Now that I think of it, is this car I am interested in a scam of sorts? Listing it in NYC craigslist even though the car is 5+ hours away in Maine just to reach a wider audience, but the owner says he is willing to drive it down to NY (not ship, drive it himself). Everything on the car checks out, autocheck was clean, but I just think it's kinda weird. No demand to only use Western Union or Paypal yet. The owner seems very friendly and said he is willing to get a PPI at a saab mechanic for me before driving it down.
because NYC
Sony Xplode amps tend to fail that way. Only the old black 1000+ amps are any good anymore, and then you have to have a touch of luck. I'm not saying they all fail like that, just that in recent years (like last 10 or so) Sony has been pretty subpar on the ICs that go into them including the power MOSFETS that drive the speakers. With out really good cooling they burn out, what happens is after so many times of getting to TJmax temp threshold they lose the ability to operate at those temps and start having issues at lower temps and simply getting hotter faster when pushed. I've done a fair amount of work on amps of my own and for friends and sadly unless you can find the same or better handling MOSFETS on digikey your kinda out of luck. Alot of times also, the thermister/temp sensor won't be properly attached to the amps case, telling the amps it's not that hot when it should be going "protect mode". Other times the thermister/temp sensor simply doesn't do it's job also ruining the amp. Most amps also don't have over voltage/load, under voltage or short circuit protection as you'd expect. It's there, just not like it's claimed to be, they just handle the abuse till they can't anymore.
My brother has a cap laying around but, they take a lot of prep to wire in don't they? You can't just plug and play iirc.
My brother has a cap laying around but, they take a lot of prep to wire in don't they? You can't just plug and play iirc.
You use a resistor between a pole and ground, etc... I haven't used a cap in a long time. They're rarely necessary.
I've been using imgkk for years
I used imgkk until it stopped being free and shut down or whatever, then I went to Dropbox.
That wonderful feeling when you save $2/gallon on gas because you decided to wait with filling up.
That wonderful feeling when you're (almost) paying $2/gal on gas because you're driving premium.
New amp works great. Kicks the shit out of that xplod pos. 👍
That wonderful feeling when you save $2/gallon on gas because you decided to wait with filling up.
Not sure how the hell that worked out for you, but unless gas changes by more than $0.30 for me, its not even worth shopping around for a different price.
My brother has a cap laying around but, they take a lot of prep to wire in don't they? Basically it acts like an electrical "shock absorber" so when the amp hit's it continues to get the juice it needs and doesn't dim the lights. Some cars throw errors if voltage drops below a certain limit, the cap also helps in those situations. Battery positive to cap positive then to amp positive, same with negative.
Battery+ Battery- | | | | Cap+ Cap- | | | | Amp+ Amp-
Easy. If you want I can snap a pic of how mine is setup so you can see. [editline]30th August 2015[/editline] And I have had my headlights dim from my sub hitting. :v:

It's going to happen when you first hook it up regardless of what you do, but it wont hurt it. If your lights dim, you NEED a cap or problems down the road can/will occur. It's a problem preventer, trust me. If not for my cap when my alternator cable came loose and melted to the EGR tube on my car, the battery would have taken all the brunt of the sudden discharge causing a fire. It kinda helped save the electrical system.
jaguar xjs y/n ?

I used to love going to our recycling center to scavenge the massive capacitors from copying machines businesses throw out. I got one that was 3 farads once, it was great. I melted it while trying to drive a washing machine motor off of it.
jaguar xjs y/n ?
Buy an 80s Mercedes-Benz instead
Say goodbye to all the money you will put into that car to keep it running.
this is what i keep hearing, is it really that bad? its probably the only car in the universe that i "want", pretty sure it once visited me in a dream...
2 farard might be overkill [T]http://imgur.com/AG9IPDd.jpg[/t]
Mine is 5 farad, overkill for just one amp. 2 will be just fine unless you go for a huge system. Pretty crazy though.
this is what i keep hearing, is it really that bad? its probably the only car in the universe that i "want", pretty sure it once visited me in a dream...
Ford engineers that visited the Jaguar factory after buying the company said the only place they saw worse conditions was in a Soviet-era GAZ factory, where if a bird in the rafters shat on a car-in-progress, the workers would just paint over it. It was built by idiots with parts from the lowest bidder, the biggest issue of which is the Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrical components, which shorted and rotted within five years, causing the car to experience cascading failures. There's a company (shown on an older Top Gear, post-2003 era) that basically rebuilds the XJS as how it should have been; a nice comfortable grand touring car. They tune the engine and suspension, install new electronics, etc, but it significantly drives up the price of buying one.
Guys, guys.. caps on audio systems are pretty much useless. As in, unless you have a free one don't buy one! Caps run at a 5 time constant theory. It takes 5 time constants to charge up 100% and same to discharge. Each time constant comes with a %, check out this graph; You'll see that after 1 time constant it charges 63%, etc. Once it's at 100%, one time constant drops it down to only 37% charge. If it were on a slop of 1 the theory would work for 'helping' audio systems, but since it takes longer to charge up than it does to discharge, it's always playing catch up. So, that's a bummer. That being said, there's better way to help out with your charging system if there's light dimming with the bass hits. If there's not light dimming, don't fuss with it. The 'big 3' is the go-to upgrade. Check our your factory grounds and alternator wire.. tiny I bet! If you're running a 4 ga wire to your amp, having a 10ga battery ground sure isn't useful. So the big idea is to upgrade the 3 main wires for the charging system, preferably with 0ga. -Alt + to battery + -Battery - to chassis ground -Engine to chassis ground That provides a much better charging path, providing the alt the ability to have full output. If that doesn't do it, upgrade dat alt. In the case of a cap, if the charging system is juuuuuuust not quite doing it, and you're not blasting rap, a cap can sometimes take care of it.
Would the "big 3" help with my lights dimming when turning on A/C? When I turn the aircon or another load on, my car likes to believe that the engine disappeared and that the transmission should make up for that by kicking down to a gear that doesn't actually exist.
I used imgkk until it stopped being free and shut down or whatever, then I went to Dropbox.
it's still running, facepunchers who hopped on early all got unlimited premium accounts I would probably use imgur if imgkk didn't come first
shock and ewww... [IMG][/IMG]
