. Sounds backwards, but moving easy is a bad thing. Trust me, just replace them. I hated that shit so much and I'm glad it's gone.

Now I can buy all the alcohol and...... do not that much more!
Isn't FWD better than RWD in some cases? With the weight of the engine over the drive wheels and a much smaller/lack of a driveshaft wouldn't it mean there's more readily available power to accelerate with?

thats why fwd is faster off road where there's not shit for traction anyway, but on road you can hook up better with a rwd car.
Comes down to personal preference, really. I like RWD better - I find it more fun to drive when you can push the ass end out, and generally RWD drivetrains are simpler and less compact, meaning easier to work on.
in rallying a front wheel drive car is always faster than rear wheel drive and unless you're making huge power with a million dollar build fwd is usually faster than awd
more so in grass roots, in pro rallying they're all making too much power to hook up with only 2 driven tires

I tend to like fwd cars. rwd is fun but my driving style is tailored to front wheel drive since that's what I learned to drive fast with
Violent sputter? Or what? My dad's Honda had a bad cat and it would chug and sput unless you waled on it. It was only getting 21mpg instead of the usual 38. Smashed the cat and now it's good.
You'd be driving and when the tach is floating around the 2500 RPM range the engine will start to sound like it's missing extremely badly and then after a few seconds it snaps right back to acting fine. Generally there's no way to reproduce it on demand but I had it happen once while on a dynamo during an emissions test and the exhaust went so rich it pegged the hydrocarbon test and the whole thing aborted on the spot.
I've been chasing this problem along with a very high emissions problem for years and I can't fucking nail down what's doing it. Paperwork proves it can do better than this.

Whoa whoa, that CV axle is still perfectly fine! Just buy it a new boot/straps and "rebuild" it with far superior grease. Parts store axles are built with shitty grease and subpar boots which are designed to fail, you'll actually be upgrading it.
You can now drink and drive.

Depends on the state actually, there's a couple that allow you to literally drink and drive and quite a few which have no open container laws.

Ball joints don't squeak, bushings, struts and metal on metal squeak.

Nah they do, the ball joints on my evo squeaked whenever I turned the wheel. They've been replaced since then.
nothing wrong with fwd
On a car with that much weight in the back I have worries about lift-off oversteer and fish tailing. Without drive wheels in the back to keep it in check it's a gigantic pendulum.
Isn't FWD better than RWD in some cases? With the weight of the engine over the drive wheels and a much smaller/lack of a driveshaft wouldn't it mean there's more readily available power to accelerate with?
As the car accelerates, the weight is thrown backwards onto the rear wheels and off of the front. This reduces traction at the front and increases it at the rear. Take two car of similar weight and power, the rear wheel drive one would out-accelerate the front wheel drive one. Parasitic loss from the driveshaft would only account for a fraction of one horsepower or so.
Hey guys, back for more advice. The Volvo turned out to be a bust, my dad (who is pretty handy with cars) checked it out and it was in far worse shape then advertised and he said I should look elsewhere, so I did, and I have a few more options now.
These cars are a selection of vehicles that me and my dad searched for this evening and we want to try and narrow this list down a little more.

What would you guys say about these choices here? I'm most interested in the '89 Mercedes, '96 Impala, or '99 528i. All of them sound like fun drives and pretty good overall vehicles, but Foresters have appealed to me a good bit in the past too.
The Golf and Prelude I'm a little unsure on because of the lack of images, I tend not to trust those ads as much since I feel like someone who doesn't take the effort to take good images may not take as good care of the car.
Also, I may be reading into it too much, but the person not showing the left side of the Prelude puts me off a little too. Would it be possible for the Prelude to be more susceptible to rust being a vehicle owned on the coast, too?
I'd say take the Merc if it runs good. It looks pretty well cared-for.
