• Thinking of Joining the Military? V2

You keep saying college is encouraged. But the quality of college i would say is an important factor. What kind of colleges do you typically get to attend? CC? University? Closest and most convenient one to where you're at?
Any tips on the gas chamber everyone goes through?
Gas chamber was funny as fuck
Don't think being in the national guard won't get you deployed. There's a high probability you'll deploy overseas. Just a heads up.
Oh yeah, I know that. It really is stupid to think you can run away from deployments by joining the National Guard, I wasn't saying that at all. If I were to get deployed I'd get deployed, do what they asked me to do, and be fine with it. I also just like the idea of lending a hand during natural disasters and all of the state-side stuff they do. Anyone have info on 31B? I'm considering MP, but I'm slightly color blind/deficient. I know it limits me but I've heard that some people get into it and some don't. Also air assault school looks fun.
Gas chamber was funny as fuck
That can be misinterpreted.
I guess I'll just have to suck it up and get through it.
I guess I'll just have to suck it up and get through it.
I think if the hundreds of thousands of people before you could get through it (I am low balling that number by a shit ton), chances are you'll get through it.
yeah im going to afghanistan myself since im going to a rapid deployment cav unit in ft. hood texas guaranteed if you're regular army/nasty guard theres like a 80% chance of deploying right now
I called the local Air Force recruiter and had to leave a message. Do you need to set up an appointment?
I called the local Air Force recruiter and had to leave a message. Do you need to set up an appointment?
Nope. When I went to the recruiter, I just walked in there, sat down, and found out everything I needed to know
I called the local Air Force recruiter and had to leave a message. Do you need to set up an appointment?
Deoends. Mine had specific walk in hours, while another local was appointment only. Ill let ya know, they arent really having recruiting issues, so youll probably have to put some effort in to actually meet and start the process.
Ah. Thank you, I still wasn't sure. I am also worried that these budget cuts will affect my desired MOS. The best advice I got was not to go into open field areas, so I really want to get a garunteed job.
Heh, this is kinda funny.
Heh, this is kinda funny.
This happens on a daily basis, especially in places of great boredom such as 29 palms.
Seems like fun except when you have to do shit that is pointless or boring as hell. Can't wait to join in 2 years.
You don't put your life on hold. It is not like you are deployed for all of those six years. You live life normally as a Solider when you are in garrison. I was living it up while I was in the states. Also, you seem to have missed where I said that you can go to college in the military, and that it is highly encouraged, and paid for. As for what to do when you get out; If you were, say, infantry, working security is always a good bet, but you can do other things as well if you kept up with your education. Seriously, you can do anything when you get out. Also, you have a possibility of getting stationed near to where your old life was, though doubtful. Your family moves with you, if you have one of your own. Also, your time in service is only as long as is stated on your contract. It can take up to six years, certainly, but infantry sign for four. If you don't re-up, then that is it.
I feel like my life is on hold. Not able to have any time to do anything I thought I would be able to do. I don't see how I would have time for college at all. 12 hour shifts and all I do is just work and sleep. Just make sure you get a good job or you will have the worst time. In the Air Force don't choose any jobs that require you to work on, near, or about aircraft. Best advice right there.
If you want a guaranteed job, the Army is the only service that does that.
If you plan to join the Air Force while still in high school, you can "enlist" during your junior/early senior year. This will basically give you a guaranteed job that you put on your list of 2+ preferred jobs. If you're waiting for a specific job, then you might have to wait around in DEP for a while to get it. I was in DEP for 2 years before I got the job I wanted, but it's worth not getting a shitty job that I would complain about.

When DEPing into the Army, you can pull a specific job right then and there from ROC and that will be your job. I wanted an aviation job. I waited for 15 series job codes to come up, and yoinked my current job, 15S. In the Air Force you have a top 3. One of my buddies that joined the Air Force really, really wanted, and qualified for, being a linguist. It was in his top 3. Air Force gave him F-22 mechanic. I pulled my job code, and it was written into my contract on DEP. That is what I mean by guaranteed specific job you want.
It wouldn't be bad for me to be in DEP, because I am still in college, and it would give me time to finish my degree/ get into shape. I am also open to many fields, my general rule of thumb is "I would rather wear a flight suit than fatigues.", or "I would like to be in an airborne aircraft." So whether it is AWACS, in-flight refueling, aerial gunnery, or the like, i would be happy. I just don't want to end up being AP or something like that.
One thing that really irritates me about my country's military is the constant budget cuts and size reductions to the general infantry, yet they push SOF massively, making them not just the tip of the spear, but the whole spear.

The reductions have made me seriously consider joining the 160th SOAR.
How does assignment work for officers, usually?
i have a question about joining. (british army that is) i've a criminal record, does this stop me? or are my prospects as limited in the army as they are in what you guys would call "civilian" jobs?
How does assignment work for officers, usually?
It can be confusing. I will ask my commander about it tomorrow to get you an answer.

