I've always thought of Optimus Prime as more of a power fantasy than like Buff McLargehuge. And there are plenty of male characters in games that were designed for sex appeal, like the Prince of Persia or Nathan Drake.

Being at university I see a lot of men and women who play video games and they all like the same characters. Boring generic fuckheads like Marcus Fenix don't actually appeal to anyone who's over 15 because they're shit characters. Beefy guys like Batman appeal to everyone even if they're technically a power fantasy because they're well written characters.

If your design is shit then people won't like it, if your design is good then people will like it. There's none of that designed for men/designed for women thing going on in the video game industry, you either write and design a good character or you don't.

Game of Thrones isn't erotic literature (it's mature and got a lot of sex but it's not erotica), and the TV show isn't pornographic either (again, lots of nudity and sex, but it's not pornography) and it still has Jon Snow, a character who's overwhelmingly popular among female readers (more so for the show than the book, because the actor is hot as balls).
