To everyone who is suggesting new members only be allowed to post in the gmod related area first, what about people that sign up to Facepunch and don't play gmod?
I signed up because my brother was a member and so I used to lurk and found I enjoyed the forum and the community in general, I've never even played gmod, just used to laugh at the shit my brother did in it.
Heck I convinced a friend to sign up because she likes SH and the Creationism Corner.
Edit: I like the idea of a section for new members only to post and be judged by others.
I like the sub-blue member forum idea. They can read all other posts, but can only post in the gmod support, the raise to blue appeal forum, and a sub-blue talk forum that all members can access.
what makes you think all new members come here for gmod support
this is the 13th largest forum in the world and i seriously doubt most join to talk about gmod
^ yep, and to any smartass who's going to counter that using the "big forums database" site thingy, they're using the old facepunch domain so the counters haven't updated since 2009.
by users we are 21st
checked alexa to see if they do type of sites ranking, they don't but we got this gem
"Based on internet averages, facepunch.com is visited more frequently by males who are in the age range 18-24, have no children, have no college education and browse this site from home."
Why not? It could just be $1 or something.
Garry made some offsite support thingies.
Problem: Shit tons of shit posters joining to make Facepunch shit. Right?
Problem 2: We are the official support community for Garry's Mod.
Solution: Allow new users to ONLY post in the Garry's Mod Sections until they've been either:-
a- Approved as a good user by a moderator
b- Got 200 posts
Additional: Don't let them buy gold either.

Big difference between paying to access an entire forum to post in and buying gold to have animated avatars and access to a special subforum inside a free to access forum.
Plus GMF is pretty terrible. Smart golds don't go there :v:

crypto's idea for registration
so gray member forum, get enough positive reports by users, mods make you blue, boostar is disabled while gray
Honestly the anti-refugee camp seems like the best idea to me
Because that means if I had a quick gmod support question I could just straight up post it right there and maybe get an answer from a mod or a gold member.
If I had a more detailed question and/or wanted to join facepunch I could make an appeal which could simply get voted (agree or disagree, mods are worth X5 that of a gold member). If you get 30 agrees first you are allowed full access on the fourms. If you get 30 disagrees first you are immediately banned for 7 days and can choose to try again in a week. Mods can optionally over-write the ban (like they can already) if they felt like it was uncalled for. Gold members that exploit this and just spam-vote get perma'd. Gold members that reply non-constructively to the thread that the person makes (if they are just asking a question and you don't try and answer, if they make an appeal to join and you don't address the application constructively, etc) get perma'd.
Best way to go about this would be to "hire" 3 new mods that have moderator access to only those fourms to handle registration only. They can't get boostar tips, since they aren't moderating the -actual- forums. On top of this, current moderators can interact with this forum too but obviously they won't really be expected to keep an eye on it (as thats what the 3 new mods would do).
I just hate the idea of a "lurk" period for several reasons:
1. I joined facepunch to get an answer to a gmod question. I'd hate to have to wait a week or so after joining just to be able to ask when I KNOW I'm a legitimate poster.
2. It doesn't actually solve anything, it just delays it by about a week. Alt spamming is still possible, spambots are possible (though likely will be twarted by this), etc.
I like the idea of an anti-refugee camp just because it would let me ask a question without having to wait 48 hours for my account to be approved or some shit, or have to lurk for 7 days, etc. I could also be able to join the fourms to ask a more detailed question, or simply join the community, much quicker than manual moderator approval or a lurk time by making a constructive application thread (because lets face it, there are gold members/mods active on FP 24/7).
----------------------
The only thing we would need to do this:
1. The fourm itself is made. I imagine this is pretty easy to do.
2. Three new (trusted, ideally older members who make constructive posts) moderators are appointed, that only moderate and look over this forum, but otherwise are just normal members everywhere else. As such they get no boostar benefits.
3. A system put in place that makes it so users get auto-approved or auto-banned for 7 days depending on if they get 30 agree ratings or disagree ratings by moderators (worth 5X) or gold members. This means its pretty hands-off and you don't have to worry about babysitting this forum. Because your gold members are bored, want to feel like constructive members (and the ones that don't... get banned!) and as such you literally have an army of people who can do the work for you. The 3 new moderators are there to make sure the gold members (and the new applicants) don't start doing dumb shit.
4. A rules sticky in this fourm, that outlines what gold members should do, what they are allowed to do, and if they don't follow these rules then they get perma-banned. Guidelines on how to reply constructively, etc. New applicants get a different sticky that explains how they should post, if they have a detailed question for a specific section on FP then they need to just do an application to join fully, what makes them a constructive member, etc.
Voting people in or out is dumb because there will always be people who vote yes to everyone or no to everyone for shits.
Smart golds don't buy gold.
I guess everyone who gets gold nowadays is dumb because the only way to get it is to buy it?
5$ or less to register?
I would.

crypto's idea for registration

The main problem I see with the "positive feedback reports" systems is that they sound good on paper, but put into practice, like fucking no-one will put a positive feedback report in, and if they do probably in very rare occasions unless it's a massive obtrusive notice that forces you to do so.
And then you get the elitists/funny guys that will rate everything and everyone no for no reason.
I don't think we should treat FP as some sort of special access club shit. Just makes us looks a whole shitton more assholey.
Best way to combat multiple account holders IMO would be like sign in with steam once (because let's be honest, i'm sure 99% of people on here own a steam account) but the account has to hold some sort of value on it. Like someone bought a couple games on it already. Then in order to make alt accounts you would have to make a new steam account and buy one or two games to make a new account, which the vast majority won't feel like doing.
Voting people in or out is dumb because there will always be people who vote yes to everyone or no to everyone for shits.
Thats why those people get perma'd
It's no different than a gold member popping into refugee camp to make a stupid reply to a ban appeal
It serves a dual purpose really - shitty gold members who spam and aren't actually constructive posters get weeded out, good applicants get weeded in, etc.
I don't know if you can do this in vB, but the ideal solution would be to only allow the user to make one thread and post in it. Ideally after that, you would make it impossible to post in your own thread if it wouldn't automerge (to avoid bumping).

It wouldn't be a special access club, no different than accounts needing manual registration from a moderator, except without needing moderators babysitting the new registrations 24/7, you can let gold members do the bulk of the work for you
You say no one will but the refugee camp works perfectly fine with this. Gold members can post in refugee camp but if they don't do so in a constructive manner they get perma'd. This would be the exact same thing, but with the added caveat that if you just rate spam then all the gold members involved in the spam will be perma'd and/or the mod will just reverse the 7 day auto registration ban.

If you're going to perma people for system abuse you might as well perma people for breaking rules though.
I mean what prominent internet forums let you vote people into membership?

gold members haven't been able to post in the rc for a while
caused too many problems, i think a rating system where it recommends to mods but they still have the final say is better
