• The Facebook Generation (and Why Society's Future Might Be Fucked)

I'm not so worried about new communications technologies making people pseudo-celebrities, but that people are just starting to become awkward to talk to face to face or over the phone even. That's what I worry about.
people are dumb you just see them more because of the internet now
They'll grow out of it.
Older generations always end up looking down on younger ones, it doesn't matter what they do. And essentially I agree with the op, he's just exaggerating a little.
Itchy I love you.
Sounds like you need to get worthwhile friends.
Thread title should be "The Fearmongering Media Generation (and Why Actual Conversations Might Be Fucked)"
i hear about all this facebook shit about about friends acting a fool not a single one of my friends acts like generic facebook tools you people's friends must just be retarded or something i dunno
Interesting read. Also, the new generation will be so used to things such as conversing over the internet or thanking someone for something they did (in real life, such as hosting a party) via Facebook that they will have a complete lack of social skills.
If everyone is used to that, those will become social skills Your logic fails :frog:
People are like sheep. Sheep are dumb. What I mean by this is, for example, if you have a line of sheep going somewhere, and you put your foot in front of the leader, it will jump over it. You can take your foot out, and the rest of the sheep will also jump. Facebook is just another trend, and it'll pass soon. I have one, but I mainly use it to connect with my few close friends and family, and for people who I don't have their phone number. (Ex. Don't know homework assignment for x class, person I know in that class is on, ask them.) Something else will come along soon enough, facebook will be phased out like MySpace and we'll get to read another thread about you bitching about x. Just because a lot of people have facebook and some people obsess over it isn't a prediction of the impending doom of our generation. A lot of people now have T.V.s. Some people watch them in moderation. Some people are glued to their T.V. Same goes for video games. Same goes for A LOT of stuff. Facebook is just one thing.
I normally check facebook every time I use my computer. I mostly use it for just chatting to friends, organising what I may be doing later or use it to share things that I have found interesting or whatever. I have maybe 160 friends on it. I don't really see much of what OP is trying to say. However I believe this to be age, back when everyone was on facebook it was kinda how OP explained it. Most people I don't think use facebook as much other than a tool for keeping in contact.
If everyone is used to that, those will become social skills Your logic fails :frog:
How sociable is using Facebook compared to going out? Not very...
op is just mad because he can't have as many friends as me
...and Why Society's Future Might...
I hate it when people capitalise mid-sentence...
How sociable is using Facebook compared to going out? Not very...
I never said it was. :downs: I simply said that if everyone is used to using Facebook/the internet to communicate, those WILL be social skills, as opposed to OUR definition of social skills. Once again, :frog:
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. - Socrates

"What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?" - Plato

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise [disrespectful] and impatient of restraint" - Hesiod, 8th century BC
Also why do you care? For someone who talks about obsession you seem strangely obsessed with your ex's Facebook. Read your post, you're the exact type of person you're complaining about. People love attention, they've always loved attention. Give them an outlet for that attention and they'll use it.
There are a lot less problems then the most of you think there are. You're over-analyzing.
Bro I hate to break it to you, but people just like () things. Deal with it. I'm not saying Facebook is glorious or anything like that, but making rants like this isn't exactly helping either, especially when there are over 500 million Facebook members. Just deal with it and move on. Next thread please.
Oh yeah, it's all (insert generation here)'s fault
I have 21 friends on Facebook. They are all either family or close friends. I delete idiots on sight.
lol op doesn't like fb cause he doesn't have any friends to add [editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
I have 21 friends on Facebook. They are all either family or close friends. This thread is why I have no facebook account.
ITT: OP lives in the past.
He actually has a serious point. Many of the friends on facebook I have talk to me a lot online, but avoid conversations in real life. I think it is really making people anti-social.
I think it is really making people anti-social.
This.
Stop derailing with your facebook shit dumbass. This thread is why I have no facebook account.
because you don't have any friends to add to it
Interesting OP but i've herd it all before, But hey... I agree with you. But facebook is great for making meet ups or arranging sports events for you're team... At least I think so!
Just an FYI to everyone in this thread, your classmates aren't dumb for not using grammar or not spelling correctly. It's just that they don't care about using spelling and grammar, learn the difference.
He actually has a serious point. Many of the friends on facebook I have talk to me a lot online, but avoid conversations in real life. I think it is really making people anti-social.
or maybe you would never have talked to those people in the first place online or otherwise if it weren't for facebook
He actually has a serious point. Many of the friends on facebook I have talk to me a lot online, but avoid conversations in real life. I think it is really making people anti-social.
As mentioned by a user in this thread, since you're talking with people (especially your friends), you are not anti-social. It's just easier to communicate to another person with text.
