Personal responsibility wouldn't work if you consider what seems to be the average age group of your average facepuncher.
I did not really consider Fp age group. It doesn't seem so good idea for something like Fp anymore.:v:
I like the idea of an anti-refugee camp. New users make an introduction thread/post which gets rated by members and then the ones with decent ratings get approved by a moderator. [editline]18th February 2013[/editline] Either that or bring a refined smartness system back.
We need the smartness system back. Maybe with some adjustments so people in certain threads can speak their own language. There are several threads dedicated for Swedish, Hebrew and other languages. EDIT: Or as you said, an anti-refugee camp. But the rule should be to not include political opinions. I know many of FP's users have different opinions but many seem to be liberal and they would rate a person who is republican or something else on that side negative only because they do not share the same opinion. EDIT: Also restrict how many edits in a post you can do. I am one person who should have restricted edits because I never fucking finish my posts.
Just add smartness back, make a non-english sub forum again where it's disabled. [editline]18th February 2013[/editline] Also what the hell happened to GD, it used to have pages upon pages of interesting threads, now it's just fast threads lite with more circlejerk.
This could work
Use a bit of jquery so nicely structured posts get an awfully giant dialog above them saying "THIS is how it's done". Gives users like WhiteHusky more incentive to lurk before they post (the guy never, NEVER listens to this advice) [editline]18th February 2013[/editline] My idea, send in your resume to be allowed clearance to post. If you're not a Harvard graduate (or similar education), you're permabanned on your IP AND MAC adress. Or prove you have 300 confirmed kills in the SEALs. Spergs only have access to an abomination of a forum worse than OIFY.

Have a new user group that can only view every sub-forum, and can only post in a "new user" sub-forum that they have to appeal to become a blue user. That way you can see from their first post what they are like and why they think they would be a good member for the forums.
I love those pointshop and karma ideas because they're literally what every shitty forum out there uses, come on fpers I thought you had some common sense A week of lurking is fine for most purposes, and at this point I can say I'd definitely pay to sign up on FP, just like how it is with SA. I can't think of many people who aren't registered who would, though, SA gets away with it because they're a massive thing.
So, Grey Members? Like old Guest accounts?
Oh, there were guest accounts? But yeah in essence. It would also make the people who did not qualify to become a blue either leave for good, which can be a good thing in some cases, or lurk more and understand how this forum works.
Personally I think an approval-like system would be good. Something like a little tick box under their avatar to say "This poster is good". You could then take it to level, so say after 5, they can post pictures and links, and after 10 then can make their own threads, at 15 they can choose an avatar, and once the limit is reached, the approval button disappears and they become a fully fledged blue member.
Oh, there were guest accounts?
iirc, a long time ago, guests were allowed one post, and they had no ability to rate, quote, make new threads or go to people's profiles. If I'm totally brain-crapping right now, correct me.
Why are we thinking of this complex shit? I registered to post a question at first, then I stayed. A non-posting time of 24 hours might just be sufficient to keep spammers out because most don't bother to come back after such a waiting time.
If I'm totally brain-crapping right now, correct me.
I don't think I have ever heard about them, but I've only been on this forum as long as I have had this account so it could have been a thing for all I know.

We could just start doing this again.

Having a 24 hour lurking period has the side effect of driving away people who come just to ask a question like yourself and does very little to get rid of alts or shitposters.
I think it's still a better solution than thinking of all these weird systems to get rid of alts/shitposters. There's zero telling how useful a poster someone will be when registering. Since Facepunch is pretty much Gmod forum #1, there's a great chance someone will register to just ask a question and never come back again. Though I understand you wanna keep posters like the Badage boys out. Smartness works long-term, not short-term.

Hell, the smartness sytem made me go from F to A in English.
Why not make it so you need Steam and Gmod to register?
Why not make it so you need Steam and Gmod to register?
not gmod steam good
You could make Facepunch invite only.
Why not make it so you need Steam and Gmod to register?
They have not only made Garrys mod. http://www.facepunchstudios.com/ By some reason their mobile game and Facewound is gone from their company site.
maybe mini-moderators who can ban people and mow faggots down but in order for their bans to take effect they have to be approved by a normal mod
maybe mini-moderators who can ban people and mow faggots down but in order for their bans to take effect they have to be approved by a normal mod
I was thinking of that and just after a few mini-moderators had banned some one (while not showing how many wants the person banned). Then I reflected for a bit and realized that its the same as the report function and deserve to wear the dunce cap for a while.
Thats how Mods in training worked a while back.
Having a 24 hour lurking period has the side effect of driving away people who come just to ask a question like yourself and does very little to get rid of alts or shitposters.
if they can't wait a day to ask their question they have no business getting an account here
Thats how Mods in training worked a while back.
were, not anymore.
You could make Facepunch invite only.
What a horrible idea
Registration has been closed for about a week. I don't think we need any new members right now.
"Guess what J!NX! We're hiring! Check this out to see if we can give you a job!" Garry can I be your personal manwhore
It's mainly all the spergers that keep re-registering. But this stops the spambots too so it's all good. It's something we need to figure out really. I definitely don't want to charge people to make an account - even though that would solve all the problems. Maybe we need to vet each join somehow.
Make it invitational? You need an invite from an original member?...
autoban has been used in the past, while it made me snigger at times, it didn't work.
I remember someone getting banned for saying "Stick it in her wardrobe."
A problem is that many people want to create accounts just to request Gmod support, and restricting registration would make it harder for these people to get help.
We could have a forum you can access straight away, for gmod related questions, and another for introducing yourself and getting full privileges
