Require all accounts registered from this point forward to link their Steam account to FP in order to view any forums, similar to how garrysmod.org users have to in order to be able to download from it. This alone SHOULD remove a whole shitload of undesirables from the site. This also to a degree verifies they are not a bot.
A Steam account should only be able to be linked to one FP account, as it would remove the ability to make alts. If a user's account is banned, then that associated Steam account is blacklisted from the site, so they can't just sign up again and link that Steam account.
If you want to go further and do a cleanout of the userbase (inactive users/alts/banned accounts that are just taking up space), require all existing accounts to do the same, notifying them they have 10 days to verify ownership of Gmod by linking their account to FP or their account will be pruned.
Just a thought. It probably won't be as simple to implement as I make it sound but to me it does sound like the simplest way to enact some 'quality control' on the forums. And really, if you don't own Gmod, you really have no reason to be here as this is the community site for Gmod.

Which is why I suggested making a verifying your ownership of Gmod a requirement to post on the forums. It's technically still a pay wall, but other than purchasing the game there wouldn't be any additional need to pay to use the forum (unless you want a fancy title or something).
As a guest you'd still be able to view the forums except for the Gmod related sections, but if you need support or want to post on the forums you have to prove you own the game first.
If you need more mods, get more mods.
Just open up registration again.

Maybe add a new username colour, say grey, that is assigned to any newly registered user from now on.
Grey users can only post in the GMOD section of the site, and perhaps have a zero-tolerance ban policy enforced upon them.
Allow them to buy an upgrade via the store that grants them blue user status. Maybe automatically promote them to blue status after a month or so.
If you link facepunch accounts to steam accounts with garrysmod this problem would get smaller.
Like how it worked on garrysmod.org, where you had to log in trough steam, but then make it check if the person registering actually has garrysmod.

Exactly. People are acting as if this forum is only for Garry's Mod, and any other discussion is negligible. Like someone said, we are the 13 largest forum in the world, and I'm sure we didn't get this way by exclusively being a support form for some Source mod. This is a complicated problem, and you can't say "Well just make them sign in with a steam account and be done with it." I think that would pretty severely diminish the diversity we encounter here.
Maybe just have the user permanently link up a steam account that has at least one paid steam game. Everyone on this forum from what I can see has a steam account and at least one game.

Still seems pretty limiting if you ask me. I've invited many people to this forum who don't have steam accounts.
Seperate the forum into two. One small forum for GMod support, which is free to register at, and one forum which is basically just Facepunch without GMod support. Then you could make it pay to sign up or something.
