Oise-Aisne American Cemetery near Fère-en-Tardenois, France is the final resting place of over 6,000 Americans who died fighting in the region during World War I. Officially, the cemetery has four burial plots: Plots A-D. However, there is a fifth burial plot that officially does not exist: Plot E. Hidden from view and only accessible via the superintendent's office, Plot E is the resting place of the "dishonored dead" - over 90 American soldiers who served in World War II and were convicted of murder and/or rape after the war, dishonorably discharged, and then executed. Buried with their backs to the main cemetery, the graves in this section of the cemetery are marked only by a number and until a list was made public in 2009 it was impossible to identify individual graves. Additionally, no American flags are permitted to fly over Plot E. Notable burials at the cemetery include Eddie Slovik (until 1987 when he was returned to the US), who was executed for desertion rather than rape and murder, and Louis Till, the father of Emmet Till whose murder in 1955 was the catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement.
I'll never understand how desertion, especially after being drafted, literally forced into battle, was considered a crime worthy of the death sentence.
I'll never understand how desertion, especially after being drafted, literally forced into battle, was considered a crime worthy of the death sentence.
To encourage everybody else who was forced into battle to decide that they were more likely to survive the enemy trying to kill them than their own side trying to kill them. [editline]1st November 2016[/editline] You can fight and probably die, or not fight and definitely die.
I'll never understand how desertion, especially after being drafted, literally forced into battle, was considered a crime worthy of the death sentence.
You'd have a lot more deserters if it wasn't. And you need those bodies for cannon fodder.
I'll never understand how desertion, especially after being drafted, literally forced into battle, was considered a crime worthy of the death sentence.
iirc Slovik was the only American soldier actually executed for desertion in WWII. Since desertion was a growing problem in the later years of the war the decision was made to execute him as an example to any other potential deserters. 48 other death sentences were handed out to other soldiers for desertion, but none of the others were carried out.
I'll never understand how desertion, especially after being drafted, literally forced into battle, was considered a crime worthy of the death sentence.
Because if you didn't more people would desert your armies. If it wasn't for the fact that it was punished by death, larger parts of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War would have deserted in places like Valley Forge. Plus desertion isn't really good for the morale of those who stay as well because it means there's less guys to watch their backs and ETC,
this 17th century painting shows us what natural watermelon looked like in 1672. Modern watermelon is the work of selective breeding.

Anyone know where to find more pictures of really old halloween costumes? Searching doesn't really turn up anything relevant
nope, it has black seeds so it is ripe
Edit: after some googling people are saying it's just an ordinary watermelon that didn't have enough water when growing
Wasn't this some sorta bullshit and this is just an unripe watermelon?
I don't think so, bananas had seeds until we bred versions with no seeds. Modern commercal bananas are all clones of each other since they can't spread via seeds anymore. The ones we eat now are Cavendish bananas because the previously used Gros Michel bananas were almost wiped out by Panama disease.
And now if I remember correctly there's ANOTHER epidemic threatening to wipe out this version which would make us move to a less popular version. Which of course is what the current version already is, as the bananas originally used were a stronger flavor.

I guess I'm lucky I'm not a fan of bananas.
Apparently, those banana flavored Runts and other artificial banana flavors are actually very close to the flavor of the Gros Michel banana.
I've always wondered why ostensibly banana-flavored things taste nothing like any banana I've ever eaten. [editline]2nd November 2016[/editline] Okay not ALWAYS wondered, but I've pondered it from time to time.

[editline]2nd November 2016[/editline] Okay not ALWAYS wondered, but I've pondered it from time to time.
There's an easily-synthesized artificial banana flavor chemical, isoamyl acetate, which gets used in all those cheap banana-flavored-but-no-actual-bananas foods. I had to do a reaction of it in high school chemistry class, it's just acetic acid (the acid in vinegar), isoamyl alcohol, and a pinch of sulfuric acid, all of which are dirt cheap. Real bananas do have that compound, but they also have thousands of others, and it's only a minor part of the flavor. But doing all that is more work than they have to do, so why bother?

Coachella has more feathers than we do now. Hauppauge, Shinnecock Inlet, Manhasset (rich af), Patchogue (now a white meth town), Setauket, Sagaponack, Amagansett (East Hampton but even richer), Montauk (white people staycation destination), Massepequa, Wyandanch (Long Island's Compton).
