The idea was that without guidance (by slave owners) they would just be lazy and eventually starve to death since the workings of the western world are "too advanced for the black mind".

You just know the creator of that song did that on purpose.
Man he/she must've had a fucking blast composing that masterpiece.

It's not unusual for abandoned rail beds to be re-purposed into roads. I trace abandoned railways on Google Earth when I'm bored sometimes and I occasionally come across one that's been partially converted to a road.

An old railway line where I live has been re-purposed into a cycle path. It's not quite done yet but when it is it'll be 48 miles long.

In my first year of high school, we did some report thing on our local athenaeum's art gallery. While we were meant to make a catalog of the entire gallery, the centerpiece of the entire collection was still an original piece by Bierstadt, titled Domes of the Yosemite:

However, this picture alone doesn't do any justice to the seeing the real thing in person, because the real thing is 116 x 180 inches (295 x 457 cm) in size, and takes up an entire gallery wall. Possibly due to fact that its height is equal to that of two men and its width is equal to the height of three, there doesn't appear to be a single high-resolution image of the piece, especially by Google Art Project -- which is truly a shame, because it's an adventure to pick out every brushstroke and nuance that you can find on the canvas, and just bask in the fact that Bierstadt really did put down 20,880 square inches of oil paint. That's dedication, if you ask me
If you know the process for oil painting as well, you have to work in layers which is why these pieces took very large amounts of patience and time.

The Trans Pennine Trail is mostly old railway lines which have been converted into cycle paths, it now goes fully across the country:
