Because they have a powerful military.

They do have the capability of nuclear weapons.
my best friend when i was around 6 was north korean
i used to go to his house and play jak and daxter and eat crazy korean food
i don't know any details about how he got here, his parents never talked about it, understandably so
i was young, so i didn't really think about it that much
i moved away, i haven't seen him since

They have a small number of shitty nuclear weapons.
Their military is amusing. Despite it being so large and prepared for war their country is absolutely incapable of lasting a longer war once the already weak economy fails there.
Atlanta, huh? About 30 minutes away from where I am, gimme his name and I bet I could hook him back up with ya.

An idiot ignorant enough to waive the importance of any form of nuclear weaponry in malicious hands doesn't deserve to express their thoughts on the matter.
when you first said korean friend I was thinking you were going to learn that he was actually a pro starcraft player or something
Shame on you, OP. Shame on you. :colbert:

You were definitely a really sucky friend...

Nuclear weapons are deadly, but North Korea doesn't have the power to last in a protracted war.
The reason for dogs being a part of Korean cuisine is the famine going in in NK.

So is Australia but do you seen me invading that place?
North Korea is a prison island. Why aren't we doing something about that?
well excuse him for not reading his mind like you would
Reminds me of that Simpsons quote.
Host of Promiscuous Idiot's Island: Now, ladies, when you agreed to do this show, you were told you would be living with a millionaire on his private island. Well, I'm afraid we've misled you. (the women gasp)
Host: This isn't an island at all. It's a peninsula!
North Korea:
Where no(one)thing works
So, you kept making jokes about him, at his expense, even though you clearly could tell he did not enjoy the jokes and never even cracked a smile? And yet you were his friend?
That's really dickish.
It should have been pretty obvious to NOT make Korean jokes around, you know, a Korean.
You know, if the North Korean Gov. see this, they are going to be more mean to the citizens...
Just like what happen in USA with slavery
Here's a North Korean website. I think it will be relevant.

He lives in Atlanta, you know what county? I live in Atlanta, and I have a friend with relatives that escaped from North Korea.
Small world, unless of course these are two completely different people.
I can understand why he didn't laugh, but I don't think the Korean guy was that hurt by the jokes, because he never left your circle of friends. We New Zealanders love to dis people's countries when they visit, no one takes offense. Jokes will always be just that: jokes.
Try not to feel too bad about hit, he probably was glad he was out of the country in the first place. Taking the odd joke on your country sounds a LOT better than living there.

Tell him to play Crysis.
you shouldn't have made the jokes in the first place tbh.
