Jesus Christ every metal thread turns into a war between sub-genres. Not everyone is going to appreciate modern death metal and consequently the majority of those that do will not like old school 80s metal. Everyone has different tastes in the wonderfully broad spectrum of metal we have, so let's leave it at that.

He was just generalising that the music posted by most deemed to be headbang-incucing was just crappy modern melodeth. And to some extent I agree, it's just not necessary to verbalise that opinion; the metal community whines and bitches about what real metal is. If someone thinks Mastodon is *core who cares anyway? Does it stop you from enjoying it?

Mastodon's first album was really sludgy. Sludge is a form of hardcore. And they still have elements of hardcore and tour with hardcore bands to this day. It's not that much of a stretch.
