This sounds like something I'd love to do. I'm gonna check if there's any caches around my town.
[editline]12:49AM[/editline]
Wow, there's plenty around where I live. Next week I'll look for one of them.
there's one underneath a tank in dalndox's and my area, apparently. :neckbeard:
I just found a geocache, and placed a big red magnet marked "facepunch.com"
let's hope one of the cacher's finds it, and finds this thread, and replies, though highly unlikely

should have included the full URL to this thread.
Saving up for a GPS device now, sounds fun.
i wouldn't go spending on a GPS device before you even find your first one, it's unnecessary for urban caches. a GPS is more for rural and isolated caches.

Oh ok, so if there's one, say, on a local park I can just go there and get it?
Dozens within a few miles of my house, I'm surprised, there's a couple pretty much on my doorstep.

it's almost creepy how some of these have been under our noses the whole time. :tinfoil:
the only thing that bugs me about this whole thing is that the entire geocaching.com userbase seems to use the harry potter term "muggle" to reference people who might catch you digging up a cache. I know it's a whole hidden-in-plain-sight underground culture thing, but... come on, harry potter? :raise:
Off on a hunt this afternoon, theres at least 4 within a mile of me.
Ooo there is one 1 km from me. I think I'll do it tomorrow.
how do i get the satellite map up for this?, i can only search zip codes and look at a tiny square map of them
Just FYI to all, car GPSs usually don't work since they don't take Latitude-Longitude coordinates.
Adding Iphone app info to the OP.
Huh
Usually that is displayed under signal details, if you click the signal bars. Not having that is a bit silly since it's basically the most basic information GPS works with
Holy Fuck it's 76 where I live, and it's only like 1700 people living here :O
im going to go with my freind to find one tommorow I COULDNT DOI IT TODAY BECAUSE HES AT THE FUCKING CINEMA

On their FAQ it says it's because geocaching emerged around the time the Harry Potter books were getting popular, and it seemed a suitable term.
Sounds fun, there is at least 30 in my town that i found on their Google maps page, some really close to my house :)
What the hell, there's one right next to the entrance to the main bus terminal my the city. I go through there to uni all the time. Strange to think these things are all over the place and I've never seen one once.
You've got to look a little suspicious snooping around there.
A picture from the gallery of someone finding it. :v:

It would be awesome when you go to a foreign country and add something in the box that is only available in your country :D
There's like 100 in Bagdad, how cool is that.
It's amazing in Canada

i went today... i didnt find it :crying:
Found a couple around me today, forgot to take a damn pencil! Off back soon when i get the chance to sign.
Oh shit, I think I found one a couple years ago, and threw it away thinking it was like trash or something. :crying:
I found one under a rock and a microcache under a wet log, near a graveyard.
Didn't find many interesting things, but I left a snowglobe :3:
Aww I would love to try this. But it would be funnier with a lot of people.
This is amazingly fun when you do it with your friends and make a competition of it.
Do indoor geocaches exist? It would be an awesome mix of Urban Exploration + Geocaching, something like UrbExCaching or something.

No, they dont. Mainly because GPS units dont work well (or at all) indoors.
Also, for the people saying this would be more fun with a large group, there are hundreds of Geocaching events in North America and Europe every month, with prizes and competitions and whatnot:

The websites calender is in an annoying-as-hell format, but its navigable. Adding link to the OP.
I did this a while ago, ended up stopping because a bunch of elitest cocks started to dominate my local area with either caches that involved using cryptology to get the co-ords or involved rock climbing (some times on rocks, some times on bridges). I found some interesting ones in that time tho, including one stuck on the back of a sign in a carpark near an ikea.

dalndox and I wanted to do a little something as a chain of caches, lead to the next with a riddle. The end result would be something like a $20 gift card since we're poor, but it'd be worth it for people who want the extra adventure in our otherwise bland area. The description once we put up the starting cache would include that it's meant to be a challenge and will have a prize for first-find.
We were THINKING of doing it using nerdy references, but... I dunno if everyone will get it :v:

Went out for the first time geocaching today, found one log-only cache, didn't find the other I looked for. Was still great fun, i'll be going out again tomorrow.
