A couple years ago, I just started randomly tracking my gas milage in a Google Docs spreadsheet because I wanted to fuck around with the formulas. Then I wanted to fuck around with Python / SQLite, so I turned my spreadsheet into a webapp.

I'm okay with this. I could get alot better if I did not have a loud exhaust and wanting to listen to it rumble instead of music.

But don't the EF models usually get 40-50MPG any way? I know the CRX gets about 50.

I don't track my fuel consumption. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life....
My car has a computer in it that tracks my wastefulness for me :B
Can someone school me on why VW are considered so unreliable? I've craved a GTI for a long time and now that I actually have money to get one used with like 50-70k miles I'm having second thoughts. I'm looking at a 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo right now and getting pretty close to pulling the trigger too, does anyone have any opinions on that?

for volkswagens, as long as it's made after 2005 it's good
veloster turbos are mad as hell though so buy that
as long as it's made after 2005 it's good
In terms of the GTI? My friend was telling me horror stories about someone's 2014 GTI and I've read some mediocre reviews on other new models, apparently the 2011 GTI is supposed to be solid but other years like 2013 are no good.
hyundai's coolest car is their genesis coupe though so consider that as well
hyundai's coolest car is their genesis coupe though so consider that as well
Damn, those are fun looking.. I like having a car I can live in though, which is why I'm leaning heavy on hatches. When I test drove the Veloster I was pretty blown away by all the fancy tech on the interior, I'm not a fan of shitty infotainment systems or hyper-gimmicks like Chevy's in-car "WiFi" but man, keyless entry / start are absolutely insane. After driving a salvaged 2008 VW Rabbit for 3 years, ziptying my radiator to the frame and buying cheap Chinese iPod-to-Aux converter cables just to play music in my car, having all that and Bluetooth sounds pretty nice.
[editline]3rd August 2015[/editline]
I hate when sites list every single common feature of a car alongside the options and upgrade packages.. It's unbelievably annoying trying to pick out stuff like Bluetooth or a sunroof when I have to read "power windows. power steering. power locks. power alarm. power seats. power mirrors." over and over again.
Any thoughts on an e39 540i? What have you heard about them, good, bad? Are they specifically unreliable or just "normal" with the usual BMW electrical gremlins and cooling system issues?

Electrical gremlins are usually the biggest issue, followed by bad wear from teenaged drivers and so on.
Did my first significant bondo job today. Thank fuck for orbital sanders.
Remember that cherry red Civic my friend owns? Well he had a need, and when you need a 40" TV.. you need a 40" TV.

Back seat was removed in favor of a trap door storage compartment and amp rack. It's finished in cedar. My buddy who owns the car is a contractor so he wanted to get creative like that. I was content for vinyl and carpet, but this was a cool break from the norm.
The top of the box is actually hinged, and seals down with some seal-y stuff and toolbox latches. The box houses some deep cycle batts, power inverter, trickle charger, etc. It all runs stupid long on that.
The whole system is isolated, of course, and can be turned on with the key in ACC (IGN connect the isolator) or a switch in the back. So even if you do kill the deep cycles.. the starter battery is still good to crank it up. Poor alt, though.
There's a switch on the dash to kill the lights, too, for night driving.
The mount is made of some 17" heavy duty RV drawer slides and a ceiling mount all welded together. It juuust fits. But it does.
And there's a 4 pin trailer harness tucked in back that can be used to plug in 2 of those Insignia rock speakers for a surround sound experience when you're watching TV in the back. The rocks fit in the back, one on either side of the box, for storage and travel.
He takes this thing to Florida all the time. Pulls the passenger seat and has a bed that fits in there. So sick.. I'm jealous thinking of sittin on the beach watching a movie in the back of a little 91 Civic. More pics when we finish off the rear.
hyundai's coolest car is their genesis coupe though so consider that as well
My Buddy just bought one, its p cool.
My brother got me floor mats and a nice steering wheel cover
List of things wrong with your car time!
In no particular order
Crown Vic:
One wheel is a steelie, rest are alloys.
Washer fluid's empty
Alignment's slightly to the right
Front bumper cover and hood are covered in little bitty paint chips because I cheaped out on getting it painted
rear bumper cover has fucky paint all around from its generally hard life as a rental car
Front right cupholder bracket is broken and doesn't stay open by itself
No TPMS for front right wheel (the steelie)
There's an unspecified squeaking coming from the front right, I think it's either the hood bumpstops or chassis bushings but not sure what exactly
The power lumbar has collapsed meaning I have to use a cushion
Right rear rotor is warped
PT Cruiser:
Very strong vibrations at <750 RPM with air conditioner on.
Front bumper cover is broken from when my dad was trying to teach my dipshit cousin to drive and she hanged it on a curb and it broke backing off of it.
Rear bumper was replaced in an accident and the paint job was botched so it's missing a good chunk of it
Strong smell of gas in cabin after extended periods of enthusiastic driving
Left front tire doesn't like to hold air for more than a week or so at a time
Gear selector knob likes to fall off
But don't the EF models usually get 40-50MPG any way? I know the CRX gets about 50.
I bought mine with 158k miles and other than a headgasket, distributor, right axle and right outer tie rod every single part on the car was pretty much original. Aside from things like brakes, plugs and wires of which the later two my Integra had the originals at a disgustingly bad 103k miles. I can't even list what I have replaced anymore and have to start listing things which I haven't.. LCAs, UCAs, front bearings, lower ball joints, alternator, plug wires(have some), master cylinder, brake lines, fuel pump/strainer/tank, rear motor mount, clutch cable, speedo cable... Anything else you could imagine replacing I've done pretty much.
After replacing the dying o2 sensor, faulty thermostat I replaced when I bought it, right rear hub/bearing and dizzy cap/rotor. The best I had got out of it before was 38, it usually averaged 32-35 in average driving with mid-high 30's for highway not really improving much over city. I had always figured that the super high figures people pull are from "extreme" cases with cheap narrow tires in hot climates in amazing running condition. I was WOT up a couple hills even for a little while, I think if I drove it nice 48 would have been possible. I don't have the stock size EF tires either, I have wider and taller EK Civic/Integra size tires.
Last winter totally murdered the fuel mileage on this car and I'm guessing it was a combination of a horribly bad thermostat, busted right rear bearing, far too big of a stock radiator and a bad o2 sensor.
You'll even see that gas mileage on these cars is greatly skewed, I figured it was primarily with people who drove super conservatively or hypermiled.
http://www.fuelly.com/car/honda/civic/1990
My Integra gets like 30-32mpg highway driving it super nice, it once broke 39 back when. I just figured this old shitty DPFI didn't do that great on the highway and just always made "good" mileage that didn't really vary that much from city to highway.
I think my mustang has a bad wheel bearing on the front, the A/C hasn't worked for a couple years and has a pretty substantial leak somewhere, and I haven't had washer fluid in it since like May.

