Sunset seen from 2300m high at the top of a mountain: [t]http://i.imgur.com/RMViico.jpg[/t] Linking this one because huge: http://i.imgur.com/njwQzli.jpg
Where was that taken, and who took them?
Where was that taken, and who took them?
Wimmis, Switzerland. I took the sunset picture, the huge panorama one was taking by a friend at whose place I stayed.
because you are not bringing more CO2 into the cycle. You know that trees and plants make oxygen, they do that by taking the C out of CO2 to make O2. This C will be used to grow, so you are temporarily storing the Carbon. Yes, burning wood puts CO2 in the air but the wood took the C out of the air beforehand anyway. When you are using fuel from underground carbon deposits, you do add to the cycle because those deposits were made in millions of years (compared to decades with trees). This destabilizes the cycle.
Unless you lower the total population of tree in the world, right? (Which afaik we are..?)

I love it's boundless optimism and slightly abstract nature. Everything has speed slats and smooth streamlined shapes because the future is that way and we're gonna get there fast. And every shape is a celebration of the fantastic technological achievement that is this object.
Looks like the town hall thing in LA

The 30s vision of the future was really something. I wish it played out. Art deco is a great style.
You are right on target with the boundless optimism thing. The 30s vision of the future was really something. I wish it played out. Art deco is a great style.
Pretty much. I think what i find so appealing is that it's expressing a wonder and appreciation for the achievements of modern man that's simply since worn off. I mean just look at this fucking thing. All the glory lines radiate out from the knob. The numbers circle around it like a ring of sycophants, because that knob is the key to unlocking the unimaginable magic of being able to listen to music, news, plays or just people from thousands of miles away at a whim. The market rewarded the art deco movement/style because the public opinion was "holy fuck this is amazing. Humanity is so great, we're doing good things. hell yes." Whereas modern design is asthetically pleasing, but apart from cars, our modern design language is all about minimalism and blending into the background. Nothing is novel, and everything is off to the side where it belongs. And frankly, i think we should be damn proud of what we've done. But no, even something as vastly complicated and wonderful as central heating and electric lights is just a mundane facet of life now. It's a shame most people don't appreciate it all. That shit ain't right.

i found this very interesting and couldn't think of where else i could put it legendary author H.G. Wells (War of the Worlds, Time Machine etc.) reviews (brutalizes) the new science fiction motion picture "Metropolis", 1927 [t]http://erkelzaar.tsudao.com/reviews/metro163.jpg[/t]
I have recently seen the silliest film. I do not believe it would be possible to make one sillier.
http://erkelzaar.tsudao.com/reviews/H.G.Wells_on_Metropolis%201927.htm something tells me Herbert wouldn't be a fan of cyberpunk or many sci-fi staples of today
Isn't that the movie that basically gave birth to the modern dystopia? Also did HG Wells write any other books outside of War of the Worlds and The Time Machine because that's the only two I've heard of by him. I also know he did a few short stories.
The Island of Doctor Moreau is another pretty well known story of his i've also taken interest interest in one called the War in the Air, a pre-WW1 world war story where global superpowers employ fleets of airplanes and zeppelins to pummel each other into the dirt. he also apparently wrote about submarine-launched missiles and nuclear war before they were things he also did a whole pile of speculative fiction and philosophical, futuristic thoughts on the state and direction of the world, as well as alternative reality speculation and such what-ifs. being a socialist utopist, he had some pretty wild and optimistic visions of the ways things could go (and in his opinion SHOULD go if society is to survive and evolve) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._G._Wells_bibliography
wayne tower
that building is fucking dope but tbh im interested in these encom tower looking motherfuckers i really love modern 'mirrors edge' style architecture, and a lot of high-end skyscrapers and stuff all over the world look fucking amazing, but i think that a large majority of modern buildings are extremely bland and uninspired. i realize not every single building can be a work of art but it feels like we've gone from a majority of buildings be really impressive both technically and aesthetically to that impressiveness being focused on a much smaller minority of buildings, which is sad.

I was trying to figure out what massive coastal city in Poland has such awesome architecture until I realized you're Singaporean, not Polish
rest of world, are you even trying?
my country's cities are a mess of fancy architecture from the mid-1800s to early 1900s, soviet brutalism and horrible modern glass and steel abominations so, nyet i guess
rest of world, are you even trying?
Eh, its difficult comparing Singapore to other countries. Most cities in other countries are hundreds of years old, and you got alot of bureaucratic red tapes preventing all these fancy stuff being build. You really need a government who gives no shit and just want everything best for its economy, aka Singapore. This was what its like in the 60s: Took like 50 years to look like that. But, it was like your typical South East Asian developing shithole back then, I'm glad it changed for the better. [editline]11th May 2017[/editline] If you ever visit Singapore, hit me up, I'll be sure to be your tour guide.
I don't know shit about architecture but in the downtown area there's a lot of buildings that were built in the 19th Century and early 20th including a lot of Victorian Era homes, most of which are run down before the people who have owned never took care of them although some have been or are being restored. I'm personally a fan of the old brick and mortar architecture(I don't know the real name for it). [T]https://www.theworkingmomstravels.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/DSC06214.jpg[/T]
