For a year. [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline] It is not that we put on a pretty show and Infantry love us because they love things that fly. No, I was using a fucking analogy that you can spend all day being extremely vocal to everyone about how badass tanks are, but they really don't do shit for anyone, while we don't go around to everyone we meet bragging about everything and just performing, that we gain good notoriety for being able to actually do our job and do it well. Don't give me that true brothers in arms bullshit, Aviation, Armored, Infantry, Ordinance, I don't care who you are, you are my fellow brother in arms. I just lost two of them a couple days ago, and it was the worst feeling in my entire life.
And you think my company hasn't lost any? You have a lot of nerve bring that stuff up and what about that killed themselves when my company got back. Don't try bring that into this. Last deployment we lost three great NCO's and a fine soldier in a vehicle rollover into a river only to come home and have another NCO and an Lt. hang himself. btw the one who hung himself use to be my first line... and you have the nerve to bring that up [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline]
if your PT is shitty when you graduate basic training and you are active duty, you are very wrong. im just putting this out there because you'll get out of shape if you don't maintain after basic during that reception period to your AIT, we've lost a few people due to bad PT here at ft. lee i know of. ill just post the 60% standards for the 2-2-2 Pushups - 42 in 2 minutes Situps - 53 in 2 minutes 2 mile run - 15:54 minutes or lower for those of you that are going to enlist and havent even entered basic yet, i'd meet these standards during those few months you're waiting. don't be douchebag like me and waste your waiting period to go back to the MEPS station still all lazy and skinny and lanky and shit before you ship off to fort w/e for BCT.
Yeah you don't want to be that guy who is only just meet the minimum, a good high pt score will help you down the road for a promotion and getting into certain schools.

We all fucking bleed the same, go to the same places, and have all lost comrades in arms. There is no point to dissing fellow Soldiers. Friendly rivalry is one thing. It is quite another to say that they bring shame to their branch and are lower. Bullshit. We all do different jobs, but each job is just as important than the other. One team one fight and all that happy day horseshit. So I still don't want to give up on joining the Marines but I still want to try and go for SFOD-D. I heard that they pull from any branch of the military, is this correct? And if so, as long as I don't do an open contract in the Marines I can pick what job I want?

Also, if you can make the right connections, you might be able to get into contact with a recruiter. Make connections with special ops guys, they might have connections with others. Good luck man.

[editline]4th October 2012[/editline] Also my uncles friend is a recruiter who could pull a few strings when its time to join.
SFOD-D (not called that anymore, Army Compartmented Elements, I think) and DEVGRU (That's not called that anymore, either, you Americans are obsessed with names) select based on applicants, yeah, but the applications are more of an expression of interest than anything else, to say "Hey, I'm keen." They'll only select you if they've noticed you before. Also, the selection for both is a direct competition, not like normal training where you're competing against yourself, you're competing against the top ten percent of the Special Forces crowd.
Those are stilled called a multitude of things, official or otherwise.
I understand that, This is something I am 100% sure it is what I want to do though. I've been forcing myself to go farther than the day before, I think the first day I got started with my pushups I did about 20, the day after that I did 25, and today I'm going to try for 40. [editline]4th October 2012[/editline] I haven't done just pushups though, probably should have mentioned that.

it's pointless arguing over the better branch in the army because we all know that AG is the best s1 4 lyfe

You can think you've got what it takes all you want, but you don't have any idea what it really takes to get there. I've seen some of the most motivated pooles get broke off at boot camp alone, and that's not even the tip of the spear.
Personnel? The horror!
Did anyone join having never been away from home out on your own? If so, how did you handle it and push on through?

I remember when I was a newly minted private, all high speed and moto as all hell, but the realities of service have a way of hitting you. I wanted to join the 160th SOAR, but seeing as how all the specialists in my unit are now promotable, I will be the only junior enlisted guy in my entire troop. The sergeants are all going different places after deployment, so that means we will be getting a lot of new guys. I can't just leave the new soldiers hanging, so I made the hard decision to stay with my unit so I can help train the new guys that are bound to come to the unit after we get back from Afghanistan. Now, this doesn't mean that I am not motivated to do schools, such as Air Assault, door gunner, and possibly Ranger school, rather that the current situation in which I find myself has made me shift my priorities. Remember, crawl, walk, run. Make small goals first. Make it through basic. Make it through AIT. Make a good first impression in your first unit. THEN worry about all of the high speed stuff. You need to see if you even like military life in the first place. [editline]4th October 2012[/editline]
Did anyone join having never been away from home out on your own? If so, how did you handle it and push on through?
That would be me. You just sort of accept your new way of life. Instead of always being homesick or fearful, just simply accept your duty station as your home. It works wonders. Once you think of a place as home, everything becomes better. Don't doubt and worry, just go with the flow. It works, trust me.
Well I guess I'll find out in a few years. I'm still going to push myself to be in the best physical and mental condition I can be in by that time though.
Thanks, SKEEA. That makes sense. I'm sitting in the game room of my college since my class is canceled. I am seriously not enjoying college right now.
despite all the complications, I'm finally dep'd into the Navy, I got the rate of Mineman which is exactly what I wanted, I leave August 5th next year
Nice, but why next year?
Nice, but why next year?
The military is currently really overbooked on recruiting, now more so than ever. When I DEP'd in to the Army, I had to wait eight months before going to BCT.

Why am I so bad using scoped weapons? My dad has zero'd in his scope and whenever he shoots he gets 5 inch groupins ( hes never been good at target practice but when it comes to hunting hes like a god ) and whenever I shoot it, my shots are all over the damned place. But when I use irons I shoot just fine, is there something I'm doing wrong? Using a colt M4/AR-15 by the way.

Steady position, aiming, breathing, trigger squeeze. Don't jerk the trigger, ease the trigger in one smooth motion. Make sure you aren't rushing the shot either. Control your breathing, shoot on the natural pause between breaths. Just slow down the whole process. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. You will hear that a lot, trust me.
It will mostly be yelled at you, which kind of ruins the whole "quiet concentration" thing.
They never yelled at us at ranges unless we were doing something unsafe. The last thing they want is a freaked out private with 30 rounds.
They never yelled at us at ranges unless we were doing something unsafe. The last thing they want is a freaked out private with 30 rounds.
That's not really what I meant, just that you'll be yelled at for normal instructions, day to day crap.
Never once had a drill sergeant yell "slow is smooth and smooth is fast". It defeats the purpose behind the statement.
Never once had a drill sergeant yell "slow is smooth and smooth is fast". It defeats the purpose behind the statement.
I think he meant how they raise their voices when they are talking to everyone at one time. Also thanks, I guess I'm just going too fast.

In fact, they mostly always lose their voice at one point or another. It can be pretty funny, but don't let them catch you laughing.
What kind of razors are you allowed to buy? Can you buy special razors or is it just the disposable cartridge kind?
