This tested IE9, and guess what? Its in 3rd place just before chrome. I don't know how accurate it is but it seems legit...
Preference is also based on aesthetics, some people think IE looks cleaner than firefox or chrome.
I.E. isn't that bad... but only if you use to get a different browser.
I've actually have a number of friends in IT which claim that the newest version of IE is one of the best browsers.
Firefox (and gecko) is usually derided as slow and bloatware, webkit having a large number of issues with some specific CSS issues (transitions being just one) and iexplore usually being more secure and often faster than these. Likewise getting very decent standards support.
With opera usually being seen as the best.
Keep in mind this usually applies to the most up to date versions of the respective browsers. XP for instance can't have IE9. And there's still a massive userbase of IE6.
There's nothing distinctly bad about it, but it doesn't have anything going on for it either.
I'm on a school PC by the way.

I find it great on W7, but not so great on android.

must be a different version or something then
then again I don't like it because I find using FP impossible, typing is just... shit
Hey, Firefox works on Linux. IE9 doesn't. Ten points from Slytherin.
what the hell does being multi-platform have to do with it, I think your missing every post against yours
YOU ONLY NEED IT TO WORK FOR THE PLATFORM YOUR MAIN COMPUTER IS WORKING ON. IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT WORKS ON ALL THESE 30 DIFFERENT ONES WHEN YOU AREN'T GOING TO USE THEM ANYWAYS.
Do you get it now? If its the fastest you can possibly find on W7 and only works on W7, then get it, don't have your head up your ass about something like "Oh how many platforms it can run!", thats literally the dumbest thing I have heard in my life. Get the next fastest browser for what platform it works on, if theres something better on one platform than another, then get it, not that hard.
You'd have to be a dim wit to truly rate the needed performance of a browser only on what it runs on. God of War is only for the PS3, in your logic, it must be a terrible game. Halo is only for the xbox, must be terrible as well.
Why support microsoft though? If it's only 'as good' as others for W7, why not those others?

What if you use a lot of different machines and you like a familiar interface? It doesn't make it better or worse, but it gives a reason why you would avoid it.
I never had an issues with IE8 but I prefer the layout of Firefox and the applications for it.
Internet explore is only good for casual browsing. But there are a lot of things that don't work well with IE. For example, the battlefield 3 battlelog doesn't even work with IE for me. So I have to use firefox.
Yes, IE is really "that bad"
This isn't even a debate and I hope it's closed.

That's strange, Battlelog works perfectly for me with IE9. Must be an issue somewhere else.

People have given their perspectives for the debate and explained why they think it's bad or why it isn't so bad. If that isn't a debate, what is?
Your kind of post is one that doesn't contribute to the debate at all.
I used IE7 for years. It booted up in a fraction of the time it took the Firefox of the time (1, 2, and 3 were available by the time I switched), and used a fraction of system resources; Firefox used upwards of 200,000K of memory with youtube and 5 plain pages open, IE7 topped out at like 50,000k.
I use Firefox and Chrome now though, as I need more secure browsing than IE could provide me. Don't like the layout of the new versions of IE or Firefox, though.
It's archaic in terms of security, internet speed, and being user-friendly. I can't stress the amount of times when it constantly froze when I visited a website.

I have more stability problems with modern Firefox than I had with a out of date Internet Explorer :v:
IE (9) master race
My Dad and I call it "Internet Exploder". It's that bad.
To be honest, IE9 is leagues better than the old IE versions, and now it's at least comparable to other browsers. Chrome and Firefox are much better in versatility though.
I use IE as my browser. I tried using Firefox before and I noticed no real difference and since i'm not a "hardcore" browser user that needs addons and a millisecond faster speed I just stuck with IE.
The current IE is pretty good. But IE 7 an 8 were terrible.
I started using Firefox mainly for Ad-Block, that's the only reason. Internet Explorer is horrible due to the ads and forced settings.
I know that a few years ago Microsoft considered dropping internet explorer because of how much time they were spending repairing it all the time from constant attacks. Part of this is due to the fact that it was never very good to begin with and probably needs to be completely re-designed with security in mind. But probably the biggest reason why it has security problems is that the target audience of crackers (for malware and botnets) are older or less experienced users. Most of them use internet explorer because it serves their purpose, and they probably will never detect viruses that they may get from using un patched versions of windows and ie.
IE9 crashes for me all the fucking time.
I find it great on W7, but not so great on android.
Since my phone is too old to support flash, the stock browser had almost no benefits over Opera. And the trackball cursor is awesome. It was tons faster too and supported animated GIFs. It didn't spend 60 seconds rendering facepunch.
Then they must have had a major update at some point because now it barely runs period. Poor old Eris being left in the dust. Now I'm stuck with Opera Mini, which isn't bad, but you lose a lot of interactivity features. Maybe I'll have to look to see if they have an old apk of it somewhere.
IE is for those who dont care or dont know... The grass aint always greener on the otherside... Chrome FTW
IE isn't bad, but people who still use it should seek out better browsers.
IE9 is great for me. Most of the time it runs just like I want it to, I mostly use firefox though.
It's quite painful to use, compared to how comfortable browsers Opera and Firefox are.
I use Firefox for its generally better extensions and my ability to prevent sites from using fonts other than Calibri because the fonts some websites look ugly to me. Chrome can't do that (I've tried) and I don't think Opera can either. Plus, Opera's ad blocker doesn't work at all. I've tried a bunch of ad blockers and they never work. Plus, I'm able to block blip.tv ads with Firefox.
