If you're trying to make a makeshift bandage, do not use any fluffy material, you don't want the people in the hospital to try and pull out fibres that have healed into wounds.

I've heard that a combination of salt and freshly squeezed lemon juice works just fantasticly as a painkiller.
If you get shot then there's not much you can do unless you're an expert paramedic with good tools around you. Bits of your clothes are going to do jack shit unfortunately. Don't forget 70% of people who get shot in anywhere important (chest, thigh ect.) die anyway. Good luck though.