Few stories from my grandfather back when he was in the Marine corps. 1. The day they we're playing war games. A British Marine Colonel was zig zagging back and forth and said to one of the Marines that he dodged his shots. The Staff Sergeant to the left of my grandfather said "Bullshit you did!" And then punched him in the jaw and knocked him on his ass. My grandfather said the MP's came a running and grabbed him and we're about to take him to the brig, the British Marine got up and said "If a man is willing to hit me to prove that I'm dead then I'm dead." and he got off scott free. 2. Boot camp, My grandfather was in the front with a few other people so he couldn't see the DI. He heard "FORWARD MARCH!" and him and the others started marching just to find out it was a different platoon that was told to start marching... He got shit for that and then my grandfather got kicked in the chest. 3. Guard duty over in 'Nam. Watching over a small town in the middle of the day, miserable as fuck and tired. He looks over to some apartments (whatever Vietnam calls em) where some people come walking out, and then he looks up.... An old and very fat Vietnamese naked woman steps out onto her balcony... He said that was the "Worst" thing he ever saw on guard duty over in Vietnam. 4. Guarding a POW camp. My grandfather was practically a grunt at this time, he was told he had to stay on guard duty all night and to watch out for "Black Bart" he said Black Bart was a rumor that they made up to scare the new guys and say that he'll come up behind you and slit your throat. My grandfather had said that usually the Staff Sergeant comes up from behind and grabs your neck and then says "If I had've been Black Bart you would've been dead soldier!", Anywho back to the story. My grandfather was walking around the perimeter when the guard phone rang, my grandfather picked up the phone and started talking, when all of a sudden he got this gut feeling. He dropped the phone, grabbed the bolt of his M14, He was locked and loaded and he turned around and pointed his rifle right between the Sergeants eyes and stepped forward. My grandfather immediately stood down afterwards and the Sergeant said "Good job kid ( My grandfather was 19 ) you did good, Now pull that fuckin round out of your chamber and get back to work." 5. Dropped off in the middle of nowhere. My grandfather was dropped off with a few others, they we're supposed to be going into a town to check everything out when shit went south, Him and a few others went trekking through the woods back to the LZ where they were supposed to deploy smoke. My grandfather popped 3 smokes and thats about the time the helicopter was coming around, the helicopter didn't see the smoke and started turning around, my grandfather grabbed his little pocket mirror and shined the sunlight into the cockpit of the helicopter and the heli started coming back around to get them. Is there any truth behind these stories? Since my grandfather is not one to lie and never has lied to me or anyone I know, I would say yes these are true stories.
Finally a question for me  It can depend on what it was for, your local careers office will help you through that though.
I'm not sure how it is in Britain, but in America if you have assault on your criminal record, you cannot hold a weapon, which means you cannot be a soldier.
True. The reductions have made me seriously consider joining the 160th SOAR.
I actually know a few guys in that, they say it's the best for aviation, not just in terms of the cool aircraft, but also in terms of the people in it, the leadership etcetera. However selection is pretty tough, apparently. But I know alot about aircrew jobs and can answer a good deal, or find out from friends. About the 3 ya mentioned, ill rattle off a few random ass things. Awacs: That would be either Alpha 3s(airborne mission systems), or alpha 4s(airborne operations). 3s are known affectionately as the geek squad, as their primary duty is to fix the computers and such. They have old ass computers too, a friend told me they were on DOS. One of the longest 3 level courses for aircrew, at roughly 12 weeks. Inflight refueling: They are essentially loadmasters, except they control a long phallic object as well, and will also act as navigator in some situations. They were real backed up for a while, but it seems like its cleared. Aerial gunner: wont exist after jan 1. Its being folded into some mutant hybrid afsc that are alpha 9s, special weapons operator or something like that. Essentially, they're gonna be gunners, flight engineers, loadmasters and i think operations all rolled into some crazy ass jack of all trades job. The reasoning primarily was that a engineer on a helo could do a gunners job, but the gunner couldnt do the engineers job. Same general case with the ac130, except for a loadmaster. Im friends with a few people that came in as gunners and most likely will be some of the first Alpha 9s. Cool thing is, that their afsocs pet 100%. Regardless of what ya go for, I personally think(biased) that aircrew have some of the most awesome jobs in the air force. I personally cant wait till I can start doing mine finally. I will warn you though, that the training is much lengthier then most AF jobs. While they will say up front its only X amount of days, but before youll ever be operational, you have to complete Initial Qualification Training, which will be many months based on air frame and job. My IQT starts in february, and i wont be done till July. You may have missed the curve on aircrew, because they were bringing us in(loads especially) by the assload for a while. Wont hurt to ask though, as the jobs are very often critically manned. And on a random ass note, so far, parachute water survival is fun :D
I picked up a Basic Training for Dummies guide along with alot of math for dummies and science for dummies too. I'm not gonna lie, when it comes to school shit I'm a fucking retard. I'm "homeschooled" and I was always the kid who never did his work and my mom finally gave up on me. Then reality set in this year, I realized I was going to end up living with my parents so I decided on joining the Marine Corps, I realized I was going to have to go to school, learn my shit and get my diploma ( or get my GED and 15 college credits but that shows lack of dedication compared to a diploma ) so now I'm learning all the shit I need to know and I'm going to go to public school and I will graduate and get my diploma. I will go to boot camp when I'm 18 and I will become a United States Marine. My mom is now starting to help me out again and now she really believes in me which gives me hope, my dad believes in me now too and is happy I'll be going to school but he doesn't like the idea of me being a Marine in a combat perspective because he doesn't want me to get hurt or killed which is understandable for a parent but that won't stop me from going.
