Relay didn't help; oh well. Checked for spark and what do you know, contacts in the dizzy are nastied to shit and the rotor is pretty messed up too; going to clean them up just for a hopeful mild start so i know that's the definite issue.
A new garage. A new airplane hangar? So this eas on your dads massive cuda racecar? That sucks.
Roof leaks in it and its getting soft/saggy, we threw 2 tarps over it for a quick fix but its getting dangerous. We're gonna double it from 80x40 to 160' long 40' wide. Yeah the cuda, he'd like to get sponsored but with the car blowing up and shit left and right it aint easy. So far I think his best pass was 6.50 @ 224mph in the quarter, thats running shitty, should go high 5s. Monkeys addicted to speed.
So, my best friend who's stationed over seas wants me to swing down to Danville and look at a car for him (about a two hour drive). Looking at the ad, something just feels a bit off on it. Don't know what it is though. What say you guys? https://danville.craigslist.org/cto/5217719606.html

I'd also highly suggest testing the coil and ICM as those are two very common failure points. If the inside of your distributor is caked with red dust, the bearings went bad and heat cooked the internals. I've experienced what 110k miles looks like on the plug wires, dizzy cap and rotor, It's actually quite difficult to tell the difference between like a 5k mile cap/rotor and 50k miles at a glance. If it was the cheaper simple parts you would just be experiencing misfires, CEL's and will definitely still fire and run or at the very least attempt to. You'll also want to check your cam/crank sensors in the dizzy since the only sensors which will keep the car from running are located in the dizzy. Theoretically you could unplug the O2, IACV, TPS, IAT, MAP, ECT and the motor should still run although I've never tried all of them at the same time of course.
There's something absolutely intoxicating about watching the ballet of the speedo and tachometer as you're accelerating hard.
Sorry about the motor sally. :( What was it? Can't tell. [editline]13th September 2015[/editline]
The saddest thing about watching those videos is seeing the fluid just pour out
I get too sentimental about cars but yeah watching them puke everything out after you ran them too hard, I think I'd feel really guilty.
That string of buzzwords at the bottom is offputting the fact that interior is in great shape but never shows it the cat that only pics of it are on trailer.
For me not telling the mileage and having it rebuilt pretty massively is a bit concerning as well.
For me not telling the mileage and having it rebuilt pretty massively is a bit concerning as well.
If it even has the aftermarket parts do some research and make sure they arnt trying to pass off stock or replacement parts as performance.
It's not for me. But yeah, glancing at the ad I'm majorly iffy.
It's not for me. But yeah, glancing at the ad I'm majorly iffy.
I would feel iffy as well. Ill tell you why it has aftermarket parts, and is on a trailer, and why he has "12" of them. He has maybe two and that car is the parts car. He was hunting for oem parts to fix a different car, got what he wanted and now its up for sale with the aftermarket parts he got off a different car he had. Thats also why its still on the trailer that he towed it home on. Hes never driven it or titled it in his name, just towed it home, got what he wanted and now wants a return. Thats why its "ready to put back on the road." I dont like the ad.
It sounds like your average DSM lol, people usually collect quite a few of them who're into them. I really wouldn't question it too much unless he seems super sketchy to talk to.
"Hey C3 can you come to xxxxxxxx, my vehicle wont start. Could you bring your tools too" "Sure thing, I'm like 10 minutes away" I get there and yep, no spark to the plugs. Cylinders are wet as fuck too. While I'm talking on the phone with another friend about the hockey game we're going to next week, something hits me in the face. Friend broke his fucking distributor rotor. Like I dont know how inept you have to be to do this, but to break the rotor has got to be high up there. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11823009/other/Snapchat--6001079928662890718.jpg[/t] So now do we already not know whats wrong, but now hes on the hook for a new rotor. Not the way I wanted my sunday night to go.

