• The Facebook Generation (and Why Society's Future Might Be Fucked)

I rarely go on Facebook, but I do have like 900 friends. I don't give a fuck.
It seems like a social norm that, not accepting somebody you know on facebook, is rude.
Social interactions change. I'm willing to bet that people had a similar reaction when the telephone became popular. [editline]6th April 2011[/editline] Also, I like having lots of friends on Facebook because I like seeing how everyone's day is going, I like to share my opinions when my friends ask questions, I like to ask questions myself, and I like chatting with people I barely know.
Overreacting.
I don't have a Facebook, I use the good old-fashioned postal system to send a message to my acquaintances. If the letter arrives in less than three days we call it an "Instant-Message"!. I hear pretty soon they are going to put some lines in, so I can communicate with my fellow gentlemen from the club with electricity! How novel is that?
itchy your thread almost made me go make a facebook account just to see what people i know are up to because i can't speak to them in person due to various medical complications then i decided against it out of sheer blind stubbornness (i.e. "i haven't had a facebook up till now and it hasn't done me much harm and making one at this point would be a sign of weakness :argh:")
i just use Facebook to talk to friends and acquaintances. Makes it easy to plan events, parties, etc. Also my statuses are either inside jokes with my friends or showing them whats new in the news like games, movies, etc. Sure i know a few people who obsess over it, but if you take Facebook away, they will just find something else to obsess over. End of a generation as we know it, i think not. Also, its just another website i check when im bored. I see it as a forum that all my friends use.
Read thread. Discount Itchy. Standard.
214 friends. I talk to maybe 20 or so.
To be honest the whole OP seemed to be begging the question that people being on facebook was a bad thing in the first place. Besides being a a business platform (which pisses me off to an extent), the damage facebook is doing is hugely, hugely overreacted. If the people obsessing over it weren't obsessing, they'd just do it over something else. But for the vast majority is not much more than a moderate distraction.
You're blowing it a bit out of proportions.
I like Facebook because it has kept me connected with friends from high school, I other wise would have likely drifted away from. It's a good way to organize special get together's with your friends, as well being aware of local events happening. When people start abusing it by spamming status updates, pictures, and writing on each others wall, is what makes it bad. I find the writing on the wall part annoying, because 95% of those people could have just texted that person and kept the conversation to themselves.
Facebook is a really useful site when it comes to talking to people, you know, I've met a few new people through Facebook ("I'm friends with one of your friends, want to go out some time?") sort of thing. I have it open most times but I don't post a new status every bloody two minutes. Use it in moderation and it's more like a tool. [editline]7th April 2011[/editline] It's also a lot more convenient to talk to people on Facebook rather than phoning them up, or going round to their houses on short notice.
I think facebook even helps your social life. I got back in contact with a few people because of talking on facebook. It's also very handy for meeting up with people, by making events and being invited trough facebook by people who don't have your number, and just get to know more about people. I do hate the people who make new statuses 3 times a day just to make sure everybody knows what they are doing :| Like that 'places' app. I DON'T CARE THAT YOU JUST CAME HOME /caps
I agree with a little bit of what the OP says and a little bit of what the posters say. The mentality people have on facebook certainly isn't healthy, but at the same time they will probably grow out of it. I honestly have never seen what's so great about facebook, it's just myspace but with more chat features.
I like facebook mostly because many of the people I have as a friend, are people I don't really talk to anymore, because of whatever reason. I don't even know where I can see how many friends I have exactly. I just visit the page where I see what people have posted and occasionally visit profiles. I don't understand why people don't like Facebook. Just because some people go full retard on it by changing their profile pic a hundred times for example, doesn't say much. Some people are just plain annoying and I have had lots of family members who posted loads of shit no one cares about and I just finish it by unfriending them. And suddenly you don't have to bear with idiots on Facebook anymore.

It's not like they should stop doing something that they like just because you don't think it makes sense.
After using Facebook for so long I just noticed my last name is spelled wrong. Also my profile pic http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=499203&id=570265424&l=0831b1412c (it's the first one) those and a couple photos of a dude I met from a TV show are the only photos I've uploaded. There are hundreds of photos of me on this fucking site, my friends don't even ask permission and it'd offend them if I asked them to remove them. My girlfriend has a fucking video camera now and fucking turns it on when we're all drunk and uploads the videos without asking permission. It's a good thing the privacy settings allow me to not be discovered by searching because I'd never get a job with them watching a video of me being completely fucked up. You know what? Next time I go to a party with my girlfriend I'm taking her fucking camera battery. There isn't anything more offensive then someone taking pictures and video of you when you're drunk and posting them for all to see.

Facebook IS used to see other people their status, it's not like u know how stupid it is before u read it :| Some people put the most stupid stuff on it. It's a stupid argument in ANY subject actually.

If you don't like reading someone's statuses, delete them. God damn, is it really that hard? People that bitch about how other people are on facebook are ridiculous. Nobody is forcing you to be friends with them.
"Oh my god idiots are being stupid the entire next generation is dead"
"Oh my god idiots are being stupid the entire next generation is dead"
lol isn't this the 30th time you've posted in this thread disclosing your displeasure with it?
Facebook is useless anyway. My news feed is spammed with a mixture of the following. - Indirect status'. E.g: 'your such a dick!!!1' then they don't tell anyone who they mean. - People who relentlessly like endless amounts of shit pages. E.g: 'A girl got ovary cancer and the boy said k bye babes loveyou and then she woke up and she was fine and then she saw the boy in a coffin in his house.' wtf - A new fortune cookie has arrived you sad fucker. Also the developers put off fixing big issues' like the chat being shit, and instead add useless features like seeing what some randomer's status was 6 months ago.
I don't really like facebook, I agree it's full of unwarranted self importance and attention whoring and has made us all boring people but I just can't seem to escape it. My friends nearly always organise stuff over facebook through the events system and I would find myself socially dead without it.

No, some people are just obsessive and moronic. Facebook just brings that to light. If you honestly think facebook will have a lasting effect on the majority of it's users then i'd have to conclude that you're wrong.
I Like You, Man, But Talking Like This On Your Title Really Stopped Me From Reading The Article.
So writing a title in proper format turned you off?
So you're saying you'll read somebody's status, then decide it's stupid and get mad because you read it?
No i'm saying the argument: don't read it if u don't like it, is stupid, u can't know that it's stupid when u don't read it...i don't care about stupid statusses, why get mad about it?
