How long has it been there? I count no less than 5 dead segments (assuming the top right one is one segment and not 2 or more), which is pretty bad.

sorry ahead of time for the microscopic image, I'm waiting on an email back from the NPS for the actual photo, so I can hopefully get it in hi res
I work at Harpoon in boston. I recently found a document with all the historical info about our building and all the other buildings in what used to be the naval yard, and our building is there
here's Building 53

I didn't know much about it when I started working there, but as I've gone along I've seen more and put a bunch together. It's pretty neato. The fishery next door (who owns the building now), Nagle, still uses the cranes. I can only assume they operate three of originally four, because the one that's still intact but now stationary between walls and shelving is labeled '53-4', as in building 53, crane 4. Kinda wanna go up there and take some pictures...
Here's the document (PDF file) about the area, search 'Building 53' to end up where I found the original picture and some info about the other buildings in the area.
also ps, if you come to boston, know that Harpoon is an oasis of niceness in a sea of rich quick pop-up yuppie skyscrapers and rich people bait in Seaport.

I have stared at this picture for about 5 minutes and can't tell what I'm suppose to be looking at. Can you explain the context?

Its really really clear water, look close around the wrinkles near the wrist

I think it's based on how clear the water is.
I shall remain late, I regret nothing!
Two very sweet videos I found that I'd like to share:

Wow. Never realized that it was that big. TBH though I'm not sure I really had any idea in my head about how big Vietnam was.
Also not sure it's really a map projection problem here. The latitudes aren't hugely different, so even in a Mercator projection where things near the poles are horribly distorted you get something similar enough:
During the Civil War a plan was devised to provide one man in each unit with a ‘coffee grinder’ which would be inserted into the stock of a rifle musket or carbine. Very few weapons were actually so modified. There are probably more weapons with ‘coffee grinder’ adaptations on the market today than were ever originally produced.
And a Sharps carbine with a mill for grinding oats for Cavalry horse feed.

From his autobiography:
"Soon after the kick-off fog began to thicken rapidly at the far end, travelling past Vic Woodley in the Chelsea goal and rolling steadily towards me. The referee stopped the game, and then, as visibility became clearer, restarted it. We were on top at this time, and I saw fewer and fewer figures as we attacked steadily.
I paced up and down my goal-line, happy in the knowledge that Chelsea were being pinned in their own half. 'The boys must be giving the Pensioners the hammer', I thought smugly, as I stamped my feet for warmth. Quite obviously, however, we were not getting the ball into the net, for no players were coming back to line up, as they would have done following a goal. Time passed, and I made several advances towards the edge of the penalty area, peering through the murk which was getting thicker every minute. Still I could see nothing. The Chelsea defence was clearly being run off its feet.
After a long time a figure loomed out of the curtain of fog in front of me. It was a policeman, and he gaped at me incredulously. 'What on earth are you doing here?' he gasped. 'The game was stopped a quarter of a hour ago. The field's completely empty.'
And when I groped my way to the dressing-room the rest of the Charlton team, already out of the bath, were convulsed with laughter."
