Actually drugs are the backbone of most gangs. It's where they get the vast majority of their profits. Same with Cartels, though Cartels are on an entire separate level, they're more like well funded terrorists / militants.

and I completely understand and agree with that point, although I just thought it was a bottomless argument when it came to gangs.
Just stay under the radar and avoid wearing wrong colors. And "Mexican Mafia" doesn't seem so legit, sounds more like some stupid group of teenies to be honest.
I don't know where you live, but the only hispanic gang you should really avoid is the Mara Salvatrucha, which are only in Cali AFAIK (correct me if I'm wrong.).
But yeah, low profile and no wrong colors. Since this is pretty serious, see if you can get homeschooled or something.

Hey, I just try to mind my own business, and not stand out. I have to walk to the nearby train station and catch a train (herp, obviously) to get home (well, to get off at another train station and catch a bus). Nearly every derro that goes to the school has to go to the same train station to go to the crater they live in (which is the other way from where I go, fortunately you could say).
All the fights happen in or around there, and it's so bad you get 15 year old try-hards pushing 60 year old men (who mind you, had been minding their own business) on to the tracks just for fun. I don't get any trouble from any of them, but I just hate being around them. Can't wait till I can get my own car in March and be able to drive to school, although I'd still park somewhere obscure a few blocks away.
Go and buy a full suit of reinforced kevlar and a gun then go be the hero your school needs you to be op.

I come from WI and there's pretty much little to no gang activity except in Milwaukee,
so I wouldn't know. Last time I've read about the MS13 was a long while ago probably before they
