Don't join the military please. I'd rather not have my tax dollars go to a bunch of corporate plebe's and dumb rednecks who think they'll get into Harvard because they shot a bunch of confused malnourished brown people attempting to defend their family from the alien invaders.

Uhh, careful on that one. If i remember right, theres two different types of gum in the mre. One of them is the caffienated type.

Thanks for telling us

There's nothing special about the gum. It's normal gum used to help clean your teeth while you're in the field.

That is just a rumor coming from the Private News Network. It is actually Xylitol gum which, as UncleJimmema said, cleans your teeth.
Did anyone have a moment of doubt if joining was the right thing to do?
Because I am having some, even though it is something i REALLY want to accomplish in my life.
All of us have that moment. However, what you do after you reach it is far more important. I reached that point in AIT when some major bullshit was happening. I chose just to grit my teeth and drive on. I am glad I did, I am a lot happier now and earning fat deployment checks.
Thank you all for the replies and for keeping this thread alive. Even though I was a good student in high school, and it has only been a few weeks, I'm not sure how I like college. This thread gives me things to think about and consider when taking the next step in life.

Xylitol is a laxative if you take enough
SOLUTION: DON'T SWALLOW GUM
SOLUTION: DON'T SWALLOW GUM
Your saliva is going to mix with the stuff in the gum, and you'll swallow the saliva, and that's how it works. You don't have to actually swallow the gum for the effects to take place.

So is any other sugar alcohol. The amount in the gum wont do it. I've watched a kid at boot camp chomp on 30 packs of the gum before (he was being disciplined, long story) and that wasn't enough.
MRE's are made to constipate you so you don't have to take a shit in the middle of combat.

I assume the amount of xylitol is different here then; because you could eat a packet of gum here and get it
eat gum
or chew gum
eat gum

chew gum
About 3-4 pieces of gum in your mouth would do it

Well seeing as I just ate nothing but MRE (including the gum, which now only comes in cinnamon) for a week straight starting August 27th and I just had my mega MRE shit it would seem so.
Allow Terminal Lance to enlighten you

I clog the toilet on a daily basis taking giant shits the size of a small new born ( i have gotten scary good with using a plunger).
So I feel if i enlist, there would be some serious problems concerning plumbing and MRE constipation.

Ha, I love that comic. Yeah, I remember MREs got me to hold my shit for a day or two, but when it came, it blew....Hard. Real Hard. Literally, peeing out of my asshole.

Once you get into a cycle of eating them it's not uncommon to poop once every week or two.
im at ft. lee doing AIT atm trying to get into airborne etc.
for anyone going to join regular army/reserves i can answer quite a bit of questions
Not sure if POGs can still shoot for airborne.
Some of the comments worry me here. Joining the military won't give your life purpose if you feel you don't have it now. The western powers are locked in conflict with an unseen enemy that just wants them out of their country and the bodies will keep coming back until the forces leave.
I'm not dumping this to debate, troll or get banned but please stay out of the forces because your lives are much more valuable than the so called causes they are told they are fighting for. For those who are already part of the military, please stay alive and remember the things you do will stay with you for the rest of your lives. My comment is meant in the best way.

I don't see any 'joining' in this post, nor do I see any 'thinking.'

What do you mean exactly?
[editline]9th September 2012[/editline]
Any MOS can go airborne. You just have it as part of your enlistment/reeup contract or have orders for an airborne unit. Cadets have the option of going during the summer too. At my AIT we could just ask for it and as long as you could pass the APFT at the 17-21 standards you went to airborne school after AIT and sent straight to an airborne unit.

I can go airborne if I want. Problem is that I am part of the 101st, and getting air assault will be much easier and faster.

I appreciate your attempting to be nice, but for me it did give me purpose. Back when I just graduated High school, I was a punk ass little snot. I had no discipline, no car, no money, and my grades were average.
After I did 4 years in the .mil, I now have discipline, a clear sense of purpose, financial knowledge, over 15 thousand saved up in my bank from deployments, a car, my own apartment and a good paying job. Oh and I got myself an xbox. Not to mention I made some of the best friends I have ever known. Ones who went to hell and back with me.
But yeah, do whatever you want with your life. Just know this: If it weren't for all the fine gentlemen in this thread, the US would draft kids like you out of your little comfy couches and into the war. Remember that.

What do you mean by "getting air assault?" Like being "promoted" to Blackhawks or something?
I know this is an incredibly vague and probably stupid question, but what exactly is American ROTC like? I mean, how exactly does the whole post-secondary education work? Does the military pick my major? Do I have to do PT training every day? How does the training go while I'm going to college? What if I decide to drop out of ROTC midway if I have second thoughts? Is there a penalty? Can I even do it? Once I go in, am I locked in for however long it takes to get through college plus the 4-8 years of required military service? Is it possible to negotiate where I am deployed? Do you just go to one college or do the classes rotate universities based on deployment or something?
I have a lot of other questions, but I'd just like a good overview of it, and I reckon this is the best place to ask it. Can anyone help me out?

On a related note, I know DADT has been repealed, but how does the military seem to treat homosexuality in general?
