[QUOTE=Hazurr;39653173]Who said anything about paying, The point is that ISP adresses are usually restricted to one or a few per customer which increases the threshold for people to troll, now they can just evade bans easily using Guerillamail or making Gmail aliases(<adress>+extra@gmail.com is one of the most easy ban evaders there is).
By enforcing ISP and other restricted adresses we can make sure the 12-year olds can't easily drop in and 4chan this place up without intervention from a parent.[/QUOTE]
What about those of us with custom domain? I'm [email]shank@shanked.me[/email]. What do I do?
[QUOTE=ShaunOfTheLive;39649764]Require a Steam account with at least one paid game.[/QUOTE]
This is a good solution. If you're here for anything, it's games of some kind. It requires monetary investment for shitposters, and easily stops spam. If people want to join that bad, they can go buy something cheap, like Half Life 2, and be able to post even if they don't want the game.

[QUOTE=Zerokateo;39649312]Why don't we just keep the current system and just deal with the spam bots and shit posters like we have been for so long? Kinda pointless to try and make something new cause the spam bots and shit posters will still get through. It will only be a temporary roadblock that they will eventually find a very easy way around.
That or for your first 5 - 20 threads all have to be approved by a mod before they are posted to the forum.[/QUOTE]
I've dealt with anti-spam on forums before. It's a load of shit and nobody likes dealing with it. Even with massive amounts of anti-spam (recaptcha + q & a quiz captcha + cloudflare) stuff still gets passed. This is what gets blocked on a small (6,000 visitors a day) forum each day:
[img]http://puu.sh/25uOJ[/img]
I cleared it out a month ago, and I've got 260 pages of that stuff.
Edit: To clarify, those accounts pass all registration tests and get to the spam blacklist checks. Most of those are triggered on *name* alone, so if a spam bot started randomizing it'd be a lot more likely to get through. I don't know how vB operates, but xenForo has 1 click spam cleaning and it's still a pain in the ass. God knows what FP has to do to prevent most of it from getting through.
[QUOTE=ojcoolj;39651969]Banned members should at least be able to access the Drop Dead Thread
At least let them entertain themwswsaselves on Facepunch[/QUOTE]
It should stay the way it is, no need to change. Being banned shouldn't be fun.

Why don't we just have more mods?
I'm sorry, this stupid ad came into my head:[video=youtube;vqgSO8_cRio]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqgSO8_cRio[/video]
[QUOTE=ShaunOfTheLive;39649764]Require a Steam account with at least one paid game.[/QUOTE]
Yeah I don't see why we need anything more than this.
Just have a 1 time tying process that ties your Steam and FP accounts together - it'll pretty much get rid of all alts entirely too (which is a good thing tbh)
No i want more bots
I need to BAN!
[QUOTE=Craptasket;39653979]No i want more bots

Do you get paid a dollar for every ban?
i've aggregated a significant portion of the discussion here and to me personally the best idea looks like say, you have access to the garry's mod help & support subforum from the start, but you have to wait a week to post everywhere else. that way everyone wins, really.
[editline]20th February 2013[/editline]
or you could restrict new users, prevent them from having an avatar, embedding images or media tags, or using [url] tags and ratings for a fortnight or something.
If you were to IP ban all Fast Threaders, the average quality of the forums would skyrocket, and you wouldn't have to charge for new registrations anymore. It's a bit of a win for everybody, as far as quality control is concerned.

make everyone mod for a week and let the trash sort itself. whichever caste emerges is the true hero of facepunch.
bringing back smartness would help

shit wait no PLEASE DON'T HIT ME WI-
[QUOTE=Arc Nova;39656537]bringing back smartness would help[/QUOTE]
That would be hard with me here
[QUOTE=nicatronTg;39653337]To clarify, those accounts pass all registration tests and get to the spam blacklist checks.[/QUOTE]
We had these, too.
Not a single captcha system that I've tried blocked them. I don't know how the bots did it.
At the moment we use a system that I made myself:
A rotating list of questions with placeholders and a semi-smart question-generator.
Example outputs:
[IMG]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/34110473/web_share/facepunch/captcha_failure.PNG[/IMG]
[IMG]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/34110473/web_share/facepunch/captcha_failure_2.PNG[/IMG]
No Spambots have solved any of these questions yet.
Aren't most spambots regular people these days?
[QUOTE=kimr120;39657244]Aren't most spambots regular people these days?[/QUOTE]
My understanding is they have sweatshops full of people who solve captchas, everything else is automated.
I think the questions should require some inside knowledge or a good understanding of English. My guess would be these people who solve the captchas have very little English skills beyond typing
[QUOTE=Zeke129;39635413]Integrate the rating system into the vetting process. Set it up so if a new user gets a certain number of dumbs (or other negative ratings) in a certain period of time they're automatically banned, but can post in the refugee camp to be unbanned just in case people were gaming the rating system or rating him dumb just because they disagree.
I'd also suggest keeping the actual criteria for the ban secret so it's harder to game it. Maybe even include a random delay between the rating limit being reached and the autoban so people can't figure out how it works.[/QUOTE]
Why not bring in some new mods that have to moderate the new guys, if their first ten posts are absolute shit - ban. If they're borderline then send them a message on posting etiquette and put them on probation, if they're good then they're free to run free amongst the grasses of Facepunch, there's obviously a subjective opinion on this but then that's the same with every moderator, that's why we have the refugee camp.
Then I suppose you could work this onto current members too I s'pose - Mods that do backlogs and clear out the cesspool of shitposters or bring to attention their shitty posting behaviour.
[QUOTE=Arc Nova;39656537]bringing back smartness would help[/QUOTE]
To be entirely honest, I miss it. Sure, it got a few words wrong (cleaver was apparently not spelled right.) Sure, it had some instant-ban words that could be accidently trigged; but you know what? It was working.
And it made posts look like this:
[quote]This is an average post.[/quote]
Instead of this, which we now call acceptable:
[quote]this is a avrage post, lol[/quote]
[QUOTE=Big Dumb American;39655293]If you were to IP ban all Fast Threaders, the average quality of the forums would skyrocket, and you wouldn't have to charge for new registrations anymore. It's a bit of a win for everybody, as far as quality control is concerned.[/QUOTE]
close all non gmf forums and ban all non ktt posters
Holy shit all the idiots who posted in that "Post in this thread and be permabanned" thread
my fiance was like "i want to be on the forum that you go on" but registration is closed.
sucks to be her.
this site needs an arc 4 mod
[QUOTE=kimr120;39657244]Aren't most spambots regular people these days?[/QUOTE]
Yeah, true. Sites like Mechanical Turk let you hire poor people for 2¢/hr. They can pass any captcha if they're not literally retarded.

Most people are flocking there to make sure none of their friends were dumb enough to post.

"Maybe people will like me if I score free wins here"
it's been a while since the last cull. seems like facepunch is changing.
also isn't something supposed to happen in june or somethin?
There are people you can hire that sit and enter captchas all day. I used to have a company do it when I used a bot for Bing Rewards.
Ok heres the problem with most of the suggestions in this thread, you're generalizing all new users and not giving the new users a chance to change and reform. You all started out on this forum posting a lot differently then how you did when you first join.
How about we find a better way to get rid of those bots without causing inconvience to the new members. Like find a way to manipulate the bots into posting in a subforms unseen by any regular user. A new member can prove that they're human in seperate