Why is it that everyone who likes those cars does this?! lmao. And they always 'know them inside and out and have been working on them for 50 years.' Do yourself a favor and if you're buying a DSM only buy ones that aren't molested / basically stock. 90% of the 'built' ones are cobbled up pieces of shit. The good parts are they're easy to fix.. if it's been too built and cobbled just build a fresh stock engine and stuff it in, untune, run stock. Done. The turbos w/ auto trans are pretty slow, and not terribly fun to drive, in my opinion. DSM mated with a manual trans is great, though. Basically if you get it prepare for it to be a car you need to wrench on to keep it worth a damn. This summer we've touched on just about everything on these damn cars, from suspension to engine work, to fixing interior issues. The last modified one we got ended up going to a buddy who beat the ever loving piss out of it and roasted the #1 piston. A semi-built DSM getting pinned to redline over and over again is trouble in the making. It sucks because it was a sweet car to drive, but that's the breaks. The lastest compression test on it showed 160, 160, 160, 130 and that jumped to 160 with a couple drops of oil, so rings most likely. Lord knows what it's at now that it's only running on 3 (feels like). The winter beater talon just got limped over here this evening.. leaking shit out of every gasket on the engine. Lot of work to do before winter hits on that one.
Anybody here have a CB unit in their vehicle? I was thinking about getting into it, to have a weatherband and also for entertainment on road trips. I've also heard they are pretty handy when things get hairy on the road, and you can find out from some helpful folks about the accident up ahead or weather conditions near them. Does anybody have any opinions on it? I've heard its not totally dead, but not anywhere near as popular as it used to be (that might be a good thing, though).
I think you about summed it up! Truckers still seem to be fairly into it, and weatherband is nice in a pinch. The units that need to have the antenna tuned to the CB unit need a special tool and some knowledge to make them work together, but from what I've gathered some newer ones don't require that song and dance. There's also HAM radio that some folks get into in the vehicles, too. There's a club around here that does that kind of thing. Not sure the big difference in the crowd you get, though. Either way, you get to have a nice big whip on your car, which is fun. It's a nostalgic thing.. connecting with a select group who also are so equipped. In an age with smartphones/mobile internet it doesn't seem relevant.. until you do it. It's nice to get away from all that texting and stuff, kind of.
Texas here, I rode along on a semi for part of a summer to get some cash and the CB was mostly dead with a few idiots talking shit at each other at one point. But it looks super cool in a car, so I've always wanted to set it up anyway.
That was about my findings after hours of internet research. I just want to try and have some fun with it, and in the grand scheme of things, it is not that expensive to get into and set up in my suv. However, as is common with newer cars: space is at a premium. Thats where I found this really neat unit: http://www.wearecb.com/cobra-75wxst-all-in-the-handset-cb-radio.html And I'm all for things that work well but aren't permanent to the vehicle so you can take them with you when you get a different car, so this antenna sounds neat: http://www.wearecb.com/wilson-little-will-magnetic-cb-antenna.html
Can confirm my brothers DSM broke down like 4 different times, just this summer.
I built a CB into my center console, but I dont have an antenna or a working handset. [editline]14th September 2015[/editline] Hmmmm, Im considering buying a logitech G27 and trying my luck at some simulator racing. What would you guys suggest as a sim racing game that works pretty much like real life, with realistic force feedback, traction, engine, and transmission shit?
What is a DSM?
What is a DSM?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond-Star_Motors Generally it's just used to describe the Eclipse/Talon/Laser even though it really refers to much more.
Those are the only DSM's anyone cares about. :v:

[editline]14th September 2015[/editline] Awkward wording
Hmmmm, Im considering buying a logitech G27 and trying my luck at some simulator racing. What would you guys suggest as a sim racing game that works pretty much like real life, with realistic force feedback, traction, engine, and transmission shit?
it depends what you're wanting out of a game. iRacing: Good physics IIRC and they just came out with a nice dynamic tyre model that reacts to shaded parts of the track and stuff like in real life. Downside is that it's pay monthly and unless something has changed, the rating system is balls. Also it's very restrictive on what you can race If you want organised league racing, people lean towards rFactor and GSCE because it's super light to run, which makes it more accessible, and can be modded easily. A downside would be that you can't always guarantee the quality of community made content. If you aren't super concerned about a game that tries to nail the physics exactly and would rather really nice graphics, Assetto Corsa [and to a lesser extent with physics, project cars] are perfect for this, but aren't completely accurate sims
So my transmission did not survive the trip. I've bitched about second and third slipping out on hot days but now fourth does it too regardless of temperature. What gets me is that I can prevent it by just touching the shifter. Not even pressing or pushing on it. Just put my finger on it and leave it there. Won't slip out until you take your finger away and step on the gas. I'm forgiving with the other two gears but fuck this. Transmission shop did something and this time the car is going back and STAYING back there until either they fix it or discount me a new transmission because the fucked this one and can't unfuckulate it.
Got the valves out of my heads last night. What's a good way to check if the valves are good and the seats are okay? One of the valves I had to slightly sand the top of it so it'd fit through the valve guide. Looks like the top of it warped, which I imagine would involve machining. Also, the exhaust ones were a huge pain in the ass to get out because they use a 4 ribbed retainer.

Your valve stem seals may not seal at that point and you'll be burning oil in that cylinder. It's sometimes worthwhile to just get new valves. The seats themselves need to be machined, you can't just clean them up with sandpaper to make them smooth again. You also have to see if the valve is intended to sit flush. Some are multiangle, or the angle in the valve is steeper than the seat to make a smaller sealing but tighter surface. The valves themselves you can always lap. They sell a tool with a compound to do it.

Anyone know how much of a pain it is to redo an accelerator pump it as if its completely siezed

Its four phillips screws and a rebuild kit and your done. If you dont feel comfortable buy the kit and put it and the carb in a box and send it to me. Ill rebuild it. You pay shipping. No charge.
