Maybe he was calling his parents ignorant, and they happened to atheist, or maybe I'm reading it wrong.
Anyway, for what the afterlife is like, refer to American Beauty
In my opinion, people think about this too much. Every part of your body stops and then you are no longer alive. It's not nothingness, not like a dreamless sleep or whatever, it's simply nothing. It's a lack of life, not an afterlife. Same nothing that a bug experiences after you crush it's brain, same nothing that a rock experiences when it's being a rock. If you ask me, you aren't human anymore, you're a corpse.
I'm having trouble articulating this, but I like to think about it as if once I am dead, everything ceases to exist. And that is why my life goal is to achieve immortality.
Exactly. The truly rational path is agnosticism because as of now, we don't have the means to prove or disprove the existence of a higher power. That goes for the afterlife, too.
I've seen this argument so many times and it pisses me off every time I see it. I couldn't disagree more. I'd say the truly rational path is to make no assumptions without proof. And "god doesn't exist" is not applicable as an assumption here, because then you would have to be open minded to the possibility that Miss Ornith O. Fobe is right and the birds ARE plotting to wipe out the human race. My rule of thumb: If the idea came from a living being, there is no reason to believe in it. In other words, if you cannot prove it, assume that there is a lack of it entirely until proven otherwise.
Thinking about this is actually confusing me, going to try to give an example.
Alright, so... Okay you got this box, right? That box is right infront of you on a table. Is there something in it? Well, I suppose we need details on this box. It didn't come from anywhere. It wasn't delivered. This box is not of supernatural origin; no sentience made this box exist. The box just exists. The same way reality, or even existence exists. Is it hollow? Well, it's a box, you know it's a box, so it must be. And that's what you know. It's a box. Is there something inside? You don't know. But why would there be? It's just a box. Nobody said anything about there being anything inside of it. Why would you accuse this box of having contents? All you can see is a box. It's hollow, it could have something in it. It could have a muffin in it. Or a dimensional rift. But you'll only ever know that there's a box. You could shake it, but you don't hear or feel anything. You can't open it. So it's rational to assume that it is empty. Maybe you will find out after you die, after all maybe the contents are too light and soft to feel or hear. But you've never seen a sentient person that has died. But what if you just can't see them because they are invisible? Maybe there are also massive black cocks on the table beside the box that are invisible? Who knows!
In the end, you don't have any evidence. There is only the box[sp], he is our shield and protector[/sp]. The box is all you know of, the box is all you can see. If there is anything inside of the box, it makes no noise, it has no weight, it has no scent. So in my opinion, the rational thing to do is to assume that the box is empty.
Anyways, in the very end, it's still a confusing subject that I don't think any of us will ever understand, and this could just be considered as my opinion. If you disagree with me, so be it. But don't rate me dumb. Then I'll think it's because I talked about a box.
I'm not comparing God to a penis, nor was he. He was simply giving an example close to the subject matter. You can't see/feel/hear God, yet we believe in him. Just like an ethereal penis.
GOD DAMN IT please don't compare God to a penis

Nice, degenerate into inarticulate insults and attacks on character, do us all a favor and rethink your purpose in life - it's not to be a comedian.

all of you atheists just seem like dickjerks who want to knock down anyone who has some faith.
all of you atheists just seem like dickjerks who want to knock down anyone who has some faith.
Faith doesn't have to be in a god.
We're not trying to knock anyone down, but knock some sense into people. I believe that religion and faith was useful in the past, but only because it gave people morals and a reason to live. Nowadays we don't need it because people should know how to act and react about situations, we also live so that we can help improve the lives of people around us and for those in the future.
Religion was just an easy way to explain something that is unexplained, it should have been in the past by now as there are greater alternatives to discovering the origins and futures of the universe.
You seem to treat religion like a phase... I don't know. Just bothers me.
To be honest that's what i will find out when i die. If it's oblivion then meh atleast i'll see what non-existance looks like.
all of you atheists just seem like dickjerks who want to knock down anyone who has some faith.
Well good job generalizing. 90% of atheists don't care what you believe and the majority of the 10 percent only care if it effects other people or like debating about faith the same way people debate about anything on the internet.
It's just the loud minority, as always.
Sorry Louie, but I can't take you seriously when you're directly disobeying some of the most well know commandments from "God" in this thread alone. Do you really think anyone will listen to your side of this "argument" when you aren't even upholding some of the principal teachings of the Bible and Jesus Christ? Honestly sounds pretty hypocritical to me. I'm fine with people having whatever faith they want. It's their own private thing, but if you're going to try and argue it to people, especially to Facepunch, then you should at least have the decency to uphold your faith and abide by it. Otherwise you look like a complete hypocrite. It's hilarious to watch you argue for your Religion when you're directly disobeying commandments from your "Father" and even taking his name in vein. Can you think before you post?
Yeah, that sgt. needs to die. Giving people as a whole a bad name. Burn in hell.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. [Mark 12:30-31]
and
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. [Matthew 7:1-5]

I'm not a perfect christian I'm sorry. It's hard sometimes to stay true when people get me so angry. We're all human, right?

Actually, Louie is Protestant, he doesn't interpret the bible in the same way you do.
I'm not a perfect christian I'm sorry. It's hard sometimes to stay true when people get me so angry. We're all human, right?
It's ok. I just think it's a little silly to see you stoop to something like that. Well, us Facepunch atheists can be irritating. Can't we?
I hope that when we die, and I say this as a Christian, that the afterlife is like what's described in this wonderful novel:

Even if you don't believe in the afterlife, this book is still a wonderful read.
I posted a video on the "Theories on Death." Thread in Mass Debate and that I believe that you have a spirit after death.
I believe that everyone has a soul and all that. I also think we go to the same place after we die. First you go to a transitional plane, where you relive all of your experiences. You learn from every mistake you've made, as in learning what you did wrong and what you should have done, until you have learned all you can. This transitional plane is between the physical world and the Afterlife, and spirits there can come back as ghosts. Once you have learned from all of your mistakes then you move onto the afterlife, which is place that can be shaped by your own thoughts. So if you believed that you would go to Heaven, you would see Heaven. Those here of a more logical mindset may see a favorite area, like their home, or a childhood hide out. Then you can be reincarnated if you choose to.
And if I'm wrong, meh oh well. I live without regrets.
no souls
Nothing.
I want to turn into a poltergeist and proceed to creep the fuck out of people and laugh at the people trying to find a natural cause
and then haunt them too
just like stalker

I also believe we live our lives over and over again. Like in repeat or thirdperson.
