Here's some additional images I found. Looks like the giant worm is still your prize. Nidhogg is a personal favorite of mine. Seems like they're going for an intentionally ugly aesthetic to one up the minimalist surrealism thing they had going on previously. If the gameplay is just as tight as the previous title I'm willing to overlook it.
Wait, so is that janky looking stomp suppose to replace the neck snap? That doesn't nearly as smooth and quick as the snap. Actually, all of the animations look worse than first game.
I thought the neck snap was someone tearing off the opponents head or heart? Or that's how I got out of it anyway. What's with the homer screams? Not only do they look like Homer Simpson running around with no junk they also scream like him too. Hope Fox doesn't find out about this game.
I think the only thing actually wrong with it is the characters. They don't fit the tone that I had imagined for the abstract characters in the original. I always imagined the swordfights being like those in The Princess Bride - full of flourish and drama, unrealistic but in a playful way, with death often being a dark punchline to a joke. Maybe that's just because of how my friends and I always taunted each other during matches, but that's how I felt the game was, and this completely doesn't match those expectations. This has none of the pride that I imagined - you can't imagine a character like that spouting off quips or trading insults while Errol Flynning it up. I'm questioning whether getting rid of the bright skin colors would help. It worked fine in the original because everything was so abstract. Here, they seem to make the characters cartoons in a non-cartoonish world. It clearly makes the game screen more readable, but that's not the only thing that matters. I also think the animations are pretty poorly done, in a technical sense, but the game's still deep in development so I expect that to get better. Other than that, the art seems fine - the level looks spot-on, the weapons look good.
I'm not a fan of rotated pixel art, but if they want to keep the look, they could make the players a bit less goofy, less detailed bodies/less goofy faces would work just fine, like if they gave them helmets or something. Also, neck snap > stomp.
This was...not an art direction I was expecting them to take.

I mean, thinking about it, it's probably their way of avoiding this being like an excessively messy and controversial game or something. Goofy-looking naked cartoon dudes goring eachother violently and excessively is perfectly fine if it's not red blood and excessive detail, after all, given the graphics boost the game's gotten. But the faces, portly bellies and the fact that their nipples were drawn just makes them look like naked Homers running around murdering eachother and screaming.
finally i can play the game i always wanted bert is sick of ernie's shit and curbstomps him in a feverish rage
if the first game didn't spark a shit storm why would doing something similar in the second?
Because abstract colored dudes that are like 12 pixels high, of randomly colored blood When you've got higher res graphics but still want to keep the quirky black comedy element i can see why someone would go this route, but they went too ugly-whacky for its own good
nobody cares about gore in video games anymore
Okay, controversial may not of been the way to put it, but rather 'unfitting', since it'd be a lot bleaker if everyone was spewing red blood everywhere when they got impaled or their face stomped in

gross I liked the simple but weird aesthetics the first game had going. I dont even know what this is
jesus, i hope they at least keep the music as good as it was
n1 reminded me of an atari game n2 is reminding me of an early 90s adventure game
the art looks very noisy compared to the first one, which is a poor choice for games like this because you're supposed to be focusing on your enemy, the backdrops stand out more than they should
jesus, i hope they at least keep the music as good as it was
I've played a huge amount of the first game (partly to get all the achievements) and I honestly love the surrealist art design and music
It looks like they've tried to build on the original's humour but lost what makes it special. Part of Nidhogg's appeal is that the characters feel like actual people and it's easy to imagine them that way. The violent slapstick and yelling is so much funnier than two cartoon apes stomping each other with excessive pixel blood.
That being said I wonder how they're going to respond to everyone calling the characters shit.
Does not seem to care
arghh!! change!!
arghh!! change!!
change for the worst imo, in style at least. and like, i still wouldn't like it if there was no nidhogg 1, the dumb cartoony bert & ernie doesn't mesh well with the surreal tone and makes the realistic screams and grunts of pain sound awkward more that anything else.
Someone on reddit drew their own concept art for the characters

There's something about upstanding, dignified fencers facing each other down in savagery over the HONOR OF THE NIDHOGG that really gets me giggling.
This guy explained my feelings better than I ever could.
arghh!! change!!
There's change and then there's throwing out the entire look and surreal theme of the first game. It's like if Dishonored 2 went for a goofy over-the-top claymation look, and telling everyone that doesn't like it that they're just "AFRAID OF CHANGE!!! :'CC"
the new characters look terrible both in terms of art style and animation
kind of ironic that this was in the video suggestions i got:
I was thinking at first that it was perhaps suggesting that you could mod the style of the game. But it doesn't seem like it. It looks so BAD.
this game looks like the most original game for years!
There's change and then there's throwing out the entire look and surreal theme of the first game. It's like if Dishonored 2 went for a goofy over-the-top claymation look, and telling everyone that doesn't like it that they're just "AFRAID OF CHANGE!!! :'CC"
oh ok so you know what's better for the dev's work than they do themselves? this isn't comparative to Dishonored. Dishonored is heavily stylized and has direction. Nidhogg 1 is basically "ok that looks like a worm, ok that looks like a cloud, ok that looks enough like dirt". idk, if you played nidhogg just to look at the quickly-drawn art design then we play games for different reasons.
Only reason to be so pissy about this game is "wah different character models". Who cares?
Plenty of people in this thread, apparently. Original Nidhoog has a great aesthetic. This new game looks like a hot mess.
