Over 1,000 protestors march along a highway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to mourn the killing of Rio City Counselor Marielle Franco.
An outspoken advocate for rights for the city's favela residents and against police violence and corruption, Franco was shot dead on March 14th along with her driver as she was returning home from a discussion. Investigations are ongoing, but it is almost certain she was assassinated for her political activity.

MONUSCO peacekeepers of the North Kivu brigade on patrol in a street of Goma pass a group of teenagers returning from a football game.
So this is what engineers of the Southern Railroad(SOU) wore when they went through narrow tunnels of the Cincinnati, New Orleans, and Texas Pacific Railway which earned it the nickname "The Rathole" so they wouldn't inhale the smoke of steam locomotive and was also why that route was the first to be dieselized in the Southern System. Engineers on the Southern pacific wore similar masks before the introduction of the cab forwards.

The last M3 Lee built at the Chrysler Defense Plant is about to leave the production line as lines of Sherman tanks are also being prepared. I'm guessing either late 1942 or early or mid 1943.
And it's because of this that SP commissioned Baldwin to build their fleet of cab forward 4-8-8-2's

The story goes that a few drivers got fed up with the smoke and other bullshit, and got the turntable guys to turn the engine in reverse, and simply ran the mainline running backwards, tender first.
This worked well enough, but pushing a tender for any amount of time is playing with fire, especially on that kind of road for entire runs. So the SP simply took the design for their current 4-8-8-2's, sent them to baldwin and said "make it an oil burning cab forward" and ordered about 25 on the spot, without even bothering for a prototype like you'd usually do. And it was a fantastic success, spawning a series of 3 or 4 designs which lasted for a few decades.

There is a bit of a tragic part of the story though. Since over the "rear" truck of the engine, there was a large platform for servicing the compressors, shoveling out the smokebox, pulling superheater tubes etc. And the hobos quite frequently found these as self evidently a great place to hop up on and ride the rails to wherever they intended to go. Just throw your sack up, catch the ladder, and put your feet up.
However, this worked all well and good until you got to the tunnels. Since the stack was just next to the platform, as soon as you hit the enclosed space, that large platform became a low pressure zone where the smoke and steam would turbulently swirl around on, and get "stuck" there. And it wasn't an infrequent occurence at the end of a run to find a hobo on the service platform, dead from asphyxiation, scalding from the steam, or more usually, both.

This is the Napier-Campbell Blue Bird - one version of it, at least. It's a British land speed record car, which they took through many iterations, but this one is by far my favorite. It captures the dieselpunk aesthetic so well, it doesn't even look real
God i love that era so much.

"Sword: gold, lapis lazuli, mechanically-watered steel. Scabbard: wood, mother-of-pearl framed in gold."
