vinyl. Better in everything except size.
Your arguement has fallen on deaf ears, I'm afraid.
Mp3 [editline]08:40PM[/editline] Vinyl has terrible quality to my ears.
theoretically, but not in the real world http://www.sharoma.com/trading/loudness.htm http://georgegraham.com/compress.html
We're talking about the medium.
Maybe you are.. everyone in this thread is talking about something different
Maybe you are.. everyone in this thread is talking about something different
well fuck r8 me late
vinyl. Better in everything except size.
what about a vinyl the size of a CD!
I also think its the ease of listening to music nowadays... due to the fact that analogue technology wasn't developed and placed into the modern age is just a shame....
Yeah bro, just let me grab my pizza box sized mobile record player and go jogging.
right... since digital took over the music market completely, we are getting a compressed version of the music that we listen to... inferior to that of vinyl I can listen to classics and enjoy them on my Ipod, then I put a vinyl version of the album and they deliver so much more of the music, I feel if they didn't compress it so much from the studio and delivered what they are capable of delivering to the public then the music industry would be a lot better off
Your constant incorrect usage of the word compression annoys me, compression just means taking a data set and making it shorter. This doesn't imply nor require any form of data loss as there exist many methods to find patterns in data and store them, thus giving you lossless compression which is clearly not what you're talking about. Formats such as FLAC are compressed and lossless, thus not only can they be equivalent to your previous vinyl music, but they are superior. If you wish to get 'warmer' music from your digital collection then open up your preferred music editing software, boost the base, add some static, add some cracks and pops and voilà, you now have crap sounding audio that's 'better'.
actually he's probably talking about dynamic range compression

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_recording_vs._digital_recording "For modern recordings, the controversy between analog recording and digital recording is becoming moot. No matter what format the user uses, the recording probably was digital at several stages in its life. In case of video recordings it is moot for one other reason; whether the format is analog or digital, digital signal processing is likely to have been used in some stages of its life, such as digital timebase correction on playback." Audiophilia becomes a waste of money and time at a certain point. I honestly don't think FLAC is worth it space wise. Participate in a double blind test and really tell me if you can hear a distinct enough difference to justify the x3 space it requires. Then you go to the Analog vs. Digital thing. The sound difference isn't big enough for me to care, I want convenience. Take a guess at which that is. Digital format you can store all your music in one place without having to haul equipment and 100's of LPs.
A sacrifice has to be made somewhere. You cn have clunky formats that sound amazing, or you can have discrete, tiny, and very portable formats that sound good but not amazing. Not to mention with records and other formats like cassettes, there is audio degradation, while digital formats do not possess that.
Try 5.1 DTS and then come back and say that vinyl sounds better. [editline]07:37AM[/editline]
so far i have yet to discover superior media than vinyl
dvd-a?
Vacuum tube radios solve all those problems and restore analog sound quality to digital music. [editline]05:20AM[/editline]
CD's are fucking garbage and I wish they would switch to something else already. MP3s are no better.
They need to go back to something more durable. Maybe some sort of SD card for music. The nice thing about cassettes was that they were practically indestructable. CDs don't tend to last very long if you don't keep them almost perfectly clean. Plus, CDs don't handle hard driving too well.

Ipod is probably the best medium for convenience... quality sound and enjoyable technological experience. Owning vinyl is a whole new connection when it comes to music, if you are happy enough with your music being on your computer or ipod, then thats your life... no argument I do not care for your lifestyle, I'm talking about technology :] Surround sound CDs are absolutely POINTLESS....
Surround sound CDs are absolutely POINTLESS....
you just haven't heard Autechre in 5.1
Surround sound CDs are absolutely POINTLESS....
That's what they said about stereo in the 50's. [editline]09:08PM[/editline] No but really, I liked the 5.1 edit of Thriller. Surround adds a new level to the music. [editline]09:10PM[/editline] That is if you are not poor and irish and actually have a proper 5.1 system. Besides, it's good to have the lows going to the subwoofer, and the speakers at the back doing something else then just mimicking the ones in the front.
There's definitely a difference. If you play a comedy record, you could swear the guy is in the room next to you. It's surreal.
you just haven't heard Autechre in 5.1
surround sound music... doesn't do anything for me I've listened to it before and it really isn't that amazing, wow sounds whizzing around you all the time... its definitely no roller coaster ride :]
