Gérard Trignac: Pretty cool French illustrator/etcher who's in his 60's now. Some of his stuff looks like it would fit in a Quake level. That second one gives me weird feelings
They all have a haunting atmosphere to them, like they were all pictures from after some sort of cataclysmic event.
That second one gives me weird feelings
I've dreamed of similar massive industrial landscapes before... Also it looks a lot like Dishonored to me too
Gérard Trignac: *images*
Reminds me of early HL2 and Dark City.
either that or Dark Souls
Actually according to some tumblr post (reliable I know) he was one of the inspirations behind Ico's art style. O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil's kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother. Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig's snout, mare's arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother! So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse! - Koshovyi otaman Ivan Sirko, with the whole Zaporozhian Host.

i don't get what this is supposed to mean Regardless, i love me some historical shitposting. That's brilliant, if it's true or not i love it.
Muslims, historically, have considered Jews and Christians to be fellow "People of the Book" - followers of the same god, generally good people, just in disagreement over certain theological things. Note also the "steadfast guardian of the tomb of Jesus Christ" bit - Jesus is recognized as a prophet in Islam, under the name 'Isa (which is also used as a given name). Muslim nations generally allowed Christians and Jews to live among them, in contrast to other religions which were entirely forbidden. It wasn't modern religious equality - there were extra taxes and marriage restrictions and all kinds of bullshit - but it was better than medieval Europe often was, where being the wrong denomination of Christian could get you killed. And it was considered a holy obligation to protect other "people of the book" from the heathens. Thus, "Great Defender of Christians". The "Confounder" was a bit of a humblebrag about how he'd also completely crushed a bunch of Christian armies - there's an old sense of "confound" meaning "to devastate, to ruin".
oh ok. Maybe it's just because i've been neck deep in reading up on Wahabism recently, but with things like the Jizya tax and crazy uncle Mo's hate boner for the jews after the jewish tribe betrayed him, i guess i forgot that islamic states happily co-existed with christianity or judaism at one time. Mehmed's wikipedia page doesn't say anything about his application of stuff like Jizya and i'm not up on my ottman history around that time so who knows, maybe he really meant it.

They viewed themselves as merciful and lawful and respectful, and so they took titles that reflected that. It's like how modern American presidents style themselves "the Leader of the Free World". It's not completely a lie but it sure says more about how we perceive ourselves than it does about what we actually are.
