I still really like the idea where golds with 1k+ posts can upvote/downvote new users and get rewarded with boostar credit.
lurk for one week, have a pop up box appear telling the user to write a paragraph and see how they do and if they don't do it, just disable posting rights until they do

voted in gold > paid gold
only true golds like me can vote, also we can vote boostargolds into blue
Cowabanga boostard Gold Membership for Cowabanga

yeah, should be like that
or just have a bunch of mods select out some cool peeps who decide on people
these cool peeps would include people like BDA who is actually a pretty cool peep

Is it really that better than golds voting in blue members?
doesn't seem like it to me
I mean shit, there's practically more golds than blues these days
Is it really that better than golds voting in blue members?

It isn't, but I was pointing out your elitism (or completely irrelevant point). The point of making it gold is because it can work as a form of an idiot filter, kind of. Just think of it as paid accounts and how it mows down idiots, instead of making it that, you can give it an advantage of upvoting/downvoting.

It's not an irrelevent point because then you have gold to blue elitism, just like you would have gold to boostar gold elitism.
I think we should instead have hidden respected members and mods vote people in. otherwise people will simply act like golds act "Better than every blue member" because they can vote people into the forums/etc. Golds should only be voted into gold via other golds as well (More fucking golds than anyone really).
Glorious red member master race the one true race
The idea isn't new though, I think back years ago the argument against this was people signing up for immediate help for let's say gmod for example. But w/e give it a shot
why not have it so that the only the gmod support forums are open to you on registration with everything else on a week-long posting lock
Except why is having a gold username and animated avatars something to be superior or elitist about? Or are we that desperate to find something that we can say "I am better than thou" about?
a forum i know of has it simple, there's a new members section with new members threads. they can post questions, work they've done stuff like that. if they prove to be a good poster, they get approved and get a full account. people can ask questions about gmod, stick a captcha in there for good measure, and they can show they give a shit about community or whatnot.
I like this
We would need to bring back the big flashing "you are going to get banned" though in that subforum
Except why is having a gold username and animated avatars something to be superior or elitist about? Or are we that desperate to find something that we can say "I am better than thou" about?
IMHO gold memberships only cool for the animated avatars, if you're paying for gold for the avatars or just to donate then really who gives a shit.
I think a modification of the lurk delay would help.
Basically, you can start 1 thread or make one post for one week until the normal privileges are in effect.
Also there has to be some way to detect if a person has been hacked, since my previous account had been jacked by someone else for the course of 6 MONTHS before I realized it.

if someone is seriously bitching about paid gold and not being sarcastic in the non gold section then they should probably jump off a cliff
that's like bitching about 07er's even though they are butt bandits[sp]no no plz don't hit be 05ers[/sp]

It isn't Facepunch's job to do account security for you
thats your job

My faith in humanity has been slightly restored.
-sniphitthefuckingreplybutton-
make people sign up as a guest at first so they can access the gmod specific content, then when they gain a certain amount of posts and reputation they unlock the other forums
could have a weekly vote to determine members granted with access
I definitely don't want to charge people to make an account - even though that would solve all the problems. Maybe we need to vet each join somehow.
Why not? It could just be $1 or something.
Just because you have money and are willing to pay to have an account doesn't mean you would make a better member of the community than someone who doesn't want/can't pay a signup fee.
also shadez 12,666th post
Why not? It could just be $1 or something.
Except that will just turn away everyone.
There are a million other forums that are equally sized or larger than FP that you can sign up for free for.
[editline]18th February 2013[/editline]
Why go to one that charges money to sign up for when I can go to a shitload of other ones for free.
If I had to go through a "card check" to sign up for an internet forum I would just go "fuck it" and go somewhere else. It's like porn sites that require cards to "verify your age." It's probably a scam and I can get the same content somewhere else.
Aww, I already had the button made. :v:

I like the sub-blue member forum idea. They can read all other posts, but can only post in the gmod support, the raise to blue appeal forum, and a sub-blue talk forum that all members can access.
But then who raises them to blue?
votes, or mods?
It isn't Facepunch's job to do account security for you

Normally I would agree with you but considering Facepunch has no convenient way of logging out it is hardly a persons fault if someone accesses their account from their own computer without permission.

put a password on your computer,
clear cookies,
use incognito mode
it really isn't that hard if someone in your house is being dickish
(also because "im sorry i shitposted i got hacked honest")
But then who raises them to blue?

Could be a combination of both, Like how reports alert a mod to someone breaking the rules, normal members approve a sub-blue and when they have reached a certain number of approvals a mod is notified and makes the decision.

I'm aware there are ways around it, it is just unnecessarily inconvenient. Especially if you are using a shared computer or the other person is usually trustworthy. This is really the place to discuss it though so lets move on.

Here's my theory:
Garry didn't bother to add a logout button in the site's theme because he wanted to mow down alts as possible as he can, and it did work with some people from what I've seen of some RC threads.

That is what I figured too, it just seems like a bit of a heavy handed solution.
