I love it, even though it would be better without distortion me thinks.
Nice avatar.

Total bullshit. They've always made great music.

Everyone knows the Beatles were the best when they had beards.
The same is true for all bands, if every member has a beard, it's probably a good album.
Total bullshit. They've always made great music.
up until the hypnotize mesmerize debacle
wow what are you talking about, they both were great albums

are i mean
Regardless as to if hypnotize and mesmerize were good, it was definitely different than their past work.
not compared to the others
massive step down
How has In Flames not been brought up?
Before

After

This is probably the best example of sellouts.

I don't think Weezer "sold out", I think that they're just trying too hard to keep up with the popular trends in music. Some of their songs are still pretty reflective of their oldest stuff, but the latest two albums are really, really.. generic.

They didn't sell out per se. They changed their musical direction. There is a big difference.

exactly
I was really hoping In Flames doesn't come out in this thread but as much as I feared, it did :saddowns:
Selling out in my opinion is signing to a major record label, (they moved from Relapse to Warner)
Warner is a major record label and pays bands big money. That in my opinion is selling out, but obviously by the thread you mean bands that just make music for the money and not for themselves. So I get what you mean.
So bands aren't allowed to be successful? How do you know whether a band records a song "for themselves" or "for money?" You don't know them. It seems like anything you like was done "for themselves" and anything you dislike was done "for the money," and isn't that just a lame way of feeling superior about what music you like?

What are you talking about. I just said there is a difference between "selling out" and selling out dude.
Some bands do it for the money and ONLY the money, again only some. You don't know which bands do that at all, but there are some who do that.
That's not selling out. That's getting signed.
[editline]15th February 2011[/editline]
I can't see how you could even misconstrue that as selling out, that's just being successful.
Truth be told it pisses me off that it's still very much maligned in the music industry for bands to make money. As soon as bands start talking payment for gigs or putting a fair price on merch they're automatically money grabbing cunts (this is a general complaint not just directed at you Noni). At the end of the day in 90% of cases a band is someone's job, it's only fair they grt a decent wage for it, yet people seem to hate success in music because somehow it cheapens their message or whatever bullshit
I never said selling out was a bad thing, hold your fire dudes. You guys are too quick to judge.
Is there an issue with making music just for money?
No there isn't, it's an honest living.
For some people though (like metallica fans) it's a big disappointment. I don't have anything against selling out so don't get me wrong.
Is there an issue with making music just for money?
Not really.
Generally music made just for money ends up being sort of meh.
I never said selling out was a bad thing, hold your fire dudes. You guys are too quick to judge.
I wasn't judging. I was making a point regarding the actual idea of selling out. I said in my post that I wasn't purely directing my annoyance at you and I stand by that, but using a term like "selling out" (which has VERY negative connotations) to describe getting signed is honestly asking for trouble.
My bad if it sounded like I was having a rage at you
Not really.

Ever listened to classical?
Mastodon are a good example of selling out.
I'm pretty sure everyone in the music forums agree that even after they signed with a larger record label they got even better at what they did.
Just listen to Crack the Skye.
Selling out is a terrible term to use. They didn't sell out. They didn't alter their sound to make more money. They got signed to a major label.
Selling out is a terrible term to use. They didn't sell out. They didn't alter their sound to make more money. They got signed to a major label.
I still think you're misunderstanding. Does selling out have to mean they altered there sound to make more money? If you'd rather me used got signed to a major record label then I will, but I was just trying to give an example of "good selling out".
Selling out doesn't have to be bad man.
Selling out has incredibly negative connotations and is very misleading. Selling out has effectively come to mean changing your sound to make money, and is already heavily overused as it is. To use it to apply to bands who by your own admission haven't is just muddying the waters further and continues it's usage despite it being incredibly stupid
Yeah, it sounds like you're trying to make up a new definition of "selling out"
Ok I understand what you mean then, I guess I was just looking at things wrong
Ever listened to classical?
Some. Not my favourite genre of music, not bad, not too good, just average to my tastes.
I hate this idea that classical music = good and if you don't like it you're musically ignorant. It is a genre that is just ok to me.
I was more referring to classical music since 90% of it was written on commission for whoever could pay :v:

Yes, that IS what selling out means. You've got the definition of the word wrong
Selling out is compromising your own values or integrity just for money or success.
Getting signed to a major label or changing your style because you feel like it isn't selling out. Changing your style just for the money is selling out.
