• Piracy? or Try before you buy?

Okay, I'm not sure if this point has been made or not, but if it has been I'll reiterate it. Imagine a brand new car at a cars dealership. You really want that brand new car, but you can't afford it. I would think most people agree with me when I say its a luxury and you don't NEED it. So if you took it without the car dealership's permission, you'd obviously get in a lot of trouble. You also don't get to take it, drive it off the lot without permission, drive it around for a few weeks and then come back and say "Yep! This meets my expectations!" You'd get in a lot of trouble then as well. Now for the whole argument of 'it wouldn't be a lost sale if the person couldn't afford it.' If the torrent wasn't available and the person really wanted the game enough, he/she would save up for it. So in a way, the torrent is causing a lost sale. I don't really see any way piracy is justifiable. But hey, this probably won't stop anyone from pirating, just my 2 cents.
piracy isnt stealing stealing goes like this: you have a car i steal your car overnight your car isnt there in the morning piracy goes like this: you have a car i pirate it overnight its still there
Pirating the game beforehand is a good way to tell whether or not your PC will be able to run it. I did it for BF3 before I went out and bought it.
Whenever I've pirated a gane, it loses it's appeal too damn faat and I don't want to get into it BECAUSE I gaven't spent money to have fun. Thus why I don't pirate games. Hell, I even bought spore after pirating it because I knew it would be more fun when I had the drive to play it properly. I mean, try before you buy does exist. However I'd say it would exist more with say adobe software etc rather than cheap games, because it removes the daunting "what if I don't become good at it", so you end up with veterans in their teens eventually buying it as adults.
I don't allow pirated PC games to determine the amount of bugs that the retail version has. Usually, those bugs are caused by cracks.

Sure, when you pirate you don't actually steal a tangible object, but at the end of the day you're still making use of a good or service provided by a business without paying them for it, which is not good for the operation of the business or the creator of the product.

Rest of your argument is valid though.
problems i have with it: 1. video gaem companies get shut down 2. fuckton of viruses 3. FBI is always watching 4. dangerous stuff man dangerous stuff as in if you torrent too much someone is gonna dig up your ip and irl ban you
With music I tend to listen to it on YouTube to see if I like it, then pirate a lot of it and see if I still like it after listening to it a lot, and, if I like it, I buy it. I bought 7 albums yesterday because I liked the music (the shop had all of it on 2 for £5 or 3 for £5 so it came to £15). With games I can't say because the games I have pirated I only did so because a friend was nagging me to get it and, as expected, I didn't like it, or with Most Wanted, I already owned the PS2 version. All my other games I have paid for (mainly steam)
For me, I'll pirate the big 60 overcharge stuff, thats an outrageous price, but for indie games, I'll maybe pirate to try, but I will always buy those indie small company games.

If I'm unsure about a game I want then I'll pirate it but it usually stays on my pc for like 12 hours before I delete it and buy it on steam/amazon or leave it if it was shit, for example I pirated Spore, played it and decided it offered a few chuckles and deleted it, the same with the sims 3 (recurring theme with EA) Also the only thing I've kept for a while that I've pirated was The Big Bang theory, And Adobe stuff, but I'm yet to meet a person who has got photoshop 100% legitimately who isn't at a school or buisness [editline]5th September 2012[/editline]
With music I tend to listen to it on YouTube to see if I like it, then pirate a lot of it and see if I still like it after listening to it a lot, and, if I like it, I buy it.
If you can't afford it then why do you deserve to have it?
That's a horrible argument. If someone is working to support themselves/a family and doesn't have the extra cash to spend, then I can fully understand the idea of pirating overcharged games. As for indie games, it still works similarly. Try before you buy. If you don't like it, uninstall it. If you like it, buy it.

Why does the fact that it's "overpriced" (completely in your own opinion) change anything?

