I wanted to say Watusi but the source didn’t name it
"Let's conquer the virgin blue!" V. Gorlenko, 1964
This was part of an effort to change farming tactics to better feed the Soviet people. The strategies included using experimental science to cultivate better soil and, as seen here, breeding more ducks to get cheap meat.

"Smoke Cigarettes," Rosanov, S. Sakharov, 1950
The most notable thing about this poster is that it encourages people to smoke cigarettes, but isn't promoting a particular brand.
This is because all of the factories were being controlled by the Communist Party, so it didn't matter where people were buying their goods, they just needed to buy more of them.

"Tobacco is a poison. Quit smoking!" Ignat'ev N., 1957
This anti-smoking poster claimed that it only takes four cigarettes to kill a rabbit and 100 to kill a horse.
Even in the 1950s, the campaign took on a meme-ish quality. People all over the country made spoofs of the ad with slogans like "a drop of nicotine blows a hamster up to infinity."

“Glory to the explorers of space”, A. Leonov & A. Sokolov, 1971
This poster expresses the obsession with space travel and highlights how the Soviet system of socialism and the nation’s technological superiority would pave the way for public space exploration.

In the USSR, in the USA, Unknown Artist, 1950s
This poster presents a view of the differences between education in the USSR and education (or lack thereof) in America.
speaking of cows, two german brothers who were both zoologists back in the 1920's and 30's attempted to revive an extinct species of cow, the auroch, which was a large as fuck cow
[t]https://barkingmadness.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/136-rolandi-tauromaquia-auroch.jpg[/t]
was hunted into extinction because it was a highly desired hunting target due to their size and power. that and destruction of their forests for farming, and diseases transferred from domestic cattle. their attempts weren't successful but we now have the heck cattle (named after the brother's surname, heck):
[t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/45/Abbildz%C3%BCchtung_des_Auerochsen_Wildpark_Rheing%C3%B6nheim.JPG/1280px-Abbildz%C3%BCchtung_des_Auerochsen_Wildpark_Rheing%C3%B6nheim.JPG[/t]
however the genes of the auroch still exist today in modern european cattle and scientists hope to one day revive the species. the nazis took interest in their work, they wanted to revive the extinct species from german folklore so that they could hunt them as seen in this picture below of some nazis looking at a model of the bialowieza forest with pieces representing the animals they hoped to one day revive and then kill again.
URAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
propoganda is always fascinating. Especially Soviet propoganda.
Imagine living in some god forsaken state housing in Minsk, and the state tells you it's going to space. If you felt generous enough to believe it, it must've seemed pretty far removed from anything to do with you in a pretty cynical way.
It's a bit complicated.
1) People had plenty of reasons to be cynical, but space wasn't one of them.
People were super excited about space and felt proud by proxy, I mean we had SpaceX recently, so it's not hard to imagine.
The point wasn't that one would be cynical about space, the point is that one would be cynical about the fact that the soviet goverment decided that (to the regular person on the street) some far off vision of the future was a more immediate priority than the wellbeing of it's comrades on the factory floor. And that the state which killed tens of millions of it's own people through the starvation in the Ukraine, liquidation of the kulaks, Yehzov's reign of terror and the genocidal all consuming monster of the gulag still had the tumerity to cast itself as the brave conqueror of new frontiers, and the crusading force, and hero of the proletariat while the common man still suffered greatly.
2) Russians are very competitive, so, in the mind of an average Ivan, if Soviet Union beats West in space, that beats shoddy housings.
Maybe that's why the soviet union got away with what it did for so long.
3) You're projecting yourself, with all of your acquired values and standards into that situation. People of that era didn't have any idea whatsoever about western standards of living until like 80s, so you have to imagine yourself seeing god forsaken state housing as a plain regular housing everybody else have, so you wouldn't be too resentful about it.
I could still see goverment buildings, moscow underground, and lavish appointment of party officials, with their own private cars and well appointed clothes, and compare it to my tiny gray box of an apartment in a tiny gray box of public housing, in a sea of desolate gray boxes in even Moscow's suburbs, let alone some industrial town or satellite state.
[T]https://cdn.rbth.com/all/2017/07/04/001-shutterstock_365092382.jpg[/T] [T]http://russiantumble.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Soviet-Apartment-Buildings.jpg[/T]
I don't have to know about the standard of living in the west to be able to see that the government and all public faces of the state are well appointed and glamorous, and the dwellings of the proletariat are anything but. And that's before we get to the food shortages and other such products of a controlled economy, the tryanical weight of distrust of the state and every other individual one must bear, knowing that anywhere up to 1 in 3 people is a goverment informant (east germany in particular), gleefully listening in to every word, looking for the slightest crack in anything you say so they can rush off to the commissar to dennounce you, and the woeful inequality between the common working man and the communist theocrats in the state. Everything i've read about the soviet union, be it from the first days under the leninists to the last days of the union under Gorbachev, almost solely makes the point that everyone knew something was wrong, but wouldn't dare say it, even if they could articulate it.
The moscow underground is seriously beautiful by the way. Holy hell it's gorgeous.

New Mexico has a rad flag
I hate my state flag (New Jersey) but hey, at least we went with ugly tan/yellow instead of the standard navy blue so many states have :v:

Instantly thought of this, which is paradoxically blue
Texas has the best looking state flag because it started as a national flag, so it's not just a boring seal on blue.
Elektro is the nickname of a robot built by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in its Mansfield, Ohio facility between 1937 and 1938. Seven feet tall (2.1 m), weighing 265 pounds (120.2 kg), humanoid in appearance, he could walk by voice command, speak about 700 words (using a 78-rpm record player), smoke cigarettes, blow up balloons, and move his head and arms. Elektro's body consisted of a steel gear, cam and motor skeleton covered by an aluminum skin. His photoelectric "eyes" could distinguish red and green light. He was on exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair and reappeared at that fair in 1940, with "Sparko", a robot dog that could bark, sit, and beg to humans.
I like Nagasaki’s city flag
[T]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a4/Flag_of_Nagasaki_City.png[/T]
The pins the city officials all wear are of the star and I really wanted to get one, despite looking like a pentagram to a layman, I would at least know where it comes from and what it represents.
Is it just me or some of them looks like airline logo. :v:
