I don't know about you, but one of the largest and most well known forums in the internet, Forocoches (Pretty much a Spanish SA) use an invite only system and there's absolutely no shitposting.
Also limits potentially & genuinely good posters that just don't know any current members.
And some people might start a big shitposting ring where 1 makes a account for spewing shit and the rest of that gang invites it.
People, we just need a cooling off period and an introduction forum. None of this complicated shit, and none of this spending money stuff
Or a bigger, more strict modteam to mow down the shitposters and alts.
Please, please, please no steam login, oh god no it is so bad.
How about having to give garry your picture with timestamp, or your ID with timestamp :v.
(Data collection, hihihi)
Or just create OIFY of the freshmen.
all the other ideas sound bad compared to steam registration, you know, especially pay to enter and lurk
Having to sign in with steam every time would be inconvenient for using public computers or mobile.
Perhaps just sign in with it once on registration to verify?
No, silly, you register with steam, not sign in with steam
Nothing will change literally at all other than it'll secretly mark your FP account and steam account together and then let you register. With steam, everyone is assumed to generally have only 1 or maybe 2, so, obviously, they can only use their steam account once. If they are permabanned they are fucked. They can't just jump up and go make an alt or make 20 using proxies and wait a week (thus just making more useless accounts, we don't want random accounts, just to greatly limit them)/
it's the only realistic way to stop spammers. And restricting them to X forums or intro forums solves nothing because there are still spammers and the entire point is to stop mass registration. People can still make alts in bulk with other options, even if it is slowed slightly.
Lurk systems are the worst, because you can still alt spam and people that need real help are fucked.
an invite system is silly because now you have begging for invites because they're new to steam/gmod/fp, and there's already so many shit posters, they'll just invite other shit posters :v:
Maybe we should just get rid of Fast threads and it's filth?
they'll just spread to GD and SH and shit on everything
remember when the furry forums were removed?
Or a bigger, more strict modteam to mow down the shitposters and alts.
Nah, you'll just get more dickhead mods
have to be careful selecting them after all.
honestly I would be fine with a steam sign-in. And if it was possible, you could check if the steam account tied to the FP account has garry mod or not, for the garry's mod subforums. Maybe restrict them from even viewing the subforum if they don't have garry's mod on the account or something.
And then most of the furries left or got banned, and facepunch doesn't really have any furry topics anymore (besides dragon megathread). Sounds like removing the furry subforum worked as intended, so why would removing fast threads be any different? People keep saying they'll spread to other forums and shit on everything, but in reality they'll just get banned for shitposting.

You can do an invite only system and still get new members. Just make it so new members can only post in a "new member" forum and once they get an invite from someone who views that forum (like a mod/gold member or whatever) they can be apart of the full forum
That or they have gmod installed in which case they get a free pass (for support and such).

The furries didn't leave (only the ones that did leave literally did nothing on FP but the furry forum) most of them just moved on to posting about furry stuff in DMT or the gay thread...
OR
You can make an account just fine. If you want to post in CERTAIN forums, make a thread or post images/links you're gonna have to link your steam account.
I have an idea-
Don't let people post links or media until they've proven themselves as a good poster. People jump on the users page, click some kind of "I approve of this user" button and when the user has gathered enough approvals from the community they get full posting abilities. Lets Facepunch have a bit of control over who they want hanging around.
That'd be a good idea, but imo there shouldn't be a disapprove button lest people be declined membership due to differing opinions or just general twats. Although then occurs a problem on how to determine if someone's been deemed unfit for membership if there's no negative feedback tally. Perhaps some sort of deadline for a certain amount of approvals, but that also brings in a load of problems.

An effective system then that should maybe be introduced again then?
I think we would be off to a good start if we'd go the NeoGAF route and filter out "free" email services (outlook, hotmail, gmail..) and enforce the use of ISP, corporate and .edu adresses which would slow down trolls and filter out a LOT of the spammers.
That would be a stupid idea since many people rely on the free email.

Not all modern ISP's offer email services, not everyone works in a place with a website, and not everyone's a student.

I've literally never heard of anyone paying for email in my life. Outside of websites or business maybe. Even then.
If you're going to make something required to ID people steam is your only option. :v:
You have many options out side of the steam outside even then.
The idea isn't new though, I think back years ago the argument against this was people signing up for immediate help for let's say gmod for example. But w/e give it a shot
Make a help forum that newer people can post on?
Why don't we just keep the current system and just deal with the spam bots and shit posters like we have been for so long? Kinda pointless to try and make something new cause the spam bots and shit posters will still get through. It will only be a temporary roadblock that they will eventually find a very easy way around.
That or for your first 5 - 20 threads all have to be approved by a mod before they are posted to the forum.
Require a Steam account with at least one paid game.
Require a Steam account with at least one paid game.
This could work.

most people don't create threads anyways so having moderators manually approve new threads by new members probably wouldn't even be too tedious.
This could work.
I just don't see the need of that at all.
Just link it to the Steam account, you shouldn't have to spend money to access the site
Require a Steam account with at least one paid game.
but.. some facepunch players have no idea whats steam (aka general games discussion)
Banned members should at least be able to access the Drop Dead Thread
At least let them entertain themselves on Facepunch
I just don't see the need of that at all.

You should at least have Garry's Mod. Otherwise it would be pointless because you just create 100 new Steam accounts.
except the forum is a lot more than just gmod related things
except the forum is a lot more than just gmod related things
except garry doesn't want to (or have to) let anyone in at all anymore, but it would be in his best interests to at least allow people seeking Gmod support (or people with ANY OTHER paid game on steam)
Why don't we leave the GMOD section open at first and to get to the rest of the forums you have to request permission to post in them? That way spambots can only get to the gmod section and it keeps the clutter in there.

lets make a separate oify that is hosted off of facepunch for spam bots, and they are all redirected there so they think THAT is the real oify.
if that could/would happen that would be like the most bomb shit ever
Otherwise it would be pointless because you just create 100 new Steam accounts.
Have you tried 'just making' 100 new verified steam accts? I'm p sure steam won't let you, they're fairly against the idea of spammers on their network.
The obvious answers to all these problems is to bring back the smartness system
[editline]20th February 2013[/editline]
and 5 point thread ratings

Who said anything about paying, The point is that ISP adresses are usually restricted to one or a few per customer which increases the threshold for people to troll, now they can just evade bans easily using Guerillamail or making Gmail aliases(<adress>+extra@gmail.com is one of the most easy ban evaders there is).
By enforcing ISP and other restricted adresses we can make sure the 12-year olds can't easily drop in and 4chan this place up without intervention from a parent.
