Nah that's a standard german state engine with a Franco-Crosti boiler. Fairly common in the 40's and 50's

BR tried it on some 9fs too. Basic idea was that the boiler does a 180 to another smaller boiler underneath for some free heating space for the same volume. Basically acting as a really big feedwater heater. It worked but the extra efficiency wasn't worth the cost of construction, maintenance, complexity or weight. Since you also needed some sort of a valve to drive exhaust steam either up the blast pipe or up the rear chimney for draft. Plus it vented right in front of the cab so if you were running with the exhuaust out the rear you couldn't see shit.
Some people say they looked extremely ugly. I kinda like it. Very bulky and utilitarian look to them all.

Only two films I recognize are Good, Bad, & Ugly and Mr. Nobody (both are great films, though the latter is kind of wacky)
[editline]13th January 2017[/editline]
Are they all films from their respective countries?

An interesting article on the evolution of Antarctic research base designs. Really interesting, I didn't know most of these existed let alone how cool they looked.

What has always bothered me about antarctic bases is that none of them are permanent structures. You're literally not allowed to build permanent structures there because it apparently means you are somehow trying to claim the land on behalf of another country or something, so even in locations where ice jacking is needed the buildings are designed to be dismantled which means extra effort in designing them instead of a proper foundation and structure above or tunneling or even major infrastructure.
I imagine bases on mars or the moon might look something like these.

Given their long history with Mongolia, I suppose they're lucky to have no disputes with them.

China is heavily invested in Mongolia's economy and infrastructure I believe.

I also imagine that Russia would get kind of pissed if China started trying to take land from Mongolia.

Why was such a large aircraft on an unpaved airstrip?
Cause Russian aircraft.
Why was such a large aircraft on an unpaved airstrip?
Because all Russian vehicles refuse to work on asphalt.
Why was such a large aircraft on an unpaved airstrip?
IIRC the jet was designed to land on short unpaved runways so that it can deliver cargo to rural or undeveloped regions. The C-130 and IL-76 had the same philosophy behind them, though they were more for military deployment than cargo.

Interestingly it actually opened in the January of 1990, so pretty much two years before the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
