Well what power limits do you want on your character? I'd argue that the more powerful a character gets, the more focus you'd get on his/her personal stuff but I digress.
Fights local crime I guess? Nothing too crazy.
Ah alright, so street level. Well you could check out Venom: Lethal Protector, Daredevil, Batman, Punisher or Watchmen.

The Spawn animated series didn't get too crazy either. Plus you have Keith David as the main character. I think they're all up on youtube.

What about Nightwing?
I like different comics- most of my favorites are on DC rather than Marvel. Series I've liked (though may not be reading at the moment) include Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Deadpool, X-Men, and 2000AD. My first comic was Watchmen and V for Vendetta given to me by a friend maybe four years ago, so I'm still trying to work my way through.
Usagi Yojimbo, motherfuckers.

I've a pretty large collection of Sakai's work in the depths of my cupboard, Usagi being my favorite of the lot. Any of you guys into the series?
I've never really been in a position to buy any comics, but I've recently gained an interest in the cartoons. Gotta say, I've been enjoying the Justice League ones a ton, going to move onto the older Batman animated series afterwards, then maybe if I can find a way of reading some of the comics online then I'll do it. Money is certainly an issue, though, when each issue digitally seems to cost about $2 from some sites.
Am I in some minority for having the Martian Manhunter and Flash as some of my favourite characters? They just seem to be the most relatable, for the lack of a better word.

If you like the cartoons check out Young Justice on Cartoon Network. It's actually very good!
Batman The Brave and the Bold too.

On the Marvel side, try out Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Spectacular Spider-Man, two amazing shows that were unjustly cut down during their prime.
What about Nightwing?
Yeah anyone from the batman family is fine.
Is there a superhero that isn't terribly powerful whose stories are mostly personal? I had started reading Spider-man but the story got really weird lately and I want something else. (Not that he's weak but he filled the niche)
Sam & Twitch. No powers, just two cops, brain and brawn. A spinoff of the Spawn series
I fucking love X-men. Storm ftw.

I wish I were interested in much Marvel content, for some reason I'm more drawn to the DC universe. Then again, the Avengers might catch my interest.
I quite like the series with an abundance of characters, which is why I'm having some teething issues with the relatively small cast of the Batman laminated queries, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. The cartoon film noir aesthetic in the show more than makes up for the lack of characters, it's so unique and very much pleasing.

I think the new Avengers show they're doing is actually a sequel show to Earth's Mightiest Heroes, just with the movie cast only.
Like, as in, it might be in the same fictional universe.
Its being made by the same people btw.
Green lanter, batman and superman fan here. Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan are my favourite green lanterns.
Pfft, y'all can't beat my vintage Beano collection
Yeah anyone from the batman family is fine.
Where would I start for Nightwing? First issue of New 52?
Cable and Deadpool has to be the best comic series so far even though it is a little out dated (Written before Waypool)
Where would I start for Nightwing? First issue of New 52?
Yeah that's a good place to start. The New 52 is pretty good and the batman family stories are good so far. If you have the time and the extra cash, check out the batman series too which had Grant Morrison as the writer.

Did a slight update to the OP. Also, I found the Spawn animated series on youtube. Check them out if you're bored and/or have the time. It's great.

Just picked up Nightwing 0-2 through DC's digital comics. If I like them I'll probably pick up some hard copies. :)
New 52 Batwoman is good too. Check it out!

How are you liking Lodbell's run on Superman lately?

I'm planning to add a recommended reading section. If there's a comic book you want other people to read, please post away.

King city, if you don't normally like comics, this will rock your boat.
It's about a 'cat master' lockpick expert making a return to his old city alongside his godly swiss-army knife of a cat, on a routine job he catches scent of something bad going down and it goes on from there.
it's got a gorgeous artstyle and sense of humor, and the story is decent too. There is no parallel to Brandon Grahams creativity.
here's a panel of a dangerous goon being sliced to bits by a well thrown cat, if this doesn't make you read it i don't know what will...

~i never read mainstream comics~
Bought Superman Action Comics Vol.1 and Batgirl (New 52) Vol.1 on Friday as my first physical comic book thingies I own because they didn't have All-Star Superman (but I ordered it). Only read the first issue of the Superman one, I need to adjust to sequential art, easpcially in print and not digital...
I'm slowly reading through Neil Gaiman's The Sandman at the moment. It is good but a bit weird.

Yeah, well I know it was pretty confusing to me when I read comic books for the first time. I just couldn't absorb the story/dialogue/characters and the art at the same time. So most of the time, I understood the story and stuff but I didn't notice the quality of the art and I burned through the books faster than I should have. However now, I got myself a little method of reading. First, I read what the words say and then glance at what the pictures look like and when I read everything on that page, I focus on the pictures and then glance at the words say. I think it works rather well for me, especially for when I read comic books in print. Also Grant Morrison's run on Action Comics is pretty great IMO. He put in a lot of stuff reminiscent of the Golden Age Supes which I'm happy about it. Good on you for ordering All-Star Superman, it's one of the modern classics.

Neil Gaiman can work wonders in the comic book industry if he really wanted to. He just 'gets' characters that I like and respects them a whole lot. The Sandman is great and I think one of Facepunch's posters here, I think it's Guy Mannly, has the avatar pic of 'Dream'. If anybody likes Superman, you should check out what Neil Gaiman had to say about him.

I think I might bring up a recommended reading stuff for Superman. If anyone has a favorite superhero, please recommend the best stuff you've read about them.
