surely a helmet like this would just funnel swords directly into your eyeballs?
I feel like it might be a helmet to deter arrows, not swords. Since the eyes got overhangs.

Maybe it's just decoration armor and not made for function?

the photo is from Russia, but it makes me think of Poland - some huge fucking industrial coal-burning hellcomplex filled the surrounding hills with foul-smelling smog on the way to Krakow, i could swear they built at least half of the country's coal plants directly northwest of the city in one big pile of cooling towers

Since people are curious, the reason for the bug eyes is so the person has full use of their vision and peripherals. The top fans on the brow are for eye protection in general as you would lower your head forward to provide a kind of shutter vs debris/arrows. It is also adjustable as you can see to reduce or increase the eye hole size.
The issue of being stabbed in the eye was actually not large, as a successful swing to head was just as easy of a death sentence as you would get thrown on the ground not to mention easier to do. A target in melee combat would be moving much too quickly to chance a stab for a relatively small point on a large body not to mention to be in a position to safely stab someone like that you would have so many better opportunities to disable them. It would be seen as a dangerous gamble that would most likely fail.

Why is it then that other than really oddball helmets like that one all normal styles of helmets seem to have really tiny eye slots or holes? Protecting your face as much as possible must have been really necessary otherwise they wouldn't have sacrificed the something as important as ability to see clearly.

Huh, to me it sorta looks like he's taken art from elsewhere, then cut & pasted them together. I see a bunch of imperfections in those images.

They look more like student results from a 2nd week photoshop collage class. Are these actually his drawings, or just other peoples work? A lot of his work just looks really uncanny and overly photoshoped to a point that ruins the images.

I believe the heating is mostly due to air being compressed around the rocket, and not so much from friction. I might be wrong.

You need a context of time period, area, and use.
I did a reverse google search on the helmet, all clues point me towards that this was a north italian helmet (note that this was part of the HRE at the time), from about 1620.
By this time in warfare in the HRE areas, esp around northern italy and the alps, not so many people used bows or crossbows anymore. In eastern europe those practices were still somewhat popular, but the central HRE had long ago started adopting more and powerful firearms. However, melee combat of course still happens, with firearms being what they were.
Further, this is a siege helmet, a closed burgonet. It was a bit more common with fully open burgonets, and it seems that sometimes closed burgonets like this was called a savoy helmet. So we know for sure this helmet was for warfare, and not for any manner of civilian use. If the categorisation of a siege helmet is true, we can also assume it was not worn on horseback.
If you're in a siege, unless the enemy sally out, projectiles are more like to come from above. And this helmet otherwise give you perfect perfect melee protection ,what with the curves and what not. Also thanks to the protrusions a hit even with a crushing weapon might displace enough force that you will hopefully not take the full hit. Stabs to the eyes are a danger, yes, but i'd rather be able to see incoming stabs like that.
This is also a renaissance helmet. The evolution of helmets is indeed an interesting matter. Compare to the early crusader helmets.

Someone asked about a lot of helmets having covered eye slits and so on, compared to the one posted previously. Full cover is indeed the best defense for obvious reasons, it will protect from most debris and projectiles. But it is a bitch to move and fight in. Breathing is bad, and vision is bad.
Back in the day, with the great helmets, they would usually not only wear that. Almost always, a bascinet or cerveliére (skull cap) would be worn underneath, as a close fitting helm. When we got better at working metal, we developed visors for the bascinets, and suddenly the great helm wasn't so popular anymore. Wikipedia mentions that crusaders would keep the great helm on for an initial clash with lances (and I surmise to get through any arrow harrassment from ranged troops), and later to remove it for melee combat. I know for sure there are historical iconographies and effigies depicting this very thing but I can't quite find them right now, so have this render of such a situation from the official mount & blade artwork.

Of course though, the design of a fully closed helm stayed, but then it became more and more for tournament uses etc. Some of those closed helmets still had visors, so they were effective in battle still, but they did have a primary purpose elsewhere.
Frog mouth helmets for example were used in tournaments (and I think for lance jousts) only.
[t]http://www.strongblade.com/history/images/Helmet_Frogmouth.jpg[/t]
The design helps the knight. When you lean forward with your rushing horse and lance, you get a lot of vision, thanks to the angles in play, and can acquire your target. As soon as you impact you jerk the head back up, and the visor "closes" and protects you from debris. Requires good training for sure, but it was a safe way of doing things.
I realised it was a logn time ago I posted about historical warfare or fighting here so maybe I'll start doing that again.
Great post G-Strogg. Frog mouth helmets are my absolute favourite

Thank you. Also this example of a frog mouth helmet is great. Look how it completely closes all vision in an upright position. Without leaning forward, you won't see a thing, but when yo ustay upright, only freak accidents will put lance debris in there.
Also note the little hooks and levers. It seems the front part of this was hooked on in two stages. Some frog helmets are a singular piece. I wonder if maybe this example was repurposed from maybe an armet? The plates at the back of the head look similar.
[t]http://static.webshopapp.com/shops/032318/files/011869365/german-armet.jpg[/t] this is a modern repro but there are some similarities.