If they're looking to get luxury items for free, then they're greedy bastards and have mixed priorities. Just the fact you go out of your way to get the pirated version means that you really wanna spend the money but don't have it. That means you're not prepared at all for money matters.
If you can't afford it then why do you deserve to have it?
are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more 'deserving' of games than others?
I usually will pirate a movie or game before I buy it in store to see if It's really worth buying if there isnt a free/demo version available.
are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more 'deserving' of games than others?
No, we're implying that its the same argument made by people who steal things like food and basic necessities. Meaning the argument is putting games on the same level as basic requirements of sustaining life.
For me, I only download a game when I want to do two things. Try before you buy and to test how well my PC can handle the game, if at all. After maybe half an hour of playtime, I add the game to my backlog of games. Of course, I say all this. I still haven't bothered downloading any recent games. The last one I got was The Italian Job game, and that didn't even work.
are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more 'deserving' of games than others?
Nope But you could apply that logic to every single item of value ever. Are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more deserving of Ferrari's than others? Are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more deserving of Rolex's than others? Are you implying that the wealthy are somehow more deserving of mansions's than others?
Yeah, I guess a rule I try to go by is everything pirated is either eventually bought or already owned in the past, like.. shitty fun gameboy games.
I pirate games that I think have unreasonable prices (60 dollar games go to hell), or if it's already been purchased but I can't access it. I'll buy games that are around 10$ because I think it's reasonable and more convenient to just buy it I hate the idea of 60 dollar games, especially when the game itself has shit effort put into it, is unfinished, buggy, and all around shitty. Other than that, I can't justify my piracy, but I don't think I have to. People make money off of me without me spending money, be that telling my friends about the game if I liked it, viewing ads on their website, etc.
I hate the idea of 60 dollar games, especially when the game itself has shit effort put into it, is unfinished, buggy, and all around shitty.
Then why are you playing the game? If it costs too much then why are you playing it? If it's shitty then why are you playing it?
Then why are you playing the game? If it costs too much then why are you playing it? If it's shitty then why are you playing it?
+1 Hes more or less stating that just because a game in his opinion is over priced it gives him the right to acquire it through piracy.
US citizens may find this an alien concept, because their government is very fair about these things with most of US taxpayer funded works being public domain. I'm a big fan of pirating government works where I have paid tax for something to be created, and the government then want to charge me a fortune to use it. The main example that grinds my gears is maps. I have paid my share of the UK Ordanance Survey annual budget, and I refuse to pay them again for the privelage of using their data. So I gleefully posess a full set of 1:25k maps covering the full country and I will argue until I am blue in the face that what I have done is morally acceptable.
I only pirate things when I have a sure plan to buy them in mind, but don't have the money upon release. This has happened a few times in the past, and I know that doesn't really justify illegally obtaining it until I do have the money to buy it, but if I still have full intentions of paying it I don't see the harm in it. It also helps me decide if it's really worth the money or not, hence the 'try before you buy' sort of thing. If a game doesn't have a demo, how will I know it's worth spending my money on it if I can't try it first? [editline]e[/editline] The only other case is downloading games I can't find anywhere else, via Steam or GoG or anything that doesn't normally do old-school ROM stuff.
I don't understand this whole idea that somehow paying for it later makes it okay. The fact you have to plan to buy it later means you know what you're doing is wrong and are trying to make up for it by buying it later. You don't need the game now, you can wait.

If it's on Steam, I can't return it and get my money back. The fact that I plan to buy it later means I don't have the money right now and I plan to buy it later, simple as that. I'm not doing it to rectify my awful disgusting pirate actions or whatever; I want to buy the game and am going to do so, and why would I put off playing it if I have the capability to play it while I wait for my next paycheck, etc.?
+1 Hes more or less stating that just because a game in his opinion is over priced it gives him the right to acquire it through piracy.
She* Her* Because I want to try it. I don't finish shitty games often. It's not like I'm stealing anything when I pirate the game. Nothing is exchanged, nothing is lost. I wouldn't have bought it either way.
