Spelling is something that you either excell at or don't. It does not help that the first english dictionary was mainly compiled by a mad dog killer. To add to that, english uses some of the most absurd grammatical rules, and it is not my primary language thank you very much.
To add to the list, Nancy Wilson
Tom Morello
You're crazy. The most underrated is undoubtedly Larry LaLonde.
Chris Squire of Yes is a very good bassist. Basically the entire group consists of virtuosos. (Close to the Edge era)
Please come here to contribute. Your last two posts had a negative influence on the thread. You said your under rated, post us a video please, or post another underrated guitarist. Bassists count too.
If you guys know Shawn Starsky, I'm having you over for dinner.
If I don't think someone's underrated I'm going to let you know.
I was joking about myself, but if you're still interested I did make a thread with a video of me playing a song some time ago.
Almost all great bassists are underrated, except for maybe Les Claypool and Geddy Lee. My personal favorite bassist is Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne.
This isn't his best work (still good) but it's the best video I can find of just him.

I think he really gets overlooked due to being the bassist of a semi-mainstream metal band, but this and some of his other work is simply amazing.
Chuck Schuldiner from Death.
Edit:
My favorite Death song.
Zombie Ritual

Agreed man! great song, great band!
Rivers Cuomo.
Alex Lifeson.
A lot of people just hate the dude.
Why would you want to hate him? I don't know much of Rush yet (only got Moving Pictures and A Farewell to Kings) but his guitar playing, especially on the longer tracks, is quite cool.
Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Peter Lindgren
Derek trucks hes great and almost no one I ask knows who he is.

Thomas Erak for sure. Not only is he a fucking crazy guitarist, half the time he's singing at the same time.
Bumblefoot, aka Ron Thal.

I love you for mentioning Ryan!

Isn't he dreamy?
I think there are MANY more overrated guitarists than underrated ones.
Personally, I think the guitar itself is a grossly overrated instrument.
Say what you will, but the guitar is such a versatile instrument. There are quite a few overrated guitarists out there, but that is not the point of this thread. I was planning on starting such a thread, but I felt too many people would get into arguements over such a topic, since overrated implies negativity. You're welcome to start one if you wish.
You're welcome to start one if you wish.
Nah, I won't. And I do actually play the guitar as well as a plethora of other instruments. For me, it's really not that great. It's kinda fun to play, and pretty easy too, but nothing to obsess over.
I much prefer the fiddle, myself.
As do I. I prefer the Mandolin, Banjo, and Dulcimer. Fiddling is wonderfull. My brother and my grandfather got into that music. Reminds me of my younger days, but like I said, this is not the thread to discuss such things.
On another note: Shawn Starsky is from Jason Ricci and New Blood. A wonderful band to see live if they swing by your neighborhood. So much energy, and so entertaining.
Mike Akerfeldt is definitely overrated, also Michael Amott... he's fucking amazing.. personally, i think every arch enemy album with angela is Pure GOLD
We are not talking about overrated guitarists, we are talking about underrated guitarists.

Buckethead is so awesome.
Alex Lifeson.

He's just overshadowed by Geddy Lee and Neil Peart
And I'd add Mark Knopfler to the list too...
Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Oh my god agreed. He is so musical in the way he plays. And very technically good as well.
Steven Wilson - Porcupine Tree
John Wesley - Porcupine Tree
Piotr Grudzinski - Riverside
Alex Lifeson - Rush
Flynn Gower - Cog

It's funny because Kirk Hammet is actually pretty crap compared to many other guitarists out there
Dylan Ruskin the dude who plays for brain drill.
Patrick Lachman for Diesel machine.
Both fucking awesome, and also Ivan Munguia the bassist for brain drill, the guy is fucking amazing.
And Devin Townsend
Steve Howe. My favorite guitarist.
You know what, im going to mention bassist sent from the gods. Carlos Dengler.

Could make it big if he could ever be arsed.
Some old videos (about 2-3 years old)

And that's all I've got really, he writes songs constantly but never records them.
He had a manager at one point, free recording studio and everything, he just never used it.
He went to an interview to do music at college and accidentally played the piece that they set as the final exam perfectly, they told him he would pass just by entering the course.
He used to have a myspace where he put all the midi songs he'd written but I forget where it is.
I think buckethead is overrated. I think everyone just likes him because he's a massive wierdo.

I dunno, Jordan was a pretty awesome just because it was random notes slammed together that somehow sounded like a song.
