His binary analysis is also something I don't like and something he has displayed quite often when it comes to the topic of game economics. There are only two types of people after a mediocre game is released: People who feel burned buying it, and people who are literally insane schills that hate other consumers. Could it not be possible that a third party exists, one that sees the problems with the game but can either look past them and enjoy it for what it is, or are hopeful of future developments? Also his quip at the end, "Will you be part of that solution or will you continue to be part of the problem". What problem am I a part of? Should I just not pre-order games anymore? Should I have the prescience not to pre-order "bad games"? What scale should I use, yours, or mine? Or Metacritics?
As I said above there is a lot to criticize about the increasingly cynical cashgrab techniques publishers are doing to try and beat the reviews and first impressions, but I don't really understand what his objective of the video was other than to tell us that.
I think the point is just to not pre-order games because it's virtually pointless when you could just as easily wait until the first days of release to see if it sucks.
I've never done it myself because I agree with that. Especially digitally, you don't benefit in any way from it other than seeing grayed-out text on your Steam library.
And besides pre-order benefits being stupid, they're not even exclusive 99% of the time anyways. Developers always release pre-order bonuses as crappy paid DLC later.
The preorder trend at its extreme limits would allow developers to simply bathe in money for good marketing, and then not even release a game in the end.
The only game i pre ordered was 'The Ship'.
What the fuck was going through my mind and how come i have never pre ordered anything apart from it?
I slightly disagree with T.H. because right now I'm in a situation that differs from what he is talking about.
He stresses about the pre-order bonuses of several games not being that great; perhaps he only mentioned the ones that absolutely sucked and/or recent releases. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a game that has yet to have any reviews and it comes out in April (the game isn't even done yet; hell, not even all the characters have been announced), yet I still pre-ordered. My friend works part time at EB games so she gets a small discount and therefore she put my pre-order under her name for me.
It comes with a fightstick and this PDP stick probably goes for the same price as the entire bundle itself. So it was an amazing deal. (Google up fightsticks with good parts such as Sawna/Seimitsu parts. They are expensive). If I were to decide to buy the stick seperate from the game it would be the equivalent of the Street Fighter IV problem where the pre-order was only around $120 (it included the $59.99 game + fightstick). But the stick went for ~$200 if you were to buy it separate (I am referring to the Madcatz TE stick from 2009). The same situation can happen here with Injustice; so if someone were to claim that this pre-order bonus was a waste of money but still wanted to get a fight stick of their own eventually (perhaps sometime afterwards), they are missing out.
I love to pre-order games. It's nice to put money on something earlier and then when it releases you have new money to put on another game.
I pretty much pre-order every AAA title from Steam as soon as they come available. It's weird but I always look forward to buying games from Steam, even if I can't play them directly.
Oh my god, you're the manifestation of all awful consumer buying habits.

pls stop for the good of everyone okay?
I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of Spore. I don't think I need to go into how bad of an idea that was.
I pre ordered borderlands 2, but heck, it came with a new class, an artbook, a map and a bobblehead statue, and I'm a real sucker for bobbleheads.
I disagree with him when it comes to the fans part. Some people think certain games suck, but there are people who genuinly enjoy them, even though the common-opinion is that it sucks. I am a sucker for Warz, even though I know next to all people keep saying that it sucks. It is possible to like a game that is generally regarded as shitty, without "Going into stockholm syndrome".
Only pre-ordered 4 games in my entire life; L4D, L4D2, Portal 2, and The Last of Us.
It usually takes a LOT of excitement and looking forward to for me to actually pre-order a game.
Every time I hear this dude's voice I get a little pissed off
Last game I pre-ordered was Serious Sam 3. And that was a good game.
Welp, no more pre-ordering for me.
The only game I ever pre-ordered was Halo 3: ODST for some weird reason. I think you got a map pack in Halo 3 and a Sargent Johnson character or something.
I was like 12 or something though. To be fair I did actually enjoy it, not many other people did though.
I usually never preorder games, only when I either know that the game is good from foreign reviews (Demon's Souls), or if I know that the developer usually doesn't disappoint (Valve).
The only game that I come close to regretting for preordering would be Diablo III. It wasn't a bad game of course, it just didn't live up to the expectations I set for it.
Gameplay trailers mean jackshit.
Only games I've pre-ordered were ones that interested me and came with cool pre-order bonuses, and I don't regret a single one.
games i've pre-ordered
-sleeping dogs
-quantum conundrum
-hitman: absolution
-(soon) bioshock: infinite
Most recent games I've pre-ordered were Portal 2 (PS3) and Skyrim. I didn't end up getting whatever Portal's bonus was but I honestly didn't care since it's not why I pre-ordered the game anyway.
I have only preordered one game ever - Spore.
After that, I vowed to never do so again.
I preordered SW:TOR. I regretted it.
After SWTOR and being completely fucked in the ass with NFS World i'm not buying another MMO from EA for a while.
Valve should have a system on Steam where you have to redeem a pre-order, rather than it just automatically unlocking when the game is released. That would solve the problem, you can get the bonuses but wait until you know the game is good.
Doubt publishers would like that. Defeats the point on their end.
i preordered skyrim and it was one of the best purchases ive made in terms of vidya games
[editline]14th February 2013[/editline]
i guess as a rule noone should ever preorder an fps
they usually turn out sub par if they are overhyped so its not worth it

This is the worst thing I've ever seen.
Valve even made fun of it in one of their trailers for it.
All the games I pre-ordered were (objectively) good.
I pre-ordered the Orange Box because I wanted the TF2 beta and it was the biggest waste. As it turns out a really terrible Dell can't run games. Only got to be able to run it in 09.
Either way, pre-ordered CS:GO, From Dust, and FarCry 3. All pretty good, with flaws.
Should I have pre-ordered? Fuck no! I got access to a beta missing half of it's content (and still is), a game I wouldn't have gotten if I wasn't wanting to spend cash, and there was a sale for FarCry 3 for like 20 bucks a few days ago.
I pre-ordered Sonic Unleashed. :v:
Ok ok i know i said no more preordering for me but Gamestop convinced me to preorder Wind Waker HD. I mean cmon Nintendo usually has good preorder bonuses.
I only pre-order games from series' I enjoy, since they're usually limited/collectors editions and I just like having a guaranteed copy waiting for me. I hardly care about whatever bonus shit they tack to the pre-order. I've never pre-ordered a game that's a new IP. Hell every time I go to get a new game I didn't pre-order from the store, they usually have the pre-order incentives in them. This happened with RAGE, a week or two after the game came out, I just waltzed into Wal-Mart's electronic section, picked the game up, and when I opened it at home it had all the dumb little pre-order incentives in it.
Valve even made fun of it in one of their trailers for it.
Which one? I know I saw it in peer review, but I didn't see it in any trailers.
The only game I'll ever preorder is Arma 3.
I've pre-ordered BF3, RO2 and Arma 2.
At least for BF3 and RO2, I got my money's worth and more. Still playing BF3 or RO2 and enjoying it.
Arma 2, I have put more hours into than any other game and I will pre-order Arma 3 as well.
