• Thinking of Joining the Military? V2

Well I could be making a shitload more in the civilian world right now (six figures easily). Satcom operators have always been hard to come by in the Army because contractors pay them sooo much more and are constantly recruiting 25S's out of the Army. Only a handful of other MOS's receive bonuses like we do (like EOD).
We just had our 40k re-enlistment bonus taken away from us a few weeks ago. Feels bad man.
rip
Can one get by on E-3 pay, or is it a struggle?
Can one get by on E-3 pay, or is it a struggle?
It's never a struggle to live in the military, everything you need for subsistence is provided to you (assuming you're not deployed to a combat zone/shitty place)
I am an E-3 and I am doing great. The military provides everything for lower enlisted. If you are smart with your money you will do great.
So sad. I wanna join but I have scoliosis and it's over the limit. so jelly of you guys
How hard is the transition from civilian life to military life?
How hard is the transition from civilian life to military life?
It really depends upon you. You can make it easy or hard. You just have to go with the flow and be adaptable. Just be ready for a highly organized and structured environment.
I, along with the other like 200 people they pushed into F-15/A-10/U-2 Avionics maintainers ruined our enlistment bonus all the way to 0. Really though I didn't bother with any of the threads but after having 3 of my 4 years in the Air Force I can say this. Don't sign for 6 unless you're absolutely sure you can put up with 2 years of BS. I'm reenlisting, but I've been told countless times by people I'm lucky for just having the option to get out.
You listed my two favorite aircraft in our inventory: F-15 and A-10. If I couldn't do AWACS or somwething in an airborne aircraft, I would love to do work on either of those airframes. Is tech school for maintenance fun or hard?

He said Avionics maintainer. That is quite different than being a crew chief. Avionics maintainers jobs suck extremely hard. Trust me, you don't want to deal with avionics. I am a crew chief for OH-58D's, the second smallest helicopter in the Army inventory, and my sister MOS, 15J (OH-58D Avionics/Electrical/Armament maintainer), has enough problems with it.
yo skeea return to the real world soon ok

Avionics work comes and goes, cold weather brings hydraulic issues, hot weather brings cooling unit failures to the light, but crew chiefs are broke every day without fail.

Our helicopter is so small that it never goes into phase. Instead, we have progressive phase maintenance which means that every 40 flight hours there is a list of inspections to do, and there are 15 lists of inspections, and when you complete one PPM list it will go automatically to the next one to complete in 40 flight hours. It gives us extreme flexibility. Also, if we work really fast and get every bit of maintenance that is needed done that day we can go home when the work is done.
Update from Phase II EOD School. My mind is fucking melting.
Well guys, leaving tomorrow for glorious Afghanistan. I will try to post along the way, as we are making a few stops.

Hey thread, I've been thinking about joining the US military! I've kind of lacked the inspiration and initiative to do much with my life, but I really think that the military would be a solid way to just improve me as a person. It seems like something that I can't back down from or fluke out once I've started, something that'll get me in shape both physically and mentally, which is really what I feel I need most now. My only major worry is that I've got a bit of a long-running project going with some of my friends. I'm really not very sure how recruit training and everything works, but I think I'd be seriously discouraged if I had to go super extended periods of time without contact with them and access to a computer to work. I don't really have my eyes set on anything in particular, nor is the military my only or even top option, so I'm really open to advice and suggestions.
What country are you from?
whoops. united states
whoops. united states
Okay well if you decide to join a branch, make sure to run everyday. Every. Day.
I have fallen arches, would I ever be able to join any branch of the Military?
Completed the first leg of travel and we are currently picking up about 30 Marines. The second leg is going to be extremely long ugh.
Got some cute ROTC orientation next week. Time to don my Army PTs and be a total douche and brag about how I'm in the infantry. [sp]kidding[/sp]

Been overseas for about a day now. It hasn't been bad at all, though it can get boring. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated.
