One of my 'Learn Dutch' programs is telling me to say "I am american!" and "the United States".
Nee :colbert:
On most forums I tell I come from Mini-America. Why you ask? Well so I can skip the "I'm from a small country you have never heard of nor cared about but politically we are so far up your arse that we some how adapted the same view points. Meanwhile you can't shut up about talking about America and presume everyone is from there (The world is a tiny bit larger than America).".
How do you mean up their arse and the same view points? (I know what up their arse means, I'm asking why do you think that?) I want to learn everything I can about the Netherlands.
It gives me a warm feeling that people are interested in the dutch culture and language [img]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/heart.png[/img]

My family is mostly dutch, only I can't speak it fluently and I live in England (I still have lots in the Netherlands) :frown:
I think it is the best country ever. :keke: I love everything about it. The people, the culture, the food, the history, the language...everything! My Tante Cor (I think that's how you spell her name?) says that Rotterdam has gone pretty downhill recently, with lots of Turks. What do you guys think?
I always support the Netherlands over England/Britain in anything!
I'm Dutch at heart, and maybe someday I will get a Dutch citizenship.
Back in the ye olden days we were a republic "Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden / Zeven Provinciën Republic of the Seven United Netherlands / Seven Provinces" (1581–1795), having a constitution and all that yazz (pretty successful to).
<insert some Anglo-Dutch warfare>
Skip a few years till the American revolution.

So yeah those revolutionaries are fight there ass of in the new world assisted by the French and everyone else who isn't buddies with the UK (Pretty much republics versus monarchies), we jump in and start harassing the UK ships and be a general annoyance.
Having that stuff done the US needed a constitution, and they were influenced by the Dutch one and is overall is strikingly similar. And keeping overall good relations. Its also said that there constitution was written on paper made in the Netherlands.
Then we skip to recent years or the Iraq and Afghanistan wars which was generally seen as "the US jumps in and we get to clean up the mess", lengthening or starting new missions didn't really help.
Really informative, thanks. I just have one question (possibly stupid...). Who are those in the video supposed to be? I'm finding it pretty confusing. I figured I can't continue with the video unless I know who they are, otherwise it will be meaningless.
Why did we (the dutch) jump in and start harassing the UK?
I also don't understand why the Netherlands is relatively unmentioned here in the UK. It makes no sense how we learn German over Dutch. Fair enough, we hassled (You don't mind if I refer to myself as Dutch do you? My mother tells me to say we're Dutch [sp]We're proud of the Netherlands, not Britain[/sp]) Britain in the past, but so did Germany, and a lot more...so why? I understand though how it's probably because of Germany's huge size and remarkable automobile manufacturing (Reliable auto-manufacturing/technicians are relied upon here in the UK). It just disappoints me how I never got the opportunity to learn Dutch at school. I asked in sixth form, but my request was ignored and the 'Dutch club' was never started. :sigh:
Finally, why do you call it "Cleaning up the mess"? How do you mean?

I guess the Turks and the Moroccans are a pretty sensitive subject. As far as I know a lot of Dutch people believe there are too many Turks and Moroccans in our country. I, also have a opinion about this certain subject but I think sharing this here would be in the wrong place.
All I know is that this land is seen as a country of wealth and good, which is what attracts a lot of foreign people.
Wow, so the US and the Netherlands are really tight.
If anything though, why do you refer to the Netherlands as "Mini-america"? It seems as though the US should be referred to as "Giant Netherlands"

Would absolutely love that! You guys are really helpful. I'll be back soon, just picking something up.
I am okay with the US except the whole "FREEDOM!" shit going on over there.
If you are gay or you are a Cross-dresser you get almost kicked to death in the US while we are chill and cool about that over here.
I would not really call it mini-america

It seems everybody is openly discussing it.
The biggest problem is the general unsafe feeling it causes. Many people admit, but not openly, that they feel unsafe in certain neighbourhoods or even cities. A recent report showed that only 23% of the white people in Amsterdam had a positive image of Moroccans. You can't blame them. The image most Moroccans created for their people is severely negative. Here's how the Moroccans generally walk around:

(Could be a dramatization)
But that isn't the entire image they created by putting up this kind of behaviour.
In every IQ test that made a comparison between Morrocan and autochthonous Dutch people, the autochthonous Dutch people win by a huge margin. 85% of the Moroccans is incapbable of going further than
middle school. Let me explain something quickly about the Dutch educational system, You have:
Basic practical education (Praktijkonderwijs)
VMBO
HAVO
VWO
These are the different levels of middle school. You then have higher education. A HAVO diploma is generally accepted as a good education. While, no more than 6% of the Moroccans reach HAVO, let alone finish it.
Also, recent numbers said that 60% of the Moroccans only got between basic education and VMBO. This shows they are generally badly educated.
This means, that they aren't of any worth to this country in the jobs that require higher education. Alot of Moroccans also live on Dutch welfare, which gets paid for through Dutch taxes.
I don't want to be generalizing the Moroccan people here, because many of them are just kind, loving human beings. But it is the image that mostly the teens created in this country which creates racism and hate. And the Netherlands is famous for being open to everybody.
One of my great granddads is from England, never bothered to look it up.
Which is funny as we are now known for our bland food, and dry humor(which is only of resent times as we were known for our good humor).
Now for my view on Rotterdam. As far as I have seen it really has gone to the shitter, the place gives me the feeling of being general unsafe. And schools look like garbage dumps. I'm glad that I do a evening course (my last school in Delft had a lot of racism, mainly from foreigners I may add).
Learn the language, as a language course costs 1K in tax money :v: .
There are no stupid questions. The video was a song about no taxation without representation, its there to just give a bit more feeling to the post.
Probably because England started to attacking our colony "Nieuw Nederland (New Netherland now known as New York)", old grudges or treaties could be involved but never bothered to look into it.
Probably because it hadn't had a big impact, sort of happens when you were the biggest empire that the world has ever seen. It makes sense, general a second language is taught at a school which will be useful later on for work and such. Germany was and probably still is, Dutch is that much and having the habit of being bi or even trilingual makes it even a less important language. Sure why not.
It generally gave the feeling that it wasn't our business. After a lot of general complaints about it they now want to selling it as a rebuilding missions or training even promising that there will be no fighting involved, which was proved wrong several times as we did do some fighting.
Its more a joke I personally make, for the things shown above. It gives me a feeling that were are just a puppet state.
Going down paragraph by paragraph :keke:
How come you haven't bothered to look it up? Is it because we're embarrassing? There's a question I've been really wanting to know the answer to: What do the Dutch people think about the English?
I think I'm going to stay out of Rotterdam then, at least until I get a house and car.
I really do want to learn the language! I'm learning it independantly now, but I want to study it as a course, preferably over in the Netherlands! Do you know of anywhere where they teach Dutch to English students?
I'd like to add that I sometimes feel honestly scared when walking past a Moroccan teen. Recently, I was at my fathers, and this typical Moroccan guy from around 18 years old came at the door. My father opened the door and the entire time he was standing at the door I was keeping an eye on him. Watching if he was attempting to attack my father or something of the like. I later found out he was selling subscriptions to a newspaper which earnings it donated to the mentally ill children. It shows the, sometimes subconscious, fear of Moroccan or Turkish people we have.

Of course I can't represent the opinion of every Dutch person, but I like, nay, love the English. The culture, the accent, (not the food). I have yet to meet a cranky, a-social English person on the streets.
I live in Hoorn, Noord-Holland and the general atmosphere here is kind and social. We also have a community centre which teaches Dutch to foreign people I believe.

I hope I am not completely ruining your view on the Netherlands because it is still a great place to live :v:.
But, it seems that most Dutch people don't see it as a actual problem yet. We don't want to ruin the view of the Netherlands because foreign people are still a great source of income. Closing our borders to foreigners wouldn't fit the Dutch image we are trying to carry.
Is every Dutchman patriotic? :keke:
It's great that there are community centres for that, kind of comforting.
Would really like to know if I can study Dutch in the Netherlands, I'll go to Google now but if any of you know of somewhere it would be great!

You can do paid online courses where you get your own coach, but you don't need to leave the comfort of your house :v:.
Take a look here:

At NTI you get fellow students on a forum, your personal mentor and a experienced teacher. Furthermore you can plan your own study times and you can take as many breaks as you want :v:

In all seriousness, I live in Gouda (de kaas stad), in de Marokkaanse buurt.

What do you guys think about this?
A nephew of mine is going to Utrecht in holland to learn Dutch. It will take 2 weeks.
Do you want to follow it on a school or at home?

Follow it on a school for as long as possible.
At school is better as you only can learn to speak a language if you speak it a lot.
Definitely.
My nephew is going to the same school as princess Maxima did. I am not sure what school that is, but i thought it was in Utrecht.
I think that school is one of the best educational schools to learn our language

I really need some rest now, i will go to bed now
I will ask him tomorrow.
Weltrusten iedereen
die is me dr eentje