Civic:
Burns some oil
Leaks oil from the valve cover that's probably warped
Left rear popout window is highly worn out and needs to be remounted
Drivers window regulator is bent or replacement glass is garbage
Main relay sometimes acts up
Interior carpet is junk
LCAs/UCA bushings are worn out.
Integra:
Burns oil
Smokes
Billows oil smoke after idling
Rear end makes violent popping noises when turning
Rear end makes violent popping noises when going over bumps
Rear end makes violent popping noises when getting in the car
Starting to make sickly metal noises from motor area
Drivers door will permanently lock you in if you don't keep the door unlocked or you touch the door handle when its locked
Clutch master cylinder is bad again
Front LCA bushings are bad
Rear LCA bushings are going bad
Rear UCA bushings are almost bad
Front seat foams are worn out
Still doesn't have a spare tire that fits
Missing trunk/hatch floor insert/cardboard
A/C Condenser needs to be cleaned terribly bad
EVAP delete needs to not vent into the A/C evaporator drain into the cabin
Distributor is probably going bad
Timing belt is probably going bad
A/C idler is probably bad
Battery needs to be replaced
Fender liners are shot to shit from listening to Honda-Tech on suspension choices
Front right fender is a different green
Front bumper cover is road rashed to shit
Rear bumper cover is damaged
Rear trunk floor needs to be grinded behind bumper and rust repaired due to getting rear ended still
Suspension feels unstable and unpredictable still
Struts probably need to be replaced with ITR spec Bilsteins
Too slow
Oh the joys of being far too familiar with a car
[editline]3rd August 2015[/editline]
I really think I have a problem though, I'm one of those people who insist their car is falling apart when along side many shitboxes it still looks like a brand new car.
List of things wrong with my CVPI:
O/D won't switch in gear
A/C is sorta schizophrenic when the engine's hot
Rough idle when hot, very light
Abysmal gas mileage regardless of aggressive/light/highway/city/heavy load/light load even for a vic
Really need new seat covers
two rims are gloss black steelies, two rims are matte
Needs a new paintjob from service nicks and discoloration (gonna go all black at maaco when it's time)
Rear right door is broken from a botched attempt to restore service to the inner handle (rear left works from both sides though)
Front seats are cloth, back seats are all vinyl instead of cloth/vinyl
Pretty short list but then again I've spent 10,000+ upfitting and working on this thing
New shocks/struts, new sway bar links, new differential lock, new balljoints, new oil cooler and control arm bushings, new rebuilt trans @ 122k, new PCM, new electric throttle, new o2 sensors, police console/radio/lightbar controller, front and rear fullsize interior lightbars, headlamp wigwags, corner and taillight strobes, PA/Horn, laptop and mount, dashcam annnnnnd that's all I can think of at the moment
List of things wrong with my golf:
Engine "drinks" lots of oil (1l every 1000 km)
The AC sucks
AC compressor is on its way out
Front suspension makes noises (coupling rod mount is bad)
When its hot outside, the engine makes less power (missing air inlet hose)
Front doors need new Central locking modules (micro switches are bad)
Heat exchanger is leaking (is getting replaced next month)
^Smells like coolant inside when i turn the heat on
V-belt tensioner is making noises
Rear hatch door closes only by force
Front left door subframe needs new seals
Reverse gear makes noises (possibly bad synchro gears)
What's wrong with my Commodore?
Too much tread left on rear tyres
Fucking dangerous to drive in wet weather, even at slow speeds (Thanks Holden engineering)
cd player spits out cd's when it's cold
handbrake cable slightly stretched
It's a VX Commy
Pulsar
No compression in any cylinders
Brake fluid is disappearing from somewhere, but very slowly
Odometer and trip meter don't work, neither does fuel gauge. All repair guides are show completely different cluster internals (wtf)
When it had some compression, no heater cos no thermostat. can't find a replacement thermostat (WTF)
Evo
handbrake is useless on hills, any more brake adjusting and the wheels can't turn
Can't see much out of the tinted windows because rollcage
can't adjust brightness on dash lights
Boost leak :( oem part is very expensive
What's wrong with my 'stang?
The Original owner had it painted blue, which is peeling in some areas showing the silver underneath.
Bad drivers side header ghasket meaning the O2 sensor reads lean.
"Aftermarket" bucket seats broke so I'm gangster leaned out.
2nd gear synchro shot
Windshield shot
That's about it.
made in the USA
