I'm thinking about joining the army (US) as a 68W. Should I do so even if I don't plan on continuing in the medical field once I'm out? [editline]28th July 2012[/editline] Kinda feels like what I learned would be wasted.
you dont really get much beside an emt basic but its really up to you

If you want to just stick your dick into the Army and pull out immediately just do Infantry.
I strongly advise against going into the Infantry unless that's absolutely 100% what you want to do. Unless of course, going on ruck marches, going into the field every other week and crawling in the mud is your idea of fun. There are waaaay better mos's that you can choose that won't make your life a living hell for the four years that you're in, and possibly provide some training for a civilian job once you get out.
Comonnn they make films about my mos.
The Mos' i'm thinking of trying to get into for the Canadian Forces are either Boatswain or Naval Electronic Sensor Operator if I decided to go Navy, Vehicle Tech, Infantryman or Artillery Soldier if I decided to go the Army rout. Also, in terms of physical fitness with getting prepared for basic, would a martial arts course like Krav Maga or what have you be useful?
Comonnn they make films about my mos.
I wasn't trying to diss the Infantry. I've got respect for what you guys do :v: I know some 11B's that absolutely love it, but I've too many 11B's that wish they had another mos. Usually those people only picked the infantry because they didn't know what infantry was, or they thought it would be like call of duty and wound up severely disappointed.

But you'll get way more training and medical experience going Corpsman. If you want to do that hoorah gungho shit you can be an 8404 corpsman (medic with marines)
Just passed Phase One of EOD training here at Fort Lee in the Army. Onto Eglin AFB within the next 12 days to get through the next 29 weeks. If anyone has any general questions about the program I'd love to help you out. When I was looking into it, it was a BITCH to find info so I figured I'd pay it forward. Also I agree with InvaderNouga. Medical, go Navy. I wish I would have known about the Navy EOD program before I enlisted but hey, I'm still happy with it.
Some of the smartest kids I know plan to go into the military, these are kids with GPA's that make a 4.0 look like nothing. As G3rman said, soldiers can be scholarly.
Not to mention Academy graduates, that shit is hard. Speaking of which, anyone planning to apply or is going to one of the service academies? I'm sending my preliminary to the USNA early 2013.
What kind of hard are we talking about?
Stellar GPA, recommendation by a senator, good athletic abilities, and multiple other skills to even be considered to be allowed in. And then you have to survive one of the most rigorous college courses in the U.S if not the world and boot-camp rolled in to one.
They were very sexy until we stopped rolling sleeves...
army and airforce have had its uniform disaster (navy averted it. fuckers) its time for the marines to have one
Why can't the fucking Army have pointy tips on their covers. SO JEALOUS.

How would a career with a US gov organization (FBI,NSA) look after 4 years being an active duty marine? I'm interested in the computer side of things and would like to hopefully work as a tech guy for some big agency. I know I would need a college degree pertaining to computers. I don't think I would have enough time to get one while on active duty.. If I don't then I plan to continue to finish my degree after service. I depped in in April but I don't have my mos selected yet. I definitely want to be a marine. I'd rather not choose infantry, but something tech-oriented. Can anyone give me insight on how I should plan my future for the career that I want? Hopefully you guys now have a general idea.

And those government jobs should look upon you with some favor, just throw your DD-214 (Military equivalent of a high school transcript) at any of them.

Scheduled to take the Aviation Selection Test Battery on August 16th. I've been studying my ass off for the previous two months... However, any words of advice for taking a military assessment test?
It's not even that hard.
