Chuck Berry.
Seriously, despite what he has done for rock n' roll, no one knows who he is where I live.
I think most people have heard of him (probably because of Back to the Future).
Mark Knopfler
(His new solo career is very good but less people have heard his latest music)
Edit:
Atleast nobody mentionned Buckethead. He's fucking amazing don't get me wrong, probably my favorite.
But people always talk about him as if he was completely unknown. He's getting some recognition now.
Michael Romeo is pretty unheard of but to those who know him he's a true god. Same goes for Petrucci.
Hugh Edward Thomasson Jr. from the Outlaws.
He wrote Green Grass and High Tides.
I put a buckethead song on a video I made and people always said "WHY DID YOU PUT A PORNO THEME FOR THE MUSIC FOR AMERICA WILL BEAT YOUR ASS WE RULE"
Robby Krieger

And Alex Lifeson. He's the least famous because he isn't the best at what he does, like Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. But nonetheless, an amazing guitar player.
Chuck Schuldiner from Death.
Edit:
My favorite Death song.
Zombie Ritual

Fuck i was gonna say his name until i saw your post
contribution for Chuck

Albert King? Nobody knows who he was here either. People need to browse Wikipedia more.
Thomas Erak, people say he's a guitar wanker when he's a genious. :sigh:
Edit:
and Randy Rhoads.
Steve Howe from Yes...
Yea, Mood for a Day!
Edit:
Jethro Tull, right?
I wouldn't say Howe is underrated, he is just not as well known as e.g. Jimmy Page or who ever. I find Brian May of Queen very much underrated, he is great. Same for Steve Hackett from (early) Genesis.
Return of the Giant Hogweed intro mesmerizes me.
Also, Robert Fripp. Saw him in concert last night with King Crimson.

I'd have to say Robert Fripp is pretty highly regarded, I don't know.
Me.
Message too short.
Herman Li.
Naw, the lead guitarist in Shinedown.
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Kirk Hammett is not over rated... yet again he is over rated. But he can still kick Dave Mustaines ass anyday. Also Dave Mustaine is under rated but not as good Kirk. In my opinion.
Kirk Hammet is way over rated. Dave Mustaine would rape Kirk Hammet so hard I can't even begin to imagine.
Neil Young.
Dimebag Darrell! You know how many people don't know about his awesomeness? Pretty much every one in my Generation, they'll pick Eddie Van Halen... instead.
Edit:
Herman Li.
Don't do that! That scared the SHIT out of me.

I agree with this post.
I think Dick Dale goes pretty underrated.

Shitty quality video but it still sounds good.
Alex Lifeson.
A lot of people just hate the dude.
Yeah he's really good, but he either doesn't get credit, or Neil steals his thunder, but really all of the members are good, Geddy's an excellent bassist and vocalist, and you can't question Neil's talent.

Alex Lifeson in his older years. Listen to both solo's.
Herman Li.
I actually think he's a bit underrated - among certain groups. There are tons of people who go "Herman Li is the best guitarist ever!!" and because of that, "cool people" (like us) totally diss him.
- I think Herman Li is a great guitarist.
- You're an idiot and GH sucks. *Graspop 2005*
Don't get me wrong. He is not the best guitarist ever, but he's certainly not as bad as some people here claim.
Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, and Alex Lifeson.
Really I don't have much to say about them as those who don't know them are sad, sad individuals.
If randy rhodes was still alive, he'd be the best guitarist alive.
Also
John 5
Alexi Laiho
Mikael Amott
Mikael Akerfeldt
and if you know Slipknot, Mick Thompson. Yes, he is actually a good guitarist, not on the level of these other guys, but he is far better than he has ever been given credit for.
If randy rhodes was still alive, he'd be the best guitarist alive.
Jesus H. Motherfucking Christ, why can nobody spell Randy's name properly?
Jesus H. Motherfucking Christ, why can nobody spell Randy's name properly?
Because I'm lazy and I suck at spelling occasionly, I do know how it's spelt, I just spell badly from time to time, especially with names.
Names are dificult to spell unless you know the origin of the name, and even then it can be difficult due to the fact that many families, in an attempt to be unique change the spelling anyways.

No... I'd say he's given just about as much credit as he deserves. (Not much.)
Please come here to contribute. Your last two posts had a negative influence on the thread. You said your under rated, post us a video please, or post another underrated guitarist. Bassists count too.
If you guys know Shawn Starsky, I'm having you over for dinner.

I don't know the origin of the name but at least I can spell it. You might think they're difficult to spell because you can't spell yourself.
Kaki King
Joe Walsh.
Bradley Noell & Randy Rhoads
buckethead.
So much better than dragonforce.
